Official Feedback on The Taken King - The Gameplay

The one about gameplay. So what are your first impressions of the gameplay in the missions, Strikes, on patrol, and any other PVE experience you have done? What do you think of the enemies, are their new attacks and abilities interesting? What about your new abilities, how are you liking the new Subclasses? Are you enjoying the new mechanics in missions and strikes? Consider this the place to let us know about general sandbox gameplay for PVE, I will have a separate thread for PVP feedback. Tell us what you think.

  • Using the ghost to find the path was pretty cool, more things to make him relevant than just scanning and downloading things

  • Very good step in the right direction. It is now what should have been since the beginning.

    • So far I'm enjoying the Sunbreaker Subclass. Like its a nice cross between golden gun and the AoE of a Nova Bomb. Generates orbs nicely as well when against groups of enemies. Chucking Flamming Hammers across the map feels great and the animation looks and plays nice as well.

    • You guys knocked it out of the park story wise in comparison to Vanilla. My sister saw the Intel cinematic playing and asked what movie I was watching. There was some nice mission variety, especially with that stealth mission in Crota's end. The strikes all seem much more interesting, and the synergy between the new subclasses is incredible. Hitting a boss with meting point, tethering him to a bunch of ads(with blood bound on) and laying into the ads is amazing! It's such a satisfying moment. In particular, the Darkblade strike is INTENSE at the boss, and it's spectacular. I haven't gotten to sit down and grind out the new stoke playlist (school and work is so annoying) so what I'm about to say may be irrelevant. Legendary marks seem to be coming in really slow. Having to use them three at a time to upgrade gear is kind of annoying, since I'm also trying to save up for the Y2 exotics from the kiosks, buying faction items, and vanguard and crucible gear. Can anyone tell me how many Legendary Marks you get per strike? The Entropy's Pinnacle mission is a misstep. That boss fight SUCKS. It has the reverse problem of Year One missions. Here we have a boss with an agreeable amount of HP, but there's so many ads that you can't hardly damage the boss. You never have a super to use, and the "Echo of Oryx" will immediately drop you down to no shields throughout the fight. It's incredibly frustrating. I do wish the faction quests were a lower level, perhaps level 15. Considering faction rep comes at half the rate it used to, I think this should be adjusted. It simply does not encourage moving between the factions to get a look at all the gear. I declared to Dead Orbit (love that shotgun by the way) and I don't want to switch factions again because it'll just rest progress. The quests were brilliant. I have so much stuff to do I don't even know where to start. The dreadnaught is expansive, but the Court of Oryx has been somewhat dissapointing. I haven't seen a single random person come in and help us while playing, which I thought was the point of Level 2 challenges. I think that's everything. I've been writing this English class while my teacher drones on about past participles, so I think this was time well spent

    • Bosses. I love the new boss designs. You guys are deff going on the right direction with those. The Taken are creepy and fun. I about shit myself when I got hit with a blast from a taken captain's energy bomb thing and it all went dark lol Overall the Taken are a great addition. The dreadnaught is great. It's big enough to keep me occupied for a while. Me and a buddy jumped in and helped random ppl with the court of Oryx which was a blast. Everyone was helpful and amazing like how ppl were in the "old days" The light system is great. Thanks for letting us still be relevant in non end game content with our old favorites. I fought Oryx with TLW for the first part and killed with Ghally in the final part and loved every minute of it. The vet's tour..I don't even know what to say other than thanks. It's was a great gesture and an fantastic way to look back on last year. I started out on ps3 back in September then I bought a ps4 just for this game. Alas, my friends chose Xbox one. So I eventually ponied up the money and made the switch. And with a somewhat heavy heart had to leave my first character behind. And begin the grind anew. You got some bugs to iron out though..there are multiple global sound and animation errors that happen after 2.0 released that have never happened before. We need clan and group integration into the game. We need it. It's been a long wild ride but you guys are on the right track keep going strong. And throw the guys who didn't buy ttk a bone please. They didn't realise destiny was episodic which maybe you guys should have made more clear. At least let them play all their old stuff like they used to. Or at the very least come at and make a statement that destiny is pseudo subscription bases like it is and be done with it. That way everyone is on the same page and no one feels ripped off. Thanks for listening.

