Old system: Gear had upgrade notes and you just needed materials to get it maxed out (which weren't easy to get at first, but like the legendary marks became plentiful if you're active). Exotics were always the top tier gear. Ghosts and class items didn't affect light, but there was only one ghost unless you got the pricier edition. Eventually could use Etheric Light to get older stuff to max level.
New system: All purple gear and exotics can be upgraded through infusion, so you may get terrible rolls/light but you luck out and get a higher light (which is easier now, thanks Bungie for somewhat listening), you can bring it up. More ghost shells, but they affect light. Class items rarely shade and affect light.
Personally, I prefered the old system. Gear was top tier at the start, and you would just try for better rolls to drop to get the gun/armor you wanted. Perks were (usually) good, and there weren't perks few people wanted until later on. Really, until the recent update, gear in year 2 for max level had the same scarcity as year 1, but a lot more luck based for the light level rolls.
