This story loophole bothers me quite a bit..

I'm the type of gamer who really enjoys the story and lore behind games, and there's something about Destiny's story that I've been pondering on quite a bit.. The entire point of Destiny, the entire point of Guardians, our purpose, is to save the Traveller. It's reiterated throughout the entire story. We must save the dying Traveller, and prevent its death. The very first mission of The Taken King greets us with a short scene depicted by our very own Ghost, telling us the tale of how he found us. He starts with "I was born the moment the Traveller died". So, before defeating Skolas and the House of Wolves, before defeating Crota, before defeating the Black Garden and putting a stop to the Vex, before meeting the Stranger and even before we are resurrected for the first time in the tutorial, the Traveller has already died. Well before, supposedly, as our Ghost tells us about how long it took him to find us in the first place. Just kind of bugs me. Before The Taken King, every single player knew that the purpose of Destiny was to save the Traveller before it dies. Then, we are now told that essentially all our efforts of preventing the Traveller's death were for nothing, because the Traveller died before we even began our journey. It could just be a mistake on Bungie's behalf, a slight mistake by Nolan in the script, perhaps he was actually meant to say "I was born the moment the Traveller began to die" instead. Who knows. Either way, it's quite a major loophole in the story, and despite all the complaints about Destiny's story, I liked it quite a bit, and this one statement whether it is correct or not kind of annoys me. Did the Traveller really die before the tutorial even began? Might by some petty issue to other players, something I shouldn't get worked up about, but that first line of The Taken King still bugs me to this day. Especially when you go back to redo all the pre Taken King quests and it's still all about saving the Traveller before its death, even though, well.. It's already dead..

  • I think save the traveler is save it from the darkness not from death. It's the traveler's destruction or capture (can you use capture for an object?) by the forces of darkness that is to be prevented. That's how I viewed it. Some are waiting for the traveler to re awaken. Some say abandon it.

  • Questions about Destiny's story? Uhhhh......wellllllll.....here. Here's another PvP event. And uhhhhh....oh look! We're working real hard on matchmaking in the Crucible. Hey. How about that last update? Am I right? I mean, everybody loves Valentines Day, right? Ooohhhh. Look. Look over here. Red ghosts. Cool shaders. Blah blah blah. * waves hand through the air * These aren't the questions you're looking for.

  • Darkness defeated after a few years to learn our characters are the new power conduits for the traveler to become reactive, yay cliché

  • It's a machine, although it doesn't have the power to act on its own may equal dead in the eyes of the ghosts, it doesn't mean dead for good. A machine death would be the cease to function, possibly reparable, possibly recharging or repairing itself. I think the ghosts and guardians light is the indication that it's not dead just dormant, even if that ends up not being the case we already have time travel in the story line

  • Honestly, I don't pay too much attention to the story. It could definitely be better and told better, but I want knew maps, raids and gear.

  • Never really thought about like that, but now that you've pointed it out I'll be sure to point it out to my friends as well. The thing that always got me, though, was this; "Even Oryx cannot control an Ogre, unless it's taken" - Eris Morn. Sooooooo Oryx can control an Ogre after all??!? She literally contradicts herself in the same sentence and I can't see why they would read that script and think "yeah, that's acceptable!"

    • Wasn't that the floating ball thing we look at from the tower? Now that you mention it, i do remember the story mentioning it a few times. Completely forgot about that thing.
Really... Don't play destiny for the story, it's horrible. It bugs me that this was the only part of the story that bugged you.
• Well, given it's a giant machine, it's probably in a low power/hibernation state because some warmind decided to send a -blam!-ing nuke into the side of it

      • maybe we are the darkness and everyone else wants to kill the traveler because its evil but since we guard it they consider us evil, in turn making us think they are evil because we are told so with no backstory what so ever.

      • The traveller is just clinic dead. Don't worry. You can still save him. He has 3-4 hours.

        • Maybe the traveler did die a long time ago and we barely managed to bring it back, and now it is only barely alive. Perhaps our current goal is to finish repairing it so we can push back the darkness but when it is repaired it will only leave us like it did with so many before.

        • Of course it's dead. It's made of paper mache' All the candy from fest of the lost was in it. Then a bunch of guardians with swords bashed it open. It died about a month after it came. The sun burned it.

        • It just so happens that your (traveler) here is only MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there's usually only one thing you can do. Go through their pockets for loose change.

          • I haven't spent much time looking into lore until a while back i think what it means is the traveller is indeed dead but there are many things holding it back from coming back like a resurrection. When the black garden is destroyed only then will the traveller begin to heal maybe there is more to that then we think. Maybe the garden is never fully destroyed or there is more then the garden holding the traveller back from healing. When the hive stole that shard and was draining its light maybe there are things much like that across the moon or other planets that is stopping the traveller from returning from the dead.

          • They also claim that when the Heart in the Black Garden was destroyed, our dead Traveler will begin to heal. How do you heal something that is dead, necromancy?

            • So I'll make this really simple... I think the Traveller is "dead" in the sense that rechargeable batteries "die". So we as guardians are trying to protect the last city as well as the Traveller so that we can find a way to "recharge" it or bring it back to life. We're preventing its destruction or abduction more than its "death".

              • The Speaker tells us, "in its dying breath, the Traveller created the Ghosts." In fairness, I think you're being too literal about the meaning of death in a game where you're literally playing a resurrected corpse.

              • I hate to spoil Bungie's fun, but Imma go ahead and say that, as a Grimoire expert, You're kind of on to something there, the Traveler is more or less dead, but there is an incredibly subtle detail hidden in the description of a certain limited-time piece of gear that hints at why there is still hope. So don't despair and keep searching, Guardian.

                • The traveler is no better than the darkness. It just runs and hides behind a race and then gives them fancy stuff to slow down the darkness, and then runs. The same happened to the fallen and now they hate the traveler. The stupid ball just so happened to run out of breath and is taking a nap, so we took advantage of it and kicked the darkness back
