What the heck was that? :O
For those who haven't seen it. /spoilers, etc.
There appears to be Forerunner architecture beneath the SI's mainframe. I'm assuming this is also below the portal, seeing as you're a good distance below the ground, but why is it significant enough for Bungie to show us it in a Legendary ending? And what does Truth want with it?
I'm certainly not complaining, I'm just really curious about how this ties in with the overall story. Is there more to this section of the story than Bungie is letting on? I mean, there is a month between ODST and Halo 3.
I wanna know what else is down there D:
Update:
Apparently you can see it when you play through Data Hive, but it appears to be a painted back-drop rather than a playable area.

Hello all i was just wondering has anyone ever thought that the legendary ending takes place on the forerunner ship(dreadnought) the ship itself is 14km long and remember it was attached to a planet at one stage maybe the technical part you see is one of the 3 landing spires, the dreadnought lands on or the engine room or something? its not impossible, truth could of bought the AI on board, the scene could be a few days later when the ship has landed and he is going to activate the portal Or he is going underground to the portal to activate it send the ship of to do that
Posted by: The Monkey King F.Y.I. There isn't a Legendary ending for ODST. I beat it on Normal and got the same ending as I did on Legendary, all the way up to where Truth checks out the Ark Portal.
Fail On Normal Herioc there is the Johnsohn bit. On Legendary there is the part with truth.

I just saw this thing in the beginning of the last halo 3 level that looks similar to it. It's that big hole. I'm not sure if that's it or not.

Something that was said in this thread made a lot of sense to me. Chronologically, ODST came before Halo 3. Anyone that completes ODST before Halo 3 will get a brief "OMFGWTF" regarding the portal (even if they did see it in the normal ending, it's not totally obvious it's Forerunner until you see the architecture below), wherein it'll be fully explained to them in Halo 3. Part of me likes this concept. The other thinks "but...why? Millions upon millions of people have played Halo 3, surely there was something more interesting that you could've done instead? Maybe there is more to it. Or maybe the chronological-surprise is the point?" Either way, if you're playing this chronologically, you might question where all the Engineers are in Halo 3. Two really simple explanations come from both ODST itself and the game's endings. They're either all concentrated below the portal, tinkering with it and causing it to activate, or the Covenant deemed them all too untrustworthy to remain planet-side, in case they do something like what the Traitor did. So hey, I guess there can be clear explanations from this after all. [Edited on 10.11.2009 8:53 PM PDT]
Posted by: LordOfBlah51 Frankie said in a news article recently that the endings will eventually add together in the end. I think they're hinting another use for The Ark's Portal. Maybe it powered the Superintendent or something? The Audio Logs did say that the SI found some seismic anomalies (The Ark Portal), and that the Doctor (Sadie's Father) was looking into it at the time of the Covenant Attack.
Sounds to me like they're planning on suggesting that there's another place that the Earth-portal leads to. Perhaps the underground of it leads to a Shield World? Perhaps it's two-way as well, so we might be seeing the Chief finding his way back to Earth via that.

Earth was discovered by the forerunners, if you read up on the terminals. It could be, that the precursors made earth...
Posted by: Haughmill Bungie said Reach was their last game. Doesn't mean they can't release any ODST dlc or add-ons, or something in the next 2 years till we have reach.
ARRG! Liar! Reach is NOT Bungie's last game! Perhaps their last Halo game before they hand it over to (343 industries I think?) but by no means the last Bungie game.
-
Wow are you guys clueless? Don't you remember that animated comic made by Bungie where it showed ancient Africa and forerunner machines digging into the ground? Thats what that stuff is. If I had a link I'd post it, could someone get it?
-
This structure might be the answer to the question "How did Regret find Delta Halo?". I always assumed they found an artifact under Mombasa that pointed them there. That would mean that the hole was dug by the Covenant. Remember that SI only found the artifact right before the carrier's landing.
-
That was a nice spot... Truth's collar having a the "Y Glyph" on it. For what its worth, the Prima ODST Official Game Guide makes a reference to the glyphs as "Interesting Covenant Hieroglyphs." Thus, they may be Forerunner in origin or they may not.
Posted by: The Slayer Yo, check this mad evidence that Truth is the SI's bro.
You're suggessting that the SI and Truth have some sort of history together?
-
I'm just wondering, does any one know if the covenant use white lighting. It looks like there is a path leading down the cliff to the unearthed structure with white lights along it. Might suggest that ONI had in fact uncovered it first. Additionally, it is possible to see the structure using theater on the Data Hive level. There isn't much more visible than in the end cutscene, but at least you can zoom in and get a somewhat closer look at it.
-
Maybe it's our long lost cousins. Some type of shield installation like the one on Onyx?
-
It is probably related to the portal to the ark.
-
There are also PURPLE phantoms in the truth scene. Purple phantoms were in halo 2.
-
What??? Anyway back to the topic of this thread. Two theories on the LE of ODST: 1. The section of the Forerunner structure that you see is something similar to the Silent cartographer level in CE (The map room). 2. It's the lattice framework of a much bigger structure, i.e. a Shield World. In otherwords Earth could be a Shield World of sorts. Similar to the hollow Shield World in Halo Wars with a star at the centre.
