I know this sounds crazy, but hear me out. Let me know if others are talking about this too. I'd love to see what others think.
So... we have this new infusion system in Destiny. The point of that, is that weapons and armor will drop (from things like leveling factions) that have different light levels. I think there is a good chance that Destiny's new infusion system is that what drops will at least somewhat depend on what rank/light level YOU are. Especially since Bungie has admitted the RNG is based more on what you have now.
Think of it like any other RPG, or how blue weapons and armor worked while ranking up during Year 1 Destiny. It slowly got better as you ranked up, giving you stuff just above what your rank could attain. I'm suggesting that Legendary armor and weapons will work this way in The Taken King.

IF this is the case, then you would NOT want to completely level up your Dead Orbit, Vanguard, and Crucible factions all at once because it will give you RNG gear based on your low current rank/light level. Instead, there are two other options:
A. Just rank up one of them, grab that gear for a higher light level (if you can equip it), and then continue on ranking up the other ones as your rank/light level go up.
B. Complete the story missions. Get to rank 40. Then complete your faction levels and get gear that you can wear ONE AT A TIME so that your light level is going up, and you are turning in bounties at the same time.
This is all speculation, but I'm curious to see what you guys think. We will at least somewhat know how this all works once TTK hits tomorrow and we turn in our first package, but I feel like it could go a lot of different ways.
AT MINIMUM you could level up only one faction to begin with just to see what kind of stuff it gives you and make up your mind from there. :)
tl;dr
There's a chance leveling up factions right away might give you lower light level gear than if you did them one at a time and ranked up first.
EDIT: I should clarify, none of this will matter if you are just taking your time through the story and having fun. Because all the gear you get from faction drops will still be able to be infused later on. This is more for the sake of efficiency and for those going for world's first in the new Raid. :)
EDIT2: As others have pointed out, you will know this theory is wrong or right the second you level up your first faction in TTK. If it is the same light level as vendors are selling in the tower, then this theory is wrong. However, if you level your first faction and you get lower light level than what vendors are selling, then you can assume this theory is correct. :) Just check it after your first level up package.
EDIT3: There is gear already in the destiny database that shows this theory is most likely wrong. The Destiny Armory shows vanguard gear/crucible gear/faction gear at 280 light level. Some items says 260-290, but not the faction gear. Therefore it would be safe to say you get the same light level no matter what on the faction gear. I would still level up your first one with caution, and if it is true than carry on guardian! :)

1 Replyyou completely missed what the fraction quest rewards are it is in your best interest to do it assap

I think you're right and I was just discussing this. I'm going to wait until I reach 40. Also, doing the story unlocks vendor quests. I'm going to wait until after the vendor quests as well

can you do bounties to get to 40?

2 RepliesEdited by Broken Messiah: 9/14/2015 8:25:51 PMNo idea if that is how it will work, but if it does, you can use other gear obtained later to Infuse the lower gear (assuming you like the old gear's perks). Example: At level 34 I obtain a legendary chest piece with 200 defense. I get to level 40, get another package, and it has a chest piece with 250 defense. If i like chest piece #1, I can use #2 to Infuse it and raise the defense. Either way, I'm gonna be grinding like a mofo once I hit level 40 to buy a certain set of gear(the one that looks the best). Package gear is just a stepping stone.

Great thought, I'll definitely keep this in mind!

2 RepliesBut you are guaranteed an exotic from the faction quest. But all the other stuff like engrams and packages left unopened until lvl 40 sounds feasible
-
1 ReplyYeah, definitely not opening up any cryptarch package until I'm lvl 40. Who wants lvl 34 engrams anyway?
-
4 RepliesI thought infusion was just a way to level up your gear with other gear or something like that
-
1 ReplyI thought the same thing the other day. But the nice thing is only being able to pledge to one faction a week should mitigate people from leveling everything and missing out on better loot later.

No. Infusion is here to stop yo receiving better rewards as your light goes up
