I've been playing FPS my whole life and I've always been above average at similar games like Halo and CoD, but I've been playing Destiny for 3 months now and I'm absolutely terrible at Crucible. Last night in Iron Banner was one of the most frustrating gaming experiences of my life. I couldn't win a 1 on 1 battle for anything and I consistently had the lowest score on my team. Please help me figure this out.

  • Personally I've never played a game and had such a bad time with lag and connection than I did with destinys crucible. I've never seen another game where so many people will trade kills in just a single match either. That's not how PvP is supposed to work. It's almost like the bullet strikes don't resister as quickly as they need to. I know it's not on my end because I can play any other game online and have zero connection issues. The only game I had a consistent redbar for every single match was this one. In everything from the division to Call of duty, I can play with no issues

  • Why is it when I'm red bar I get killed so easily and can't hardly shoot anyone. But when they are red bar they are invincible while running into a wall. It's ridiculous

    • It's all about head shots and what you're rolling out with gear and weapons. Make sure you cater to how you play.

    • Destiny is not harder than other fps games but different. In CoD you can shoot 3 times in the body and kill. In destiny you need to go for headshots. Though with the insane aim assist on almost every weapon thats pretty easy to do. When i first started destiny beta fresh off the CoD train, i admit i was pretty bad. Getting like 1.2 kdr games and sometimes going negative while actually trying. But then i found patrol. Sat there and broke my new controller in, practicing headshots on A.I for hours. Jumped back into pvp as a beast dropping my usual 2.0s and up. It just takes getting use to, and finding things youre comfortable with. But with the constant nerfs youll never find a weapon that will have consistent performance. I basically had to get good with everything.

    • It just takes a little time man. As much as we think this game is similar to halo, it isn't as similar as we think, if that makes sense. It just takes time to get a feel for the game. As long as you make an honest assessment of your abilities and learn the maps and utilize your experience in other fps games to make smart decisions, you will improve. In fact, it is impossible for you to not improve.

        • Well, Destiny is the most mobile shooter out there. It's very 3D (yeah all of them are 3D, but you know what I mean). People are in the air a lot and they strafe a whole bunch. The maps have multiple elevation changes, theres multiple routes to take, etc. It's also very fast paced, but doesn't have the ttk of CoD. In that sense it's closer to Halo. The guy that shoots first will not always win the gunfight. I've been plaing for a long time now and after the initial period of acquiring gun skill, or "how to hit the enemy, not the wall" I came to a big stop. (it did take me a while to learn aiming, this being my first console game and all) So I knew how to aim but would still go negative a lot. I also knew all the maps, but still didn't "know the maps". I'm far from True Vanguard or Mtashed, skill whise, but here's what I think separates an average player from the great ones: #1 - Map and radar mastery. You need to know where you are, where you're going and where your closes enemy is, at all times. The radar tells you a bit, but your knowledge of the map tells you everything else. But it also tells all of that to you enemy. This includes knowing the spawn points as well. Why is that important? Because if you know the map then you know where the enemy player that's on your radar is when you "see red" (let's say 95% of the time; some guys are very sneaky). But you also know where you can open and break line of sight with them. You know where to engage and how to run if you have to. Which leads us to... #2 - Good decision making This is so important that it outshines everything else. Not much use in being the best shot in the game if you always get double teamed. Being able to quickly judge the situation and know what you should do is what makes one Sir Dimetious such a great player. It's what makes all those streamers be able to carry and double carry. They know how to "outplay you". Bait you. Separate a team. Engage at their terms and win. But they also know when to book it (or simply, when to run and reposition). They know where and when to throw a nade. They know that jumping over a box is better than going around it, sometimes. (I'm looking at you Krafty) I myself have this "problem" where I do soo much better in Inferno than in regular crucible. I am a slave to red on the radar. Whenever I see there's somebody close I have to go engage them. And that accounts for a huge number of my unnesecery deaths. I also peak and double peek on snipers a lot more than I should, but I'm working on that (5 days so far, haven't been sniped once). Inferno takes away my radar so all I'm left with is my map knowledge and brain to make stuff happen. Because I flank a lot I still struggle with how to engage when people know I'm close. If you can master the skill of when and how to approach an enemy player or two of them without getting killed you will master this game. Decision making is my biggest problem and it's what I still work on every day. In addition to working on my map knowledge some more. (and not peeking or going through sniper lanes haha) What is helping me right now is using a fusion rifle, because that is the hardest gun to use in this game right now. It's also the strongest secondary in the game, if you learn how to use it properly. It makes you plan ahead and aim ahead and shoot ahead and basically makes you play the game 1-2 seconds ahead of what's going on in front of you. If you don't start charging before the other guy starts shooting you're dunzo. Same goes if you miss. If you miss and the other guy saw you, you're dead 99% of the time. Anyway that's it in short (yeah, right "short"). I hope it helped. I could go on but nobody's gonna read this anyway :) P.S. Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of you subclass is important too.

