I feel like they're kind of a waste of space. Not to mention they inhibit nutrient cycling in the ecosystem.

Although they aren't always problematic for that cycle, depending on where you choose to be buried it's actually possible to be buried without a casket or outer burial container. But usually this is only done for religious reasons. You can also choose to be buried in a plain pine casket, no furnishings or anything, completely biodegradable. But also typically chosen for religious reasons.
