Alternative #1: Starbound first of all is a 2d game. It sort of has the same space travel but more linear, it has hundreds of planets to explore I am pretty sure they are just randomly generated and has a lot more content.
There is a game similar to Starbound but without the space travel and only has 1 world, called Terraria, it's a lot better than starbound.
Alternative #2: Space engineers. Space engineers is still in development but is in a pretty good spot currently to play. Its a survival game. This game is complicated and you have set world's and different scenarios. The "worlds" though can have multiple planets in them though and their moons. If you manage to figure out how to play it you can build your own ships and so on. It really tries to be realistic as possible when it comes to space survival.
Alternative #3: Star Citizen. This game is still in development as well. It's basically what no mans sky would have been but without the planets. You are in a world with other players and collect resources fight for them get better stuff so on. Other than that I don't know much about it. I know it takes quite a computer to run though.
Alternative #4: Elite dangerous. I don't know anything about this game. Only seen pictures.

Edited by Psychic Donuts: 8/30/2016 2:19:53 AMElite Dangerous is probably the best bet for people looking for a real space sim. Star Citizen will be but it isn't coming out until holiday of 2017 at least. Frontier's goal with Elite is to be what Star Citizen will be, I would argue even more than SC. It's making its way.
-
Star Citizen will have to scale planets which can be landed on though, as seen with alpha 3.0

Elite Dangerous is the game that people who are raging about No Man's Sky wanted the game to be..... ...but that Hello games never promised to make.

Star Citizen looks sweet.

Edited by Superpug: 8/30/2016 2:54:49 AMDon't forget about Pulsar: Lost Colony. It's its own little obsecure indie game, but it is way more fun than NMS.

I will vouch for star citizen, yes it's incomplete, and yes the only method of permanently owning ships as of right now is to acquire them in founder's packages. It's still the best space sim I've played in years, and trust me I've played them all.

Star citizen is getting there.

But how can you call 18.000,000,000,000,000,000 planets that are all the same "no content"??? And does thoses other two games have constant game crashes??? Didnt think so...

Elite dangerous and star citizen can be added to that, among several others.
