I think Datto (and by extension the "hardcore" community) is being terribly myopic. It's as a result of the circles they stomp in, they play destiny for an exorbitant amount of time, they have a reliable Fireteam and are pretty much burnt out on Destiny.
However, it is not the responsibility of destiny nor its developers to tailor make an encounter to cater to the absolutely minute percentage of the population they represent.
Now he's on Twitter whining about why should the hardcore community care about the casual community and not vice versa (i kid you not) and let the hardcore community have one thing. They do have a thing, it's called kings fall. I remember when the raid launched and for hours these streamers and youtubers failed to even stagger Oryx, the only reason why they're breezing through the content now is the gear they rock and the experience of running the raid over and over since then. Check the global statistics for the "long live the king" trophy for some perspective, I'll wait.
Destiny was never marketed as a hardcore game, that's not its primary audience. Challenge mode was never marketed as an insane spike in difficulty, as a matter of fact it was clearly stated as a specific way to do the encounter, if not, the encounter can be completed normally.
This foolishness of "destiny should kick my ass more because I've achieved the pve skill (loosely used) ceiling" has to end. You can follow the footsteps of Sean Gallagher and beat Crota by all manner of madness. Go play Bloodborne and when you find out you suck at it, run back to your crutch Fireteam and act like you're top dog. You're not fooling anyone.

I believe the challenge modes were the devs attempt to cater towards the hardcore players, which if this is true, they failed miserably. That's why Datto is really pissed. The only piece of content that might actually cater to him is a load of crap. Seriously, why did they even waste dev hours on something this stupid? Hardcore or not, you can't deny that the challenge mode is a load of crap.

Don't fool yourself, challenges were nothing more than an a easy/lazy way to add content to keep people playing longer.

I find myself in the middle of the casual and hard core players. And I do think hard mode should be harder. Remember vog... that was hard. All cheese excluded. Without pushing off the Templar and atheon. Without hiding up on the ledge to shoot the oracles. How many people would've actually beat vog. My guess is not many. I remember running through vog year one with all 34s and people still wanted to snipe from above. Players were still dying. Simply unable to complete the raid even 4 light levels higher!! My regular fireteam had to basically three man the oracles and the templar for them. So does anyone really wonder why bungie has softened this game a bit? Why should a company work hard to make a raid that is an actual challenge with team oriented mechanics when the majority of players, including all these streamers who act like they're the best in the world, just avoid the fight and enjoy some cheese... What percentage of the community has actually crossed the bridge in crota's end the right way... just to name another one. This game was a challenge at first. Then all the streamers started making "how to cheese" videos. So they only have themselves to blame. The beginning of the whole, make the game easier instead of helping the community get better. Started with avoiding the team mechanics.

They want cosmetic rewards only for doing things very few people have done.. Why? Is it to show people what they accomplished or is it to show people that they are better than everyone else and should be treated as such? I would hope that narcissism isn't the obvious choice but.. Special snowflakes being what they are... If I played destiny for 6-8 hours a day with people who had the same schedule I'm sure I could beat the raid blindfolded </sarc>. I wouldn't see challenges as challenges and I'd be bashing this in the same way they are. Bungie wants everyone to play their games. That's their strategy. For some (like me and my group) the challenge on hard is REALLY hard. I enjoyed it, too.. Even though the first run took 3 hours to do.

I think the Demon/Dark Souls & Bloodborne PVP is the only pvp I dislike more than Destinys. Probably due to the extreme lag and a very, VERY terrible first experience when I was invaded in Demons Souls at that boss where a player is summoned in to play as the boss and he kept running away & healing the entire fight. Seriously turned me off to that games PVP ever since. I think the most "fun" I've had in Dark Souls PVP was when I was looking around the Rat kings area and after getting fed up with being teleported to peoples rooms I would watch TV until the Ratbro eventually got bored and came down to where they spawned you to kill me.

Yea the first dark souls was when I decided to play the game offline to not get my anus ravaged by people much better than me that enjoy making the game hard for others to enjoy

The "casuals" he derides are the people who actually pay Destiny's bills and as such are the reason this little hothouse flower can do what he does and make money at it. "Datto" should spend a year or so at a minimum wage job scrubbing public toilets. That'd give him a whole new perspective on things, a perspective he sorely needs.

Great post. And, to add to that, even if Bungie made the entire raid ten times harder for the challenge mode it would only be a matter of time before the hardcore players turn it into an easy routine. And then they would be complaining again.