    • The Taken King is what destiny should have been. I thought the story was intense, very awesome. There's a lot more stuff to do, and the new gear and shaders are sweet. I had my issues with this game and with bungie but after this DLC this is how I remember bungie being. Props to the bungie crew for the awesome story and and new gameplay. I hope the next expansion is as good or better.

    • I've only had a few hours to play the new content and I really enjoy it but it seems like low level mobs are doing way more damage than they used to. I got shredded by a handful of level 4 dregs and shanks in the Divide because I went to change a weapon and wasn't fast enough to avoid a newly spawned group. They tore through me in what seemed like six hits. I'm level 40 and have 172 light. Could you guys tone down the amount of damage that trash mobs do? They've always been more of an annoyance than anything else, now they're a viable threat which is just ridiculous when they're 36 levels lower than we are.

      • The Taken are great to fight. I was a little concerned they were just reskined but their abilities synergize well with each other. And damn, they are relentless. Finding a spot to rest to get your shields up is hard. I was impressed by the new strikes. My favorite is the Darkblade or something like that. Fighting in that dark ass hole, dodging explosive thralls, and suddenly your face to face with the boss was hilariously fun.

So the story is great, all the quest lines after the story ends are great. But Destiny has always been 1% story 99% grind. Part of that was how bad the story was, but still. The rest is grind, and Destiny has always had a very poorly designed grind. The problem is that the most meaningful way to grind was to do strikes for vanguard marks and crucible for crucible marks. Even strikes didn't work like that at first, which was why so many people did the loot cave. You killed the loot cave but made tiger strikes give marks and the game was way better....If you could get level 24. Now everything depends on getting light and you'd think we could grind strikes and crucible for legendary marks. But you can't do this. You guys have put in absolutely draconian limits on the amount of marks we can get in a week. 15 from the daily heroic but can only do it once per account. 15 for the daily crucible, but again only once per account, not character. 30 max per weak per account for the weekly heroic strikes. Correct me if I'm wrong but there is just no way to grind out marks like tiger, roc, and Dragon strikes let you in year 1 for vanguard marks. But meanwhile the prices in the tower are the same as they always were. 150 marks for a weapon. 75 for a piece of armor. 125 for a helmet. Those prices are predicated on a mark income that we simply don't have if we can't play every day. Worse, all the best ways to get marks are dependant on light, which cannot be worked for. It's totally dependant on good enough RNG drops. So this makes everything you guys said about wanting us to get the necessary power quickly, and to put progression back in our hands and out of the hands of the RNG seem incredibly disingenuous, if not outright dishonest. My suggestion. Put a level 40 light level 200 strike play list that gives 5-6 marks apiece. Put marks back in the regular crucible. Make the daily heroic doable three times a day. Let the weekly heroic always drop marks. Let us actually grind for our gear. Edit: marks from rank up and public events as well please.

          • So far I played through the story and hit level 40 on my hunter. My one bit of feedback on the new enemies is that their "special" attacks (cloning for psions, blind for captains, titan bubble for vandals, etc.) should have a slightly longer cooldown. Just maybe 5 seconds longer. Otherwise they're not exactly "hard" to contend with, but they are annoying when it's nearly constant that they get used. But the gameplay is fast paced again which is nice, and the random placement of enemies keeps it fresher. I will say that I wish the bosses with turret cannons would be just slightly less aggressive in chasing you because it just leads to Bennie Hill moments where you run until your shield recharges. It takes the strategic element out of it. There should be spots with reasonable cover where you don't just have to be moving all the time (but where you can't just camp the entire fight either). Some areas did this fairly well. In fact, most of them did, but the Regicide mission mini-bosses were a little ridiculous about it. I just wish that would've translated back to year one content. As it is at year one light levels year one content got super slow. I imagine with new gear the pace will pick up though. Overall solid gameplay.

          • Legendary mark is too little and so much grind needed to get better items to do more activities. Worse than year one. The voice over and look of the game are improved. The story is too short. And there seems to be a bug with the atmospheric sfx in the tower. So quiet for some reason.

