This leads me to believe that year 3 will be continuing the trend of leaving behind the previous gear and guns.
Bungie apparently understands your concerns (they are getting better at this) and have said the infusion system we have now will continue with Rise of Iron.
There'll be no changes to infusion. We introduced that with Taken King and I think it's something players have really loved. So anything from Taken King will be able to be infused up to the new Light level, and it'll work the same way.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-06-22-bungie-were-trying-to-build-destiny-content-quicker Bungie is also being more careful setting player expectations.
We're not really using the moniker 'Year Three,' and I think that's kind of intentional, because Year Two — the reason we went there was to sort of very clearly signal to players that we were going to make overhauls, right? Like, the Light system got overhauled. The way we told story in The Taken King got overhauled. The way we served quests and let people hunt for gear saw huge improvements, based on the player feedback from Year One.
http://www.polygon.com/features/2016/7/5/12079326/destiny-rise-of-iron-preview-interview

  • That whole, "we're not calling it year 3" thing is a load of crock and they need to explain what that means for the game. As far as infusion is concerned especially. If they don't call it year 3, but every new Rise of Iron weapon has a new insignia and can only be infused with Rise of Iron gear, they can call it year octopus but I'll know it's functionally year 3.

Underlying the statements about Year 3 is the fact that Destiny 2 was delayed. Activision wanted Destiny to be an annual franchise like Call of Duty, with a tic toc of a retail release and a major DLC. The next "Year" of Destiny is really Destiny 2. RoI isn't is just interstitial DLC, filler. In other words, it's going to be a looong year.

  • Where are you getting that they're "refusing" to call it Y3? The Y2 MoT deadline is Sept 20, the same day that RoI releases. If that's not indicative of their acknowledgement of the start of Y3, then I don't know what would be.

  • That's a smug response. Please don't imply that I'm uneducated because I didn't read some obscure article about a video game.

  •
That's a smug response.
Damn right that's a smug response. You started this when you typed:
Where are you getting that they're "refusing" to call it Y3?
You used quotes around "refusing". That deserved some serious smackdown. And then I smacked it down. So yes, I'm feeling pretty smug right now and it feels good. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

  • Bungie most definitely acknowledged it as year 3. Not sure why you think they havent.

  •
Bungie most definitely acknowledged it as year 3.
