Damage Referee...Help

How does the damage referee work!? If I'm reading it right, those with green bars should do more damage to those with red bars? And red bars should do less damage to green bars, right? If that is right, is there anyway to check my connection rather than relying on the colour coded bar? (Speedtest etc report everything steady and good) It seems red bars do far more damage to me than I do to them, which leaves me questioning my own connection. Are there preferable system settings for connections?

  • I'd like to know when they are actually going to but the damage ref cuz I constantly get killed by people that are red bared yet when I'm red bared I can't even register a shot. For a company known for their pvp play you guys sure shit the bed on this game

  • Lol still nothing new on this referee? I guess a few paintings and vids are more important than the game the produce. I watch streamers and even they say the game is so broken... Can't wait till a new game is out much like this one but better. Till then rage on!! :-)

    • Just my guess, I have posted a question on this in another thread, but if another player has a red bar that means your connection to them is bad. Others may not see him as red, maybe yellow or light green (this has happened numerous times with my friends having different readings as myself), therefore you are getting the referee whistle smack and not them because others are connecting to them just fine or fine "enough". I really would like a solid answer on how this is supposed to work because in p2p enviro everyone has different connection strengths. What if host has bad connection like NAT 3 or high ping, does the low ping NAT 1 get punished for host bad internet connection?

      • Played a game today where 2 red bar players were dominating. It was near impossible to win a gunfight, when they strafe or moved it would be a glitchy movement that you just can't track. It seemed like their guns were doing plenty of damage too. Not sure if this damage referee is working that well.

      • Just test your connection, it could be Bungie servers are having a thought time and not yours, just don't rely on the bars, there not reliable

        • No. That's not quite right. The bar system simply tells you how well your sending and receiving information from the other players in game. It can read red if their connection is not configured properly, your or their host is not configured properly or your connection is not configured properly. The bar system does not tell you whether they have good internet or not. The damage referee works off of packet loss. If you suffer from packet loss you will see lag, red bar players and if enough packet loss you will get disconnected (usually with a baboon or weasel) The damage referee causes a player to not deal damage To avoid the damage referee, proper network configuration is key. Enable UPnP on your router Ensure you establish nat type 1. Some routers allow you to select nat type. It could be worded as "allow anonymous ip traffic" or something to that extent. If using a modem/router combo AND another router connected to that, make sure to put the modem in bridge mode to avoid double nat. Make sure once you properly configure your network to clear your console cache and perform a hard reset of your console to cache the new network settings. I have personally tested the damage referee and know these settings to correctly avoid it. Good luck and let me know if you need any assistance.

Basically poor connection won't be favored and if you have good connection you'll notice better gameplay less latency lag etc. Read about it here: https://www.bungie.net/en/News/Article/44410/