Storm caller is fun but pretty weak in pvp. I'm not saying make it stronger, but maybe give it a speed boost? It wouldn't be an issue at all if storm callers had blink, which seems weird that they don't. Storm grenade also feel really weak. Would be a lot better without that delay of the first strike after the grenade landing

            • Well had we got this last September I'd say this is a great game, but the fact is bungie and activision are to greedy, and cut this game into pieces, I can't get past it, destiny sucks and non of us will ever become legend.

              • Great! But the marks are a joke. strike should reward them everytime. you, without saying it, are capping it every week.

                • I only played through the story on all three of my characters, then looked into some of the older patrol areas to finish my bounties. I'll be playing strikes tonight. Overall I like the new taken abilities. Really adds a lot more than I'd have thought, and they don't feel like simply reskinned enemies to me. I like how enemies fighting in the dreadnaught actually feels like they're fighting. The taken corruption events in old patrols are cool. I'm almost surprised they weren't there last week like other precursor events. Having a TON of quests to do after the story is great. I'm really hoping that they'll get me to 240ish to 260ish light so I can start the true grind. Love the variety so far instead of the wasteland that we had when we hit 20. Weapon balance I need to reserve judgment on. The subclasses are amazing. Absolutely lived up to the hype for me. While sunbreaker is my favorite as predicted, nightstalker is my big surprise. Gameplay videos just didn't do the bow proper justice. It absolutely wrecks. I'm a tad worried that its power won't hold up though. I like the idea of the new grenades, but thermite and void wall are perhaps a bit TOO directional at times. Overall, gameplay wise I think you mostly nailed it. At the basic level that's always been Destiny's greatest strength. On the activities level there's been a weakness, and I'll need a lot more time invested before I can say if that's been addressed.

Tell us what you think.
I actually found myself feeling bad for the Cabal. I even passed up killing them on Phobos, though they had no qualms about shooting at me... The new Phalanxes will take some getting used to. I am not sure whether or not I like them being able to shoot me with a kinetic blast from their shields... Especially not that a-hole from the the stealth drive mission that guards the doorway. The phasing mechanic is interesting and makes for some fun interactions as well as good ways of farming Psions. Richard Garfield would be proud. I have not warmed up too the darkness bubble thing that the Taken captain shoots at you while on patrol. Then again, I was trying to kill him solo, so I am pretty biased about that one. The Dreadnaught is awesome. I love using the Indiana Jones-esque leap-of-faith bridges to find those Fragments. Ducking in the rabbit holes and finding random artifacts or other objects to scan is a lot of fun, too. I also am really enjoying the new cinematics and Cayde-6 as the comic relief. Well done, in that aspect! And the ability to skip cutscenes is a plus (for the older cutscenes, that is). I have yet to patrol the Dreadnaught, but have patrolled the Cosmodrome for those Taken Majors and the all-out chaos that brings has been intense as well as a bit frustrating (especially when there are no blueberries in the same server to absorb damage while I spam with my new Hawkmoon). I miss the wolves, but this has been a fantastic addition in their stead. Sadly, I am not sure that applying a smokey grayscale blur to the Taken enemies was the best move. They are poorly defined, making them uninteresting, visually. As far as the new subclasses, all I have used is Nightstalker. The new mechanic is refreshing and very effective if you're in a fireteam or have multiple blueberries to help out. As far as being useful to a solo player, I have yet to see it pan out. I must admit that having two grenades (one for an actual grenade and the other replacing my melee) is fun, but feels a little cheesy. However, with my new Old Guard shader, I feel like Batman whenever I throw a smoke grenade. Bob Kane would be proud. Overall, I really like the new expansion an look forward to acquiring the new subclasses for the Titan and the warlock. I wish my year one gear would be infusible... But maybe that's something for a future expansion. [fingers crossed]

                    • You -blam!-ed us by grandfathering us in at 34, we were too high level and it so far the gane has been a walm in the park, the light level system is dumb ... Not in the light levels but that easy mode says level hard mode states light level ... The two contradict and you can't judge difficulty. The gane mechanics are the same as always they've always been strong ... But the problem isn't the mechanics its lack level difficulty between default and heroic ... It uber easy or uber hard at the minute ... It's either no challenge or frustratingly impossible
