It saddens me that Offtopic is taking so long to meld as a community and start making new lasting stories as a group. But then again, it still seems like 70% of the people here turn over every few months. We have very few veterans around to influence the masses toward any sort of direction, and not enough newbies sticking around long enough to form a new culture. Sure, there's a few relatively new peeps like Finn who have been awesome so far, but just too much turnover and too many terrible bait bitches sticking around because this place is full of easy targets. One thing I noticed when I was creating the history thread was that a lot of our most entertaining times as a community came from the actions of people who were considered "trolls" or "bad members" as they were being "rebellious" against the overly strict rule system. The difference being that people have simply become lazy and non creative because we get away with just about anything. I dunno. Just my mid-day ramblings on it all. Also.. FROG BLAST THE VENT CORE!! Also, also.. ALL HAIL CORTANA!!!

  • 100% agree with this. At least trolls back then were creative, now it's just the same gimmick spammers like DuuJ, or idiots like Nubbin and Dorit. People sadly give them plenty of attention when in all actuality everyone should mute them, or at least ignore them. The few veterans that do stay here mostly sit in groups rather than actively try and influence the community. I do agree Finn is awesome, I've seen him make some quality replies and stuff, and I think that's the type of thing we need more.

Well, don't get me wrong. We've always had our fair share of garbage members. Those people like the ones you mentioned come and go on the internet all the time and will be all but forgotten in a year. But yeah, there used to be this subculture of "troll" that seems to not exist anymore. A group of trolls who took a bit of pride in their work and came up with creative and actually goddamn funny threads. People everyone loved to hate, but everyone considered them just as much a part of this place as any other member. People like Capiton Render with his overly pompous attitude and Onion Beetle with his sometimes incredibly subtle but effective bait. These guys and many like them were all about the laughs. Now days people just want to spam porn and be hateful.

That's fair. PSU was an actual piece of shit who tried to meet up with members to fist fight. Dude took stuff way too far.

  • Yes exactly, nowadays trolls are just plain embarrassing. I'm ashamed for them to be a part of the community here compared to others like Capiton that you mentioned. They were good at the art, and were also capable of acting mature as well. I was excited to show my friends funny threads back then like Clockman when it first blew up and tell them I'm a part of a really great community. Now that's something I would be averse to.

  • I would have to agree. I'm fully prepared and excited for new gems to add to the history of the culture here but with the audience that is drawn in tends to fiddle fart around a bit and leave. Which I also point blame to the slack rules and rampancy. The toxic nature of the forums just breeds more of it and turns quality people away. A damn shame.