          • Destiny pvp takes some getting use to. Map knowledge, weapon knowledge, tactics and such really do make an impact on whether you do well or not. I used to be megative ( majorly negative, used by my family for generations lol), but once i started slowing down my pace and watching the better players in the lobby that I'm playing, i started bringing my k/d up and started not being bottom all the time.

          • 3 months means you are very inexperienced with the game. Dont be hard on yourself, lots of those dude have been playing since beta. Also 305 is pretty low in todays standards where most players have above 310 light.

          • I feel very similar to you as well. I have played a little crucible on and off but I'm definitely a pve player. This is only my second iron banner and I'm at 305-307 depending on which load out I choose. My kdr is 1.04 which isn't terrible but nothing to be proud of. I would say the biggest part of pvp is knowing the maps and how to maneuver from position to position. Know where the enemy is more prone to come from is the most important thing so you can anticipate that trigger pull and do damage before getting hit yourself. I'm getting better at this no doubt but do what I did. When playing control there is always that one control position that everyone fights for (usually B) and just shoot everything. You will learn patterns and how the enemy tries to overtake that position.

          • Destiny is just a bit different from other fps's if you've only been playing for 3 months then all I can say Is chose a play style and work on that, when you fell comfortable do the next thing...I'm not the best but I get decent clips sometimes, just keep at it my brother

          • I see so many people sitting back, trying not to get killed. I do well in crucible, my KD sucks but I'm usually in the top 3. Be aggressive when it warrants it. Some maps are built for it, the wide open maps are for stealth.

Pvp is custom built for snipers. Now, I hate them, but today I have a new found respect for the people that are good with them. Today I decided that I'd try to get used to them. Trials is pointless unless you're good, so I thought I'd give it a go. My GOD! Sitting down the corridor on dungeons and scope and I'm getting knocked all over the place. I'm thinking "who the Hell is shooting me, I can't see any red on my radar at all!". No one is shooting me. It's my own effing teammates. Is it really that hard to jump over or walk around people in pvp? I swear I'm giving up. Well done if you're good at sniping in this game guys.

          • Mate this iron banner like them all people with usual .8 kd rock stars posting regular 2.5 + and decent players getting .5 is just the worsening lag which i have come to think gets worse more groups / fireteams involved. Dont stress get rank 5 and just play the marginally better normal crucible. It is a lottery which game you get hit markers or empty clips and seem to not hit anything. Got a sidearm 314 from rank 5 so just got to sigh sometimes and get bounties done.

          • Looking back at your list, I can add: Playing for 3 months is not long at all. Practice a lot more if you want to get better. Connection/lag can make an enemy look like a lag switch cheater and all but impossible to defeat. Opinions here vary, but of the many, many games I've played (top 6% I think it was) I can say this is not a major problem.........at least for me. If you come across a blatant cheater use the in-game report feature, but be very certain it's a cheat because measures can be taken against your account for mis-reporting. I've found a few and reported them, but I have found it's uncommon. Look at some you tube video of these cheats so you'll know what to look for. Solo player. That's what I've done 98% of the time. It's trickier than going with a fire team where y'all communicate and maybe even have defined roles, but you can make a decent living running solo. Going as a mini fire team of even 2 or 3 with rest being match-made can still be an advantage. I play on ps3 with HDMI so I lose very little in terms of graphics vs. ps4. However, I have friends that I've known & have played for a long time on ps4 even before Destiny launch & they are very good. I'll be joining them soon. In Rift, for example, one guy is almost always the runner and he is excellent. They have a high win percentage. Light level 305 is fine, you're competitive there. Warlock is a great choice. I have one on my account that was seldom used by other players and I've just recently begun powering it up, mostly for farming purposes, but it is fun to cast stormcaller on folks and clean up an entire fire team. It's extremely difficult, if not close to impossible most of the time to get 4-5 super kills with Gold Gun, for example. Warlock is fantastic in some ways........but be careful pick n choose when you spend time in the air or you're a sitting duck.
