Why care about light level?

Why do people care about light when doing Raids/Trials etc.. All I see is "301+ light to join". Why? If you have a high enough level (35+) with some exotics and good weaponry; why should your light count as you being a good player? I get that "the more light you have, the better the armor" but why should your light level prevent you from teaming up with people? P.S: Just curious as to why this is a factor when playing. I just returned after almost a year of inactivity. So post seriously please? No flame. READ BEFORE COMMENTING: Since some people have something stupid to say about me being new or being a "noob" or shelfing this game;no. I deployed and have been gone for almost a year. Now that I am stateside, I want to catch up. U.S Army 31B 11th Battalion Military Police EDIT: Thanks for the responses guys. I found out what I needed to know and then some. I thank everyone that took their time to reply with an answer that wasn't negative. Good day guardians!

  • I don't. Just gotta be 300 or above really. Bungie released a graph awhile ago showing that it took like a 20 light level difference to notice the tiniest difference. This was for pvp..probably still out there archived somewhere..
