Test patch 1.09 for compat fixes

Hi all, Last night I decided to sit down and fix the problem where 64-bit machines with >4GB of RAM complained that you have 0 RAM. That was easy. Then when I tried to test the fix, I discovered the compat problem with the recent IE security fixes, and saw the threads here suggesting that people uninstall them. That's no good, right? So I put together a fix for that, too. I'd like you guys to try it out on your various systems and make sure that (a) it fixes those problems, if you had them , and (b) doesn't cause any new ones. NOTE!!!!!! This will *not* have any impact on gameplay. All the changes are finished happening before the MGS logo movie even plays! Every time there's a patch, there are always a few people whose internet connections happen to get flaky that day, and they assume there's a correlation. This patch won't change the game. It's your imagination. Really. This patch is only for HaloPC, not for CE yet. If a little time passes and no one can convince me that the patch is buggy, I'll port the changes over to CE and release both. This version will network with 1.08 in the same game, it doesn't break compat. Try it out, reinstall your missing IE patches, and post your results here. If anyone is still running Win98SE (gasp!) let me know if it works as well as previous versions. Thanks! 1.09 Beta patch

 • nvidia cards don't have a real problem with active camo. ATI cards do, and this is just how the card reads the shader file. I don't know that there is anyway to fix this.

 •
Urgh, Halo CE. Amateur maps and graphical glitches galore. Still not sure how they managed to break even more graphical features with CE than they did with PC. ;)
Apparently you've never tried CE, since the graphics are the same as in Halo PC with the exception of custom maps. If there's a graphical issue in a custom map it's because there's something wrong with the map, not the game. As for amateur maps, I don't even know what to say except that you must have been living under a rock since CE was released... There are plenty of maps that are just as good or better than the multiplayer maps that shipped with the game. Add to that the slightly improved netcode Halo CE uses and you've got a game that's better than Halo PC in every way. Speaking of the netcode, and the fact that there was a working netcode in the beta that almost eliminated the need to lead like mad, I'm another one that would like to request that said netcode be including in a future update... Not necessarily this one, but possibly a "1.1" update in the future.

 • - Nope, I can't disable versions of the game. - The PC MOTD has suggested that people check out Halo CE for several years already :-)

Xero - Yeah, I'll change the MOTD, I've just been forgetting to for a year :-) I can't change it to a community one; MS wouldn't want to let strangers insert messages into their game (mostly for legal reasons) Pepsi -SOrry, no new features or major fixes. Only occasional fixes for crashing bugs. Btcc22 - Haven't heard of that one, sorry.
If my understanding is right then, that means the Halo PC MOTD could ''Suggest'' users to check out for Halo CE am I wrong? :)

 • Anyone was basic knowledge about demo mem offsets versus full mem offsets you could make one.

 • Ah, but for things like this you don't even have to do value searching and narrowing. Most of Halo's memory is mapped and documented thanks to the works of people like SilentK. So, the offsets to the floats of the Player's view and Player array are well known. There's really no way of getting away from botters. Unless you play Halo Demo... *wink* EDIT: I'm talking about aimbots, if I threw anyone off. [Edited on 08.22.2009 11:10 PM PDT]

 • Sawnose, at this point I have to take the stand and represent the mac halo community and ask if these patches will reach halo for mac sometime soon to eliminate these server crashing bugs for us as well?

BTW thanks for working on this on the weekend sawnose! [Edited on 08.22.2009 1:52 PM PDT]

 • As icing on the cake, would it be possible for you to update the Halo PC and CE Game Lobby Message of the Day? It hasn't been updated since the 1.07 patch was released. It can't be that hard to do since the game just checks the following URL and displays what's written: http://www.bungie.net/halopc-motd.txt You can even change this URL yourself manually by editing the "Strings.dll" file, there was some discussion awhile ago about getting a patch out there that would redirect that MotD to a community controlled MotD. That would be amazing. Back when I was running a clan I released a "patched" Strings.dll that I had showing clan-specific news right in the game lobby, it was GREAT for organizing scrims and such. For example: http://www.lancersedge.com/pics/haloce-le-motd.jpg And a HD YouTube video showing the MotD scrolling (source wasn't HD, my bad): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Rf4grutd6Y&fmt=22 [Edited on 08.22.2009 1:12 PM PDT]

 •
Dear Mr. Sawnose, While we at OpenCarnage (formerly ModHalo) do appreciate the efforts you are trying to place to help us enjoy a game we have for many years I must say the work that you have passed along to Dirk isn't close to some of the fixes we so desperately need. We need fixes in better net code for online gaming, more insight into the workings behind our game and any questions that may arise during your visit to our forums. Im sure we could set you up your own section here for us serious modders and players of the original HaloPC that would just like to have some questions answered as well as some problems addressed. Alot of us have spent years in this game competing, modding, glitching, pubbing and just enjoying time with friends. The core of the HaloPC modding community have moved to these pages now and feel this would be a excellent place to interject some banter back and forth on possible upgrades and fixes that could keep this game alive proving the Halo franchise does have longevity from the beginning to the current day. Thanks for your time reading, Pepsi P.S. LoL Ur IGN is "sawnose".
http://www.opencarnage.com/index.php?showforum=105 Posted By Pepsi On OpenCarnage.com Don't be afraid we don't bite [Edited on 08.22.2009 12:38 PM PDT]

 • Don't suppose you know anything about the bug that stops the rcon console from putting any commands through to the server? Goodness knows why it happens, but plenty people find that they're unable to send any commands through rcon while Sidewinder is on. Not something that happens 100% of the time. I know that's out of the remit of what you're doing though.

 •
Unfortunately, the original reasons for splitting off CE still hold - most importantly, that CE maps are language-neutral, and PC (including Campaign) maps are language-specific. The engine can only deal with one of those at a time, and it would be a huge amount of work to get both running in the same "game". Also various other things, like that the shader tweaks made for CE were never tested against the campaign and would probably have to be revised. Basically, we made the right decision to separate them.
Talking about language thing... I don't know if you're already aware of this, but HaloCE's auto-update only work when you're using the english version, others (German, French, Italian... ) do not auto-update. :-) Would it be hard to add sv_say and the other nice things from HaloCE's to HaloPC ? ( Like players name on screen, F2 board...) Also, just tested 1.09, works fine. :-D

 • There wouldn't need to be any rewrite. It'd do nothing to slow them down I'm afraid. There are more ways to find the addresses you want than sifting through them.

 • Well if you have a user trying to sift through 20 different memory address that change all the time with movement it is going to be very hard for them to get it done well. You have to figure out which of them are fake and which ones are the right ones. It would break the current aimbots and force the people out there to either stop using it or to find a way to write a new one.

 • It wouldn't do anything. Plenty games try to prevent cheating by making sure they don't use static addresses for storing important information, but it does nothing since all you need to do is figure out the location that contains the pointer to the real information (in basic terms). The game always needs to know where the data it needs is, and if the game can find it, so can any other program.

 • Another idea could be to plant fake values for what the aimbot goes after into memory. From personal experience with using a program called "The Cheat" which searches the memory a program is using for values you can specify that Halo really only has value for an item in most cases. If how these values are loaded is changed and fake values are placed in as well it would throw off the aimbot as to which is the real set. Ofcourse this would involve a lot of work with the engine, but I think that should work. [Edited on 08.22.2009 9:19 AM PDT]
