Dragons Age Inquisition?

I am new to DA universe full stop and have just picked up DA: Inquisition, does anyone have any helpful hints? I have played Kotor 1 & 2 and some of Mass Effect, is it more of the same? or is there anything else a new to the DA universe gamer should know? Thanks in advance for any constructive advice. Edit: Thank you I have had some great advice so far from many users so far.

  • All choices carry over game to game. You can go to the official website, create an account, and set up your choices just as if you played the first two games. I do think you should play the first two. They are great games. I had a child with an apostate Mage in dragon age 1. In part three my son is 10 years old. My new character gets to converse with my first characters old love and learn about the kid. Play the first two games. Then jump to the third. Because of the platform generation change you will still need to visit the website and input your choices. Worth every second though.

DA:I throws you into a much bigger world than the previous games, which is good and bad. It's got the standard bunch of open world laundry list quests, but you can focus on the main story and still do fine if you don't feel like wandering. The hinterlands can be a little rough, as you do spend a lot of time there in the beginning of the game, but for most of that time, you're still in the prologue. Once you've gone through some important story missions, the game will open up a lot more. The downside for me is that I was never a fan of the Orleasian stuff and the main plot spends a lot of time in Orlais. It really is a bit like Mass Effect in a fantasy setting, though they did put a much bigger emphasis on tactics I think. The one mechanic that threw me at first was the uh... "Armor" buff you apply to warrior type characters when you enter a fight. As there is no healing magic, you will need to focus any tank builds for damage mitigation rather than relying on a large HP pool. I played the game as a rogue. I played the first game as a dual wield warrior, but they took that option away in the latter games, so a rogue it was for me. Mages are quite powerful and the heavy armor melee archetypes hold up quite well too. If you plan on playing it completely in real time and don't want to micromanage your party members, I'd suggest lowering the difficultly a little. If you are a lore junky, there is a lot to read and some of the zones you go to are completely unrelated to the main story but do have massive significance to the world's overall plot. Don't be afraid to explore, as you can always run away. As I did when my level 14 self came nose-to-nose with a level 23 dragon. There was much "nope" to be had. I honestly haven't played in a while, but I have the official guide if you have any specific questions. Edit: I haven't played any of the DLC yet and the guide doesn't cover that. Edit 2: there's a website (official) called Dragon Age Keep, it gives you a rehash of the story so far and let's you pick what choices you made in the original games. It's not necessary, but it's is kinda cool. I don't remember if you can apply it to a game in progress or not.

  • It's fundamentally still a child of the Bioware formula. If you played stuff like KOTOR you won't have a problem with this.

  • Its like mass effect though its more political then "save the world" in terms of the premise of its story. Plenty of side missions with their own unique story and tough decisions to make as well. Its a good rpg, you'll probably enjoy it. You dont need to have played the other games to get the story or characters.

    • Going to be honest without playing the others and not knowing the lore of the universe might hinder your enjoyment. You might find yourself confused.. It's not nice to people who don't know stuff about fade or old gods ect. I hope I'm wrong though. Not really advice but I'd picked up the latest dlc for it. it pretty much extend the main storyline and gets you excited for the next one and overall better ending. Have fun man

        • Mage knight enchanter is basically easy mode ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) But it's a good game, if you plan on grabbing any elf, definitely get trespasser, sets up the next game very well

            • Play the other dragon age games then comeback, it's hard to understand the story so far if you haven't played the previous games.

Use the Keep to see the whole story so you aren't lost. You can also edit some choices in previous games that can "change" an outcome in DA:I. Be sure not to run into high level area because you're not getting past it. There are 10 Dragons, at least one in each area. They are fun boss fight and drop great loot. Make sure to have a Warrior and a Mage on the group, it is very helpful to have those two. Do as many quest as you can because main story isn't going to be enough to level up.

                  • MAKE SURE YOU PLAN FOR THE QUEST WICKED HEARTS AND WICKED MINDS. That is my best advice. It is a great game btw. I preferred it to witcher.

                    • I play as a rogue assassin on nightmare difficulty. At first it's a challange, but once you learn the moves and level up its a joke. Amazing game, but I'm not even halfway through the story and I've completed nearly all side quests, closed all rifts in available areas and I've killed all dragons. It's extremely fun and addicting, but got easy for me lol. If you want an easy class go with a mage and become knight enchanter when you can. There's a moveset that allows you to spam the same move over and over, get shield back constantly and you never have to worry about losing hp. I have yet to try a melee build, but those are two fun choices IMO.

Ok, the game really picks up after the first chapter (download the free black emporium dlc/some of the best equipment in the game to purchase there AND change your character's appearance/voice as much as you like). Nothing deserving of a direct advice. Explore, explore and then explore some more lol for camps, influence/power and possible NPC's to recruit. Enjoy creating your own builds (can provide great guides if you wish). Always check the war map, keep sending agents out on missions (can unlock equipment and even secret locations). Always check on your companions. And yeah DRAGONS .... Best gear/part of the game. I can tell you the place of a GREAT vendor that you can reach later in the game, but i don't wanna spoil anything (finding it could be fun/cough cough Hissing waste). Specific Mage/rogue specializations/builds are ridiculously OP and fun to play (hard diff all the way). Warrior can be a monster too for different roles. And last but not least, enjoy the ride. Its a great game.

                                    • An archer is one way to kinda cheat at beating dragons and tougher bosses. You can keep far away and when your heroes go down you can run a little farther away from the enemy and your heroes will come back to life. I would strongly recommend that you have a Mage with resurrection capabilities. Once you get your castle fortress, the game really expands with castle customization and just general stuff you can do

                                      • Would recommend playing Origins first buys it cool yo. Tips: Get out of the Hinterlands as fast as possible. Never buy weapons. You can always craft better ones. Just go for the schematics. If you do the war table missions, actually take the time to read through them as sending different advisors can have positive/negative effects. Download the free black emporium dlc. It has a way you can change how your character looks and has some decent potions (expensive).
