Freedom of religion means you’re allowed to practice whatever religion (or lack of religion) you choose without fear of legal persecution. It does not mean you can discriminate against people based on what your religion claims is right or wrong, it does not mean you can prevent people from obtaining things they are legally entitled to (like marriage licenses) because of what your religion claims is right or wrong, it does not mean you can refuse to do your government job that you signed up for because it violates your religious beliefs, it does not mean your religion overrules or protects you from the law.
Furthermore, religion has no place in politics. Every president we’ve ever had has been Christian, the majority of Congress and state government are Christian, and they get away with publicly spewing their faith because America is dominated by Christians, but America is not a Christian nation. As far as I’m concerned a candidate for public office should be disqualified the moment they say something along the lines of “I’m doing this because god told me to.” Politicians are entitled to practice a religion just like everyone else, but their religion has no place in politics and has no place influencing public policy.
