This story loophole bothers me quite a bit..

I'm the type of gamer who really enjoys the story and lore behind games, and there's something about Destiny's story that I've been pondering on quite a bit.. The entire point of Destiny, the entire point of Guardians, our purpose, is to save the Traveller. It's reiterated throughout the entire story. We must save the dying Traveller, and prevent its death. The very first mission of The Taken King greets us with a short scene depicted by our very own Ghost, telling us the tale of how he found us. He starts with "I was born the moment the Traveller died". So, before defeating Skolas and the House of Wolves, before defeating Crota, before defeating the Black Garden and putting a stop to the Vex, before meeting the Stranger and even before we are resurrected for the first time in the tutorial, the Traveller has already died. Well before, supposedly, as our Ghost tells us about how long it took him to find us in the first place. Just kind of bugs me. Before The Taken King, every single player knew that the purpose of Destiny was to save the Traveller before it dies. Then, we are now told that essentially all our efforts of preventing the Traveller's death were for nothing, because the Traveller died before we even began our journey. It could just be a mistake on Bungie's behalf, a slight mistake by Nolan in the script, perhaps he was actually meant to say "I was born the moment the Traveller began to die" instead. Who knows. Either way, it's quite a major loophole in the story, and despite all the complaints about Destiny's story, I liked it quite a bit, and this one statement whether it is correct or not kind of annoys me. Did the Traveller really die before the tutorial even began? Might by some petty issue to other players, something I shouldn't get worked up about, but that first line of The Taken King still bugs me to this day. Especially when you go back to redo all the pre Taken King quests and it's still all about saving the Traveller before its death, even though, well.. It's already dead..

  • During the collapse Rasputin crippled the traveler so it could not leave us to die like he left the other civilization before us. As the traveler who was hurt by Rasputin was going into sleep to recuperate his strength to survive the darkness he created a shield around him which could not be penetrated by the darkness there for leaving the last city untouchable. The traveler knew that he could no longer escape the darkness and that is why he created the ghost to hunt out soldiers to fend off the darkness and hopefully stop it. All of this is in grimoire cards.

  • The traveller died in a sense, but it also has the ability to heal itself. If the darkness reaches it in its current state, it will be permanently destroyed. But if we can protect it long enough, it will come back. This has been my understanding of it, mainly based off a vanilla story mission on the moon where you recover a shard of the traveller, and your ghost says now it can begin to heal.

  • Ah, I think it's relative. The ghosts were made with the Traveler's dying breath. So to the ghost, the Traveler died to make him. But to us, the Traveler is still alive and kicking, just in a different form: the ghosts and our existence as a guardian. The speaker theorizes that if we push back the darkness, the Traveler will waken again.

  • If you look at the Traveler now and compare it to how the Traveler looked in Year One, there was a giant crack on the right side and some larger ones on the left, if you look at it now, you'll notice that the big crack on the right is gone and the cracks are getting smaller, the Traveler is healing itself :3 or we are healing it <..>

      • Still dont know the travelers intentions. Or even the speaker. Why great prosperity, then collapse? Why have certain guardians been banished when they influence others to question the fight against The Darkness. Do you know about sword logic? Does the traveler? Whats inside? Ahamkara? Worms? Do you know about The Final Shape philosophy? Destiny is a fitting title when talking about the Lore

          • Except for you werent paying attention. Traveler was dead when game started. No where at all did anyone say we have to protect the Traveler from dying. Our job is to protect the last city and to push back the darkness.

            • All righty sit down and pay attention The traveler is dead. It died when it created the ghosts. This is not a loop hole. We as guardians fight the darkness to try and bring back life to the traveler. it brought to us a golden age we so desperately want back. however, when the darkness invaded earth and the surrounding planets the traveler used the last of its power to protect our "last city". now our goal is to fight to revive the traveler. it has light left to give us power however that light is fading and the first step to stopping that is to destroy the darkness. Bungie did a piss poor job of explaining that in game.

              • The story makes no sense because it was hacked to pieces and reassembled and glued together by an imbecile who does not care for story but fast money. A deadline had to be meet and DLC had to be cut from the content and assets that were already available. Therfore we got an inconsitent bs story that will never be as good as it could have been. And that's why I will not buy any more Destin, because Bungie regards us customers as bloody fools and idiots who don't need a convincing story but terribly stupid COD trailers with retarded old hardrock music and talk of "become legend". Do they think we buy that crap twice? Yes, they do.

              • The only reason they are making loopholes is because they said they want a 10 year plan to make a short story look longer just to make money for their game that has already died

              • I honestly believe Bungie are in such a predicament that they're making the story as they go along; I feel they have not much clue as to where they're actually going with it lately.

              • I think the whole "dying" thing was when Rasputin nuked the Traveller to stop it leaving us. We can see from the Mysteries: Vault of Glass Grimoire that there was once a Fallen world like ours, except with a difference. The Traveller was completely whole and one colour. On Earth, it is black and cracked...suggesting it's been attacked in some way. When the Traveller was nuked it created the Ghosts to ensure its survival. In that time it went into hibernation, with Light only returning once the Black Garden was destroyed.

              • Destiny's story is complete shit. Just play the game for PVP. Not worth investing any amount of effort into explaining destiny's weak ass, nonsensical crap story

                • The Guardians were created to protect humanity and push back the Darkness. The Ghosts are what allows us to do that(they revive us). They were created by the Traveller with it's 'dying breath'. Traveller was dead long before the game starts. That's not to say it any be revived, but it's been dead for centuries.

                  • The traveler brought upon a golden age to Earth that later was destroyed by the darkness (no one knows what this really is). Anyways so there only exists 4 "alien" races that fight for "the darkness" (seriously how childish Bungie). This is Cabal, Hive, Fallen, Vex. THEY ALL HATE EACH OTHER (no idea why) and they all fail to take out the travel which is just floating out in the open. The darkness is so strong to have crippled the traveler (not sure how, Wizards steal its power?). Also the traveler came a long way....did it stop anywhere else? What happened? Why do I want to save this thing?!?! I don't think Bungie knows hot to write a story, even Halo when you think about it kinda falls over its own feet. Just slap a gun and something to shoot, -blam!- WERE GENIUSES!! Bungie can work its way around gunplay mechanics for days but when it comes to storytelling it's like sitting in a room with special kids trying to explain economics. (Sorry if there are special kids reading this I'm sure your finances are fine.)

                    • You poor misguided soul. The Speaker talked about the Traveler's "dying breath" after the second mission. The Guardians' mission is to push back the Darkness and revive the Traveller. Of course, as any Guardian knows, the Guardians don't really do much of that. It's not like we can race sparrows, farm materials, and revive the Traveller at the same time

'Gods' can be resurrected after 'death'. Just ask the Oryx family.

                      • The traveller is dead in the sense that it used up its energy in its "dying breath" to create the ghosts, but that doesn't mean it can't be resurrected, after all every guardian was also once dead.

                        • I think it's in a coma. Alive and dead kind of both apply right now. It is in that lingering state where it has no active thoughts and parts of it are shutting down while the others fight to continue some level of function. Perhaps some parts of it are "dead" as machines go.

                        • I think save the traveler is save it from the darkness not from death. It's the traveler's destruction or capture (can you use capture for an object?) by the forces of darkness that is to be prevented. That's how I viewed it. Some are waiting for the traveler to re awaken. Some say abandon it.
