How Can Destiny be an MMO-RPG?

Before I begin, I want to point out that I am NOT associated with Bungie at all. What I'm about to say is purely speculation and I have no evidence to support my claims. So, it's safe to say that we all need those spinfoil hats. Secondly, this is a 4:00 a.m. ramble, so you might need to read this a few times. In the Halo series, Master Chief was the main character. It was Him that was fighting the Covenant, but so many people played as Master Chief. Up to the millions of people were playing as Master Chief but in the story, ONLY Chief was the main (playable) character. How can this work in Destiny? Destiny is the story of us. It is the story of us becoming legend. But how can this work if there are so many of us? Thousands of people killed Oryx in King's Fall, but who is the true Kingslayer? It can't be the people that did it the day of the raid's release, then everyone afterwards would be useless. But how could we ALL slay Oryx simultaneously? How can we ALL be Kingslayers? *Clenches spinfoil hat* Unless, it is tied into Destiny itself. Think back to Vanilla Destiny, when Vault of Glass was a myth to most players. Just prior to The Dark Below, people said that Atheon could be beat over and over because Vex wanted Atheon back, so they went to an alternate reality where Atheon lived. This was proven true. Vex would hop to a time line where Atheon was still alive. Since time couldn't be rewritten, Atheon was bound to die in THAT time line as well. So, what if the Vex had a major role in Destiny the game itself? *Hangs on to spinfoil hat for dear life* Has anyone wondered why the Vex were the first endgame bosses? Why were they the first threat? I mean, it's obvious the Hive is the source of all Darkness, they should be the primary focus. Wrong! Has anyone thought that Bungie made Destiny around the Vex for a reason? A reason that includes multiple time lines. Destiny is an MMO-RPG because every guardian/every three guardians/every six guardians are living a different time line built by the Vex! *Spinfoil hat rips* Think about it, because of the Vault of Glass there are thousands of simulation universes for Atheon to live in, just in case he dies in one. At the same time, those simulation universes is a universe in which each individual one us IS the guardian(s) that becomes legend. So, when we are at the Tower, we are seeing guardians that are the Legend of their own time line. We can't touch them because they are in their own alternate reality. We can still see them because all of the realities are meshed together by the sheer force that is the Vault of Glass. Long story short, Bungie made the Vex and the Vault of Glass the first endgame boss to explain how several thousands of guardians could be The Legend simultaneously. I would really like to hear what you guys have to think. Keep fighting, Guardians My Library: https://www.bungie.net/en/Clan/Post/1371758/179573899/0/0

  • Personally, I like your theory. To me, it makes sense since you do tend to run through other players unless you're grouped up with other people. Excellent theory, sir.

      • I'm fine with that explanation. I do think MMO is a misnomer. More like Six Multiplayer Online, more often Three. There is nowhere that "massive" actually works. I like this game, but I do wish they'd inject a bit more of the RPG into this MMOFPSRPG.

            • Bungie's own words: "Destiny is a shared world shooter". It's not quite a full blown MMO. It lacks a few things that would make it an MMO.

                • I think everyone is just guilty of hopeful thinking, and Bungie doesn't have crazy secrets hidden throughout the game. Want examples? People were excited about calcified fragments being hidden everywhere and unlocking an awesome gun. It was just 45 reskinned ghosts randomly placed. Further proof? The Sleeper Simulant. People were going crazy thinking up theories and exploring, and it turned out to be a big waste of time. It was just a timegated quest. Remember when people found that basketball arena area in Kings Fall, and thought it was some secret easter egg, and people literally streamed for over 24hrs straight worrying about being the first to discover it? Yeah, it was just a small basketball area. Nothing more to it. There have been several things like this, and they always end up being overthought by the community and debunked later on. The only thing I can recall being a hidden secret was not letting the Templar teleport to unlock the extra chest. It seems they just don't care enough to make cool secrets for us to seek out. They either don't exist, or are simply timegated and underwhelming.

I don't really think you need to try to explain why there's multiple Guardians that are becoming "Legend" at once. Practically every MMO has its own storyline that's separate from the rest of the game.
Destiny isn't an MMO by the way.
• Destiny is an RPG because we play as a guardian and it is an MMO because it is a Massive multiplayer game that is online and persistent also the VOG speculation is bull shit. We are told that YOU play as "The guardian" "the Guardian" is known as the guardian who killed Atheon Crota Skolas and Oryx. The other guardians didnt do this in the lore because when you see another guardian, in terms of lore he is just a -blam!-ing scrub compared to you. And when another guardian sees you, you are just a scrub compared to him. "The Guardian" (Meaning You for You, and Me for me) Is the main character. You just shaped how the story is for you

                      One thing I found:
Despite having a decidedly MMO-like setup, Destiny isn't an MMO. If you don't buy an expansion for an MMO you usually aren't delivered any penalties other than not getting access to new content. The Taken King, on the other hand, doesn't just add new content--it literally strips original players of endgame access in an extremely coercive attempt to force the $40 expansion upon to these players.
https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/144251772?showBanned=0&path=0
A bit of info I'd like to share, not my claim, just something old I found that people have forgotten:
I want to clear something up that many consumers are confused about. Destiny is NOT a MMO. It was never stated by developers to be a MMO. matter of fact, the developers HAVE STATED that it is NOT A MMO. http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/927/view/forums/thread/378069/page/1 http://www.gamesradar.com/what-destiny-if-its-not-mmo/ http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm/loadFeature/7770/page/1 again note, the game was never said to be a MMO. The Media and Fans called it that, who never played the game. The people that made it, said its not. Who you going to believe? It has MMO Elements, as developers have said, but its not a MMO. Dot Hack, also has MMO elements, but not a MMO. Good example of clever marketing, (if you ever played that game and read the cover it states this)
I just remembered that bungie said this:
Caballero: Do you guys ever get tired of people calling it an MMO? Not at all. Do you guys ever get tired of us insisting it’s not an MMO? Debate about this game is always fun, and we welcome it. The ideas that are shaping Destiny come from a lot of different places. We’re drawing the best elements from experiences we love. Like an MMO, our game will compel you to explore. You’ll embody a character that evolves on that journey. Unlike an MMO, the entire experience is built around heart-pounding action that you’ll see through the eyes of your hero. Ultimately, we’re looking forward to knowing how you describe Destiny, once you’ve played it.

Do you guys ever get tired of us insisting it’s not an MMO?

us insisting it’s not an MMO?

not an MMO?
It has mmo elements, but that does not make it an mmo. Borderlands has mmo elements, but it is not an mmo. Diablo has mmo elements, but it is not an mmo. Dot Hack (if you have ever heard of that game), also has mmo elements, but it is not an mmo. Fun fact: mmo = massive multiplayer online Also, Planetside 2 is labeled as an mmo because it is massive multiplayer online. There is also this bit of info: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/bungies-destiny-a-shared-world-shooter/1100-6404047/ http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/599/PlanetSide-2.html
edit: Dislike it all you want, the truth is the truth and you can't change that.
