This story loophole bothers me quite a bit..

I'm the type of gamer who really enjoys the story and lore behind games, and there's something about Destiny's story that I've been pondering on quite a bit.. The entire point of Destiny, the entire point of Guardians, our purpose, is to save the Traveller. It's reiterated throughout the entire story. We must save the dying Traveller, and prevent its death. The very first mission of The Taken King greets us with a short scene depicted by our very own Ghost, telling us the tale of how he found us. He starts with "I was born the moment the Traveller died". So, before defeating Skolas and the House of Wolves, before defeating Crota, before defeating the Black Garden and putting a stop to the Vex, before meeting the Stranger and even before we are resurrected for the first time in the tutorial, the Traveller has already died. Well before, supposedly, as our Ghost tells us about how long it took him to find us in the first place. Just kind of bugs me. Before The Taken King, every single player knew that the purpose of Destiny was to save the Traveller before it dies. Then, we are now told that essentially all our efforts of preventing the Traveller's death were for nothing, because the Traveller died before we even began our journey. It could just be a mistake on Bungie's behalf, a slight mistake by Nolan in the script, perhaps he was actually meant to say "I was born the moment the Traveller began to die" instead. Who knows. Either way, it's quite a major loophole in the story, and despite all the complaints about Destiny's story, I liked it quite a bit, and this one statement whether it is correct or not kind of annoys me. Did the Traveller really die before the tutorial even began? Might by some petty issue to other players, something I shouldn't get worked up about, but that first line of The Taken King still bugs me to this day. Especially when you go back to redo all the pre Taken King quests and it's still all about saving the Traveller before its death, even though, well.. It's already dead..

  • Good point but remember vex tech? Skolas used it too.. Maybe we are supposed to come to an understanding of their tech to bring a live traveler from the past back or we go back before it dies to save it..... Did ya think of that one?? Lol. Jk I didn't think of it. I'm just trying to take a dump at work.

  • At the end of the vanilla story, ghost literally says that you've restored light to the traveler and it's no longer dead. So everything that happens after, including VoG, is with a living, albeit weak, traveler.

You're taking the dialogue too literally, rather than figuratively. The Traveller isn't dead, it's dormant. Our task is to wake it, break the hold of Dark so it can begin to heal. During the Speaker's first dialogue sequence he says: "In its dying breath the Traveller created the ghosts..." So from your perspective this "loophole" has been here since the beginning.

I think its dead as in "my phone's dead". It still works, just has no energy.

    • Misuse of the word died. In common speech died is used in place of sustained serious injury, being knocked unconscious, becoming dormant. Used figuratively not literally.

    • I think the ghosts are meant to be the embodiment of the traveler. Instead of the just outright dying, the traveler split into the ghosts. My 2 cents

The traveller is technically dead. Using the last of its light to create the ghosts? Edit: but its more like its on pause

    • That's not a loophole... It's a matter of perception of what dead means in regard to the traveller.

    • Maybe. Just maybe. And follow me here for a bit, maybe killing atheon (the time lord) skewed our timeline into an alternate in which the taken took over nearly ever facet of all the playable planets. Maybe it's reversible

The question you have to ask is, why did the traveler abandon the elskni(fallen) when they needed it the most And did it try to abandon us at the start of the collapse? Or did it cause the collapse to save itself. Only RASPUTIN knows for sure. "Your Traveler has a dark mirrior"-Infamous Agent Of The Nine

      • I think you're misinterpreting something - it's my understanding that the Traveler (there's only one "L" in the word, btw) went silent many years ago. And, by silent, I mean that it shows as having almost no activity - a sort of coma if you will. Given that the Traveler is not confirmed to be a truly living or organic being - it's seemingly referred to more as an intelligent machine. Being a machine (for the purposes of our example, let's think of a TV) it doesn't really live, but it can be referred to as dead. A TV that is no longer working (but still capable of working once repaired) can be referred to as broken or dead. So, since the Traveler doesn't appear to be "working" properly it can be referred to as broken (or dead). Side Note: Some of the NPCs in the Tower mention things like power spikes in their dialogue - but it's not made a major impact on the game world so it's more like a rare rumble from a dormant volcano or slightly changed brain activity in a comatose patient.

        • Miracle Max: Whoo-hoo-hoo, look who knows so much. It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there's usually only one thing you can do. Inigo Montoya: What's that? • I would like to k ow why there hasn't been a single mission or part of the story where someone tries to attack the tower or city. Something we can defend. Seems we're just pretty ok sitting underneath our half dead white bubble. Doesn't make sense to me.

It's not a mistake. Dying doesn't have to mean the descent into non-existence. If something dies, especially when we're speaking of digital devices, machinery, etc., it means the object has stopped running its systems, or has lost charge, or is not functioning. But let's say the Traveler truly has died in the sense that of its own accord, it will never again function or live. It has begun non-existence.... Well, in a hugely fantasy game like Destiny, do you not think it's possible that we could somehow resurrect the Traveler? Resurrection is a common enough theme in Destiny. Also, life beyond life is another common theme in Destiny. If you read the book of sorrows or know anything about Praedyth or other like mysterious characters in Destiny's lore, you know that Destiny stresses the existence of various planes of existence and that death is potentially not the last stop for any who dies, especially beings of higher power and understanding. Also, remember that the Traveler is simply an agent of the Sky/Light, and is not actually the Sky/Light itself. That means our efforts are not in vain. We have to come to a place of enough power and dominion over the Darkness that we are able to appeal to the Sky to resurrect its agent. But most likely the Sky will not do it if the same threat that was around when it first died remains, which is why we do what we do in Destiny.

              • That might not matter though. Let's consult the book of sorrows. According to it, Oryx and his sisters die numerous times. (that right there says death may not be all that permanent) And even when Oryx killed his sisters in the throne world, a true death, he brought them back by showing a true and absolute display of what they were when he first used the taken. (meaning it's possible, even if the traveler is dead, to bring it back to life)

Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society, I call this theory... Rasputin v Traveler I think there's more to the situation than simply dead/alive. I think, from the perspective of Ghost, the Traveler died. But I don't think we should take this to mean "died" in the way we understand it, as the Traveler is something different, and the Ghosts have shown an ability to revive the dead...

Didn't the speaker say "In it's last dying breath, the Traveller created the ghosts"? And I think you should see the Traveller dying the same as your phone dying. We know hardly anything about the traveller though.

                • Death is relative in destiny. You can be physically dead but not truly dead as long as you have light left. Just like sword logic dictates a member of the hive isn't dead till you kill it in its realm, light logic dictates something isn't dead until it no longer has any light.
