This story loophole bothers me quite a bit..
I'm the type of gamer who really enjoys the story and lore behind games, and there's something about Destiny's story that I've been pondering on quite a bit..
The entire point of Destiny, the entire point of Guardians, our purpose, is to save the Traveller. It's reiterated throughout the entire story. We must save the [b]dying[/b] Traveller, and prevent its death.
The very first mission of The Taken King greets us with a short scene depicted by our very own Ghost, telling us the tale of how he found us.
He starts with "I was born the moment the Traveller [b]died[/b]". So, before defeating Skolas and the House of Wolves, before defeating Crota, before defeating the Black Garden and putting a stop to the Vex, before meeting the Stranger and even before we are resurrected for the first time in the tutorial, the Traveller has already [b]died[/b]. Well before, supposedly, as our Ghost tells us about how long it took him to find us in the first place.
Just kind of bugs me. Before The Taken King, every single player knew that the purpose of Destiny was to save the Traveller before it dies. Then, we are now told that essentially all our efforts of preventing the Traveller's death were for nothing, because the Traveller died before we even began our journey.
It could just be a mistake on Bungie's behalf, a slight mistake by Nolan in the script, perhaps he was actually meant to say "I was born the moment the Traveller [b]began to die[/b]" instead. Who knows. Either way, it's quite a major loophole in the story, and despite all the complaints about Destiny's story, I liked it quite a bit, and this one statement whether it is correct or not kind of annoys me.
Did the Traveller really die before the tutorial even began? Might by some petty issue to other players, something I shouldn't get worked up about, but that first line of The Taken King still bugs me to this day. Especially when you go back to redo all the pre Taken King quests and it's still all about saving the Traveller before its death, even though, well.. [b]It's already dead[/b]..

The bait star is not dead, it has been crippled by rasputin so it cannot perform it's normal routine of leaving a planet after giving it light. It cannot leave the mast over our atmosphere attracting even the hive gods to eat it.

I always assumed dead was being used like a child being grounded by their mum. i.e.- "I wrecked my mum's car, I'm so dead when she gets home!" Which means it just needs a few babysitters until mum decides to let the Traveller hang out with friends again. Enter Guardians.

Death is kinda relative in Destiny, what with ghost resurrections, throne worlds, and the like. Don't fixate on the one word.

I think the term "die" is the thing thats bothering you, therefore i urge you to consider the fact that the Destiny universe is about dead guardians coming back to life to shoot aliens and being killed and resurrected by their ghosts repeatedly. I think anything "dead" in Destiny (like the PVE OOOOO SNAP) should be taken (get it) with a grain of salt (OOOO....wait thats nothing)

Same!!!!!! I thought I'd be the only one, so i never said anything. Plus I'm a Hunter. So my opinions don't matter. 1 - We killed the 'heart' of the Black Garden; then "light returns to the Traveler". 2 - Motes of Light reportedly help the Traveler, but dunno if this is true anymore. 3 - Don't remember when, but I remember its said 'trying to revive the Traveler'. ~ think it was Grimore somewhere ~ But I agree. It's all very confusing with no answers. We don't even know if the Traveler [b][i]can[/i][/b] be revived. It says it's dead or it died multiple times throughout everything. It's like we're fighting for the Golden Age to be back again. But then we'd all be with New Monarchy then!!! ¡Confusion!

I mean, trees die all the time and then just come the -blam!- back. I'm pretty sure the mystical ball the size of the Moon that brings back the dead can come back too

It's a video game, death can mean many things.

It is just poor wording, The traveler was crippled but is not dead. And when the traveler was crippled the ghost were created to find guardians that can yield its light.

There are many comments by npcs in the game and grimore entries that state the traveler is dead. There are other comments that state or hint that it can be revived. The only instance i can think of where you are actively defending the traveler is the last moon mission where you stop the wizards from draining it's light. That's not saying it's alive though

I think that loophole was just poor wording. As it fits the motif of the grimoire that the Traveller is in a dead state but not quite truly dead. More like a coma. But I do understand your point.

The entire story is a bad, jumbled mess. TTK was only marginally better (mostly because we actually received a very small amount of character development) but still poor by basic story standards.

I think the distinction is dead, as in not active. But not dead as in not-revivable. It's how I interpreted it, anyway.

12 RepliesTTK was supposed go be in vanilla destiny but the noobs from Bungie cut alot of content in pièces and sold it to us as " DLC'S " the original story is that rasputin is kidnapped and you have to retrieve him from the dreadnaught i know this sounds crazy but in the original story rasputin made an exo which he can control and you have to save him from oryx. Also later on in the game we would of find out that the traveler is actually an evil bastard who destroyed the proto hive and Thats why the hive dont like us humans because we protect the traveler
