To progress past level 34 you will need to purchase TTK, but all of your characters and gear continue on with you into Year 2

Thanks Centurion, I'll put the question another way... I've only got House of Wolves for Destiny but need The Dark Below in order to play The Taken King, and as far as I know the only way to get TDB and TTK is through the Legendary Edition...which means installing a new copy of the game. If I installed a new copy of Destiny over my old copy, would I have to delete my progress and guardians or would it all transfer to the new copy of the game?.

your guardians are all saved on the Xbox/PS server side, so once you reinstall the game you should be able to pick up where you left off.

The answer is the same :) All of your character and gear data is stored on Bungie's servers, not locally, so deleting Destiny or installing TTK will not effect your progress.
