This story loophole bothers me quite a bit..

I'm the type of gamer who really enjoys the story and lore behind games, and there's something about Destiny's story that I've been pondering on quite a bit.. The entire point of Destiny, the entire point of Guardians, our purpose, is to save the Traveller. It's reiterated throughout the entire story. We must save the dying Traveller, and prevent its death. The very first mission of The Taken King greets us with a short scene depicted by our very own Ghost, telling us the tale of how he found us. He starts with "I was born the moment the Traveller died". So, before defeating Skolas and the House of Wolves, before defeating Crota, before defeating the Black Garden and putting a stop to the Vex, before meeting the Stranger and even before we are resurrected for the first time in the tutorial, the Traveller has already died. Well before, supposedly, as our Ghost tells us about how long it took him to find us in the first place. Just kind of bugs me. Before The Taken King, every single player knew that the purpose of Destiny was to save the Traveller before it dies. Then, we are now told that essentially all our efforts of preventing the Traveller's death were for nothing, because the Traveller died before we even began our journey. It could just be a mistake on Bungie's behalf, a slight mistake by Nolan in the script, perhaps he was actually meant to say "I was born the moment the Traveller began to die" instead. Who knows. Either way, it's quite a major loophole in the story, and despite all the complaints about Destiny's story, I liked it quite a bit, and this one statement whether it is correct or not kind of annoys me. Did the Traveller really die before the tutorial even began? Might by some petty issue to other players, something I shouldn't get worked up about, but that first line of The Taken King still bugs me to this day. Especially when you go back to redo all the pre Taken King quests and it's still all about saving the Traveller before its death, even though, well.. It's already dead..

  • The large sphere that we call the traveler is dead. However, the traveler lives. It lives in each and every ghost. Maybe one day when there is no need for magical galactic zombie warriors, the traveler can reunite with its body.

    • Letting go of their writer was the first huge mistake the studio made, the second was firing their composer. I knew then the studio had imploded at its core and lost direction completely. Will take a genius writer to make sense of the story at this point, the equivalent of rewriting a book finding random pages scattered by the wind.

      • It did die. Doesn't mean it can't revive. The black garden was blocking it from revival but we destroyed the heart and now it's healing. You're thinking too hard about this.

      • When you defeat the Black Garden, Ghost did say that the light was starting to return to the Traveler. Death can mean a long sleep I guess. When I was a kid my Dad said that we all died last night when we went on a long trip and reached our motel room. Meaning we all were passed out from being worn out. It's a figure of speech I suppose.

      • The point of destiny is to fight the darkness & save ourselves. Dead orbit actually wants to abandon the traveller & go to a solar system that the darkness hasn't touched yet, & a solid third of all guardians have pledged allegiance to them.

        • Don't hurt yourself trying to put together this broken story. Games nowadays don't need to have a story to sell :p

        • Guardians die all the time. And their ghost brings them back. Maybe... somewhere out among the vast cosmos... is a ghost on a quest... to find the traveler, just like our ghosts had to find us.

        • Ghosts are all that is left of the travelers influence. It could be called dead or dormant. It's semantic really. All that really matters is that it is inactive.

It's not actually dead more like dormant, if it was dead don't you think it would have collapsed on the earth ?

              • What kills me is that before your ghost found you the vanguards sounded like they were getting their butts kicked. But you come along and kill the heart of darkness, kick crota in the junk, defeat the house of wolves ( something the queen's entire army had trouble with) and now shut down an entire dreadnought and kill oryx. Now I understand that it is a game but next will be the cabal empire. I feel like the game is ramping up our acheivemnets to much. Especial when your not aware of a lvl 7 cursed thrall can kill you in one hit.

              • Maybe what the traveler was trying to teach us is that the power is in ourselves not because of it. Think of the fallen, they had the traveler at one point and revered it as a god, they believed all thier power came from this "great machine " and when it left, they felt like they had nothing. So maybe it's not dead, but trying to show us that we can create our own power. To realize we don't need such a machine to help us forward. Maybe the traveler gave us the golden age to show us what we could have if we believed in ourselves. And we relied on the traveler for so much that when it died we collapsed. And now it's just showing us that we didn't need it in the first place. Idk just a theory.

              • To say something is dead doesn't imply it's beyond saving. If a laptop runs out of power or a circuit breaks you could say it's dead, but it can be revived. Same with guardians, we can 'die' but we can be revived. I wouldn't read too much in to the dead thing

                • Death is far from a finale in the world of destiny. Oryx conceptualized and used death as a weapon. Our guardians don't even know the meaning of death anymore. At the end of the black garden mission we hear that light is returning to the traveller, so it may very well have died, but our actions have reversed this. Besides, the traveller was "killed" by someone who we work with plenty in this game, so if the traveller was our end game then we would have to kill Rasputin. We as guardians don't fight for the traveller, we fight for the survival of the species.

                  • During the collapse Rasputin crippled the traveler so it could not leave us to die like he left the other civilization before us. As the traveler who was hurt by Rasputin was going into sleep to recuperate his strength to survive the darkness he created a shield around him which could not be penetrated by the darkness there for leaving the last city untouchable. The traveler knew that he could no longer escape the darkness and that is why he created the ghost to hunt out soldiers to fend off the darkness and hopefully stop it. All of this is in grimoire cards.
