Why is the Destiny community so toxic? A question from a new player.

I would like to preface this with the fact that I've been gaming for a long time and I've been heavily involved with various communities over the years. I have been a fan of Bungie for as long as I can remember. I ran a community called Arm The Flag during the Halo days and we got our Machinima work on the front page all the time. I was even interviewed by the community director, Urk at the time. I've seen issues left and right within games, their creators, and the communities around them and I know there is a mature/respectful way to handle them. I am late to the Destiny game as I just recently finally purchased an Xbox One and I was eager to jump into the Destiny community because I remember all of the fun I had back in the Halo days....well that feeling was soon squashed for me. Upon checking out the Bungie Forums and jumping on r/DestinyTheGame on Reddit for the first time a few days ago I was met with all of of this hatred and resentment towards Bungie for just about every little aspect of the game. Where was this beloved community that I remembered from back in the day? It was nowhere to be seen. Now I've seen the posts and arguments...I realize that veteran players feel shafted for the Y1 stuff taken away then brought back...that's some BS. I see the arguments against the RAF program...which I think is an excellent program and the people complaining about it come off as nitpicking self entitled children, but that's just my opinion. Regardless of your opinion instead of dumping toxic waste posts everywhere in the community about how Destiny is shit and you hate Bungie, and you think it should be this way....maybe you should look at a more constructive way. Where is the mature community that enjoys the game? Where is the mature community that instead of whining like little girls they start a meaningful discussion and possibly come up with something to present Bungie that voices the thoughts of the community as a whole? Turning this sub and the Bungie forums into a cesspool of negativity, complaints, and a whine fest will not help your cause. I love you guys...and I've loved my time playing Destiny so far, but I hate reading through all these crap threads day after day.

  • I hate to be honest but a lot of us were those mature gamers that start meaningful discussions. But after a whole year of giving feedback with next to no response from Bungie, we're just sick and tired. I can't say I complain a lot but I'm past the point of positive feedback. It's simply not worth it taking time when your efforts go unnoticed.

    • Everyone thinks they're better than everyone. Everyone has mixed opinions on everything and the annoying one is if you're a hunter or main one you're instantly put into this group of whining bitch even though. We're the exact opposite just because some of us complaint doesn't mean you have too 3rd world discriminate the rest of us.

    • Halo community: existed in the days where in order to communicate online one had to sit down at a PC, with a keyboard, and engage in the dark art of forums in a time where threads had a flow and conversation was possible. Destiny community: most players link into the community via a smartphone or tablet. They are used to writing short posts anonymously, are immersed in 1000 memes a day, have no sense of self censorship after growing up on Facebook and snapchat, and latch onto youtubers, streamers, and loud voices as the word of god. It's a sign of the times. It's no longer only the super dedicated fans who venture online seeking each other out as every player has the app in their pocket at all times.

    • Most of the mature people have long since either moved on, having given up on Destiny, or stopped talking on the forums, having long given up on the community. I've personally tried to remain respectful and mature on the forum, but, with every move from Bungie I become more and more jaded and cynical. When they announced the RAF mechanic, I did feel cheated. Because Bungie removed our variety when the game moved into year two. When HoW was released, there was so much variety, but it was ruined by poor balancing. Bungie, for some reason, decided to "balance" things, but also remove the variety they had added, and then some. Every step in the right direction Bungie has made has been tied with two steps in the wrong direction. As a day one player, I feel I can no longer play pvp for fear of being banned for latency, due in part to poor net coding in the game itself. After everything from year one was more or less made pointless, I feel no drive to reach a high light level. I have no desire to chase the raid weapons. The nightfalls are no longer fun, nor are they rewarding. If we want exotics we simply grind strikes with 3 of coins. I am whining at this point. I'm well aware of it. And that's why I don't really post on the forum too much now. There's simply nothing good to say. So why say anything?

    • Didn't read it but, this isn't the community. This is forums this is barely 1/5 of a percent of players. If you think this is all that plays destiny you are a fool. This is how forums are. Go look at other places that have them. They are all like this.

    • A good bunch of people 'left' the game, as they didnt like it. Instead of actually leaving the game, they began to bash people who do play it, and in turn bash the game. This caused some people think negetively about the game, basically peer pressure, so they gave bad reviews because the game didnt talor to their wants. Instead of basing the reviews on what the game is, they based it on what it wasnt AND their own opinion on what they thought it was supposed to be (although the game did not suit their preferences). These people left, yet continue to mock and insult Bungie/the playerbase on B.net. They continue to bash Destiny, as thats the cool new thing to do. They bash a successful new IP because they dont want it to succeed. The game is dead to many, yet I am willing to bet that millions still play on a regular basis, if not hundreds of thousands. Some people will say that I have missed the mark. Others would say that I am spot on.

    • It's hard to be nice when you are constantly lied to. It's like saying you would still love your wife after she cheated on you 50 times. My money was sucked from me and I was given a lazy game. You know why people didn't complain back in the Halo days? Because that game was actually good. Destiny is that one game you still play but hate. As for RAF, it's all the veterans who hate the idea, like myself. Refer friends that I referred back in the TDB and HoW days. Or hey, I now wouldn't want to refer a friend to this game, save them from grinding and getting addicted.

