While the swords are impressive enough as an offensive heavy weapon, their true glory comes from their ability to Guard.
The guard mechanic is simple to understand: you can reduce damage taken by anything, but the guard is less effective when used on the same element as your sword (don't fight fire with fire) the guard drains 1 energy per second, and additional energy per attack blocked (heavy attacks drain more energy) but trust me, as shitty as the energy drain sounds, it can seriously save lives -yours, or someone else's.
How much does Guard reduce damage? Put simply: a LOT. You can survive a direct hit from a Goliath Tank with over half health (spider tank doesnt even do 1/3). You can even Guard against Rockets, Sniper Rifles, shockwaves, and even Shotguns. I havent tested Guard on a super, but i expect it can tank at least 2 Arc Blade hits, or even 3 Stormtrance hits. The Guard cost for a heavy hit is 8, but this can save your ass in a clutch.
If you really want to be a guardian angel, you can block for your teammates, too. One of my teammates was about to be shot by a spider tank main cannon, so I i jumped up and used my Void Edge to go Jedi and deflect the shot so he could continue sniping and finish off the tank.
You know what they say, Guardians: the best offense is a good defense.

Absolutely. I took two stomps from Valus Ta'aurc whilst swinging on him, and was amazed at how effectively I was able to tank him and keep dishing out damage. If we had the ability to put Heavy Synths on the D-Pad, I could use the sword indefinitely by just investing my glimmer exclusively.

I know man. I took at least six direct hits in a row from the Melee cabal brother and didn't die. Crazy defense
