Any got before an update are basically already set to what they will decode into
I keep six chest engrams for when the twilight garrison finally became available and they all became CoAL

Yeah I think you just had some bad luck. The last time they updated exotics into circulation a few months ago I got virtually ever exotic on that day weapons and armour. It's a hell of a feeling decrypting 40+ exotic engrams! ;)