"Constructive" ........ Alright i'l try to say this as calmly as possible since some people don't understand the dynamic of relationships/interactions between companies and their customers, especially one that INSISTS on -blam!-ing up left and right. First of all, the anti-consumer practices + shady behavior they displayed over the past year isn't even a matter of opinion/discussion. You either acknowledge them, ignore them or are oblivious. It also isn't something you can respond too with "constructive" criticism nor should you. Second, they started with a bizarre system to say the least, kept replacing it with more bizarre ones that canceled previous progression and expected their player-base to "pay" along ...... I don't know about you, but i'm definitely in this to contribute/fund Bungie's learning project of how to make a scam .... I mean a game. And finally, just remember that Bungie is nothing, but a company (being a fan and blindly treating them as FRIENDS are two different things). One great franchise from the past of a different genre means absolutely nothing/does NOT justify any of their recent shady practices/amateurish game design (no free passes). Not gonna go into details/reasons/how they treated their employees and how all that played a part in this cluster-blam!-. As you said, you are new and you're witnessing the results of how a company maintained a special caliber of stupid for an entire year. For that i applaud them ..... Its a gift. Btw you don't "have" to read anything that upsets you, you simply wanna get back to pretend like nothing is happening in a bubble of positivity. A cluster-blam!- is a cluster-blam!-, there's no way to make it "positive" again nor should you. "Cause" he said ...... At this point, people either don't care or wanna watch it burn, how's that for a cause ???

    • The thing is, there are alot of people such as myself that love Destiny, but feel an unbridled rage at the lack of motivation and effort to bring this game to its potential. So we bitch about it. But we love the game. That being said, I'm not one of those people that calls for nerfs and complains that everything isn't handed to me on a platter. Alot of those are children with little to no parental supervision.

    • It all started with bungivision hyping destiny making it this awe inspiring game to trump halo in every way except it was all about you becoming legend. You would be able to travel to any point of a map, climb the mountain of the hell mouth if you want. Engage in a dynamic story, with friends that could drop in at any time with a swoop of their ship. They advertised so many fantastic things like amazing public events where so many people would be present, for a time that was the case. That wasn't the game we got, we gritted our teeth with sour disappointment, but we played anyways. We played the game only to beat it and not understand why anything we did was important. The game made references to lore we didn't understand and had to look up the grimoire cards to get the full story. I was on the original Xbox for halo 1-2 I was on the 360 for 3-4 (and halo halo games between) For those of us that know the kind of game that bungie is capable of creating and the story they are capable of telling we were all bitterly disappointed. Bungie made this community sour.(except for pvpers they have their own problems) There are many many many more problems but this was the primary purpose as to why people I know and myself are upset with the game and why the community isn't like the old halo community

    • It's not that Destiny community is so toxic, it's that online interactions are. People are disconnected from the fact that it is another human being on the other side of the computer. It could be someone that you may call friend, if you ever met them, or someone that you share life experiences with... Online interactions make most people, jerks.

    • come back in a year, after investing 500+ hours.. I like how you ended it with "Where is the mature community that instead of whining like little girls they start a meaningful discussion and possibly come up with something to present Bungie that voices the thoughts of the community as a whole?" Well we done that.. But bungie don't listen, or if they do.. the conversation is like talking to a brick wall. So hundreds of other posts are brought up on the same subject (you refer to whining).. but its more like, trying to get bungie to notice.

      • Let me give you a little advice. If you're looking for constructive posts and otherwise helpful info on Destiny head on over to reddit It's where reasonable folk hang out. These forums are a place to keep the filth so Reddit can stay clean.

      • What happened to the old community? Well if you haven't noticed Bungie no longer makes Halo, so there's that. Plus, I believe the old community left along with the old Bungie, they obviously aren't the same open developers anymore and that's partly their own fault as they seem to be clueless about the direction of their own game. Yeah. You are right, the RAF programme is a good idea, except it's been implemented at a bad time where 90% of the community have already referred their friends and as a result they will get nothing, also all the people that have been Sherpas over the past year, taking people through night falls, Raids and even Trials won't even get a reward, how is that fair? Those people ARE by Bungies definition entitled to something. But no, they want to give it to the guys that can earn them extra sales, is that like the old Bungie? Doesn't seem it to me. Oh, and there's the small debacle where Bungie banned all user account on Bungie.net if they haven't played Destiny with that account, which actually stopped long time members from using the forums, that's just a shit tactic to get inflated numbers on the game. The forums themselves are toxic because Bungie allows it, because instead of having a more strict moderation team they just let people say whatever they want. They allow people to create a toxic breeding ground in each of the forum sections to the point members are openly destroying Bungie. I shouldn't have to mute everyone all the time when Bungie should be IP banning offenders.

      • Too many people see toxic posts as a way to get attention. It has reached the stage that people complain because it is the "in" thing to do because so many other people are complaining It doesn't help that Bungie keep reading-inventing the game mechanics and levelling and haven't got it right yet
