Bungie Live Streams: What do you like and what would you change?

Greeting fellow Guardians, So I got another comment a little while ago from a Guardian who said that the Live streams have made the expansion less appealing and it made me really think about how Bungie have done them. I get what Bungie are trying to do with the live streams. It's a way to be "hip" and to reach out to the social media generation and kudos to them for embracing the avenues that exist today to promote their game. Unfortunately, I don't think they have anyone employed there who are really equipped to properly set up and run these events. So far we had - King Gothalion doing the reef reveal "NO RAID!" -Triplewreck doing the ToO reveal -Professor Broman with the PoE reveal -Mr Fruit with the Dreadnaught strike preview -Laced Up Lauren on the Court of Oryx preview I think that overall it is really cool that Bungie have brought in these community members to participate on these reveals, particularly with the overall dissatisfaction with Bungie's level of interaction with the community here on the forums. Where I think they have stumbled is that these guest have for the most part (outside of King Gothalion) been along for the ride. I'm actually re-watching the Reef reveal as I write this and in retrospect I'm really impressed and what Gothalion was able to bring to the stream with a mixture of conversing and also hitting them with actual questions (some of which made DeeJ's cheeks tense up lol). The rest of the guests weren't bad, but these are all established Twitch personalities who are used to being the focal point of a broadcast. Gothalion tried and succeeded in being a focal point to a large degree, but the other guests (while none of them were bad) seemed pretty much along for the ride. What I would like to see in future streams is the community guests to be prepped ahead and able to actually host the reveals. As the reveals currently function, for the most part it's been DeeJ hosting them and doing most of the talking. This is a problem. I don't want to sit and bash DeeJ (he gets enough), but I don't think he holds much credibility with the community because for all his "filthy casual" jokes, he's not a casual. He's not a gamer. He works for a game company and plays just enough to know what he's talking about. The second problem with these reveals is that they generally underwhelm. It's not for a lack of things to see, but the pacing isn't great and again, it's talking heads playing. I was so stoked for the first TTK Twitch reveal thinking that Bungie had learned from the first three. I actually thought from the preview trailer that maybe Nathan Fillion was going to guest host it. It wasn't bad and it was somewhat informative, but it sure wasn't an exciting watch. The Court of Oryx reveal was probably the most interesting gameplay wise and the most natural Fireteam interaction. ToO seemed exceedingly staged to let Triplewreck's team win. Broman freaked out a bit much (excitable guy) and the Strike the Dreadnaught team were a bit dry. Again I think if they are going to keep doing Live streams instead of traditional trailers and vidocs, they need to really make events out of these. The hosts and fireteams need to have time to play together beforehand and develop some chemistry and there need to be real hosts and less smarm. Again, these are guests who are used to running a stream and these reveals should be extensions of their particular channels. Out of the 5 guest hosts, Goth and Broman I think I have a pretty good idea what their channels are like. TW, Mr F and LUL? No idea and that kinda defeats the point of having them on. So what do you all think? Have you been happy with the streams? Would you prefer trailers and vidocs? And for fans of the Twitch hosts' channels, what were your impressions of how their guest appearances went? Did you feel like they were able to show their personalities and bring the same energy and level of entertainment they give their streams to the Destiny reveals?

  • Bungie comes across as they are pretending to have their own TV station in the streams they do. Watching David Dague choke up with Lauren in his view and say "DESIRE" was funny. Was almost like watching a kid talk to a girl for the first time on prom night. AWWWWWKWAAAARD. I won't favorite their twitch channel. If I do they will erect a paywall and charge people "LEVEL 45" to watch their streams. Yea. It's like THAT Jason Jones. ;)

  • I think all they've driven me to do is file a complaint against bungie and Activision with the BBB. I'm moving on, though i will return to the forums for your posts Lost Sols. Good luck and happy hunting in year 2.

    • Like nothing, would change everything. Specifically, asking real questions from the community and getting real answers from them

    • Thanks for clearing some things up for me. I for one thought those players were and are Bungie employees. After all, they have access to the new content, were non of us do. I was Not impressed in the game play, and the explanations were rather weak and mostly after thoughts. A little more context would have been good. Oh well. I'm pretty well done buying on faith. I'm getting most of the hype when update 2.0 drops. Going to see how broken it is without the taken. Like I said, I have no faith in the hype. And I'm not pleased I payed to play a Beta. For that reason alone, Bungie is no longer and never will be a AAA title company for me again.

I think the problem is that streams and such are a double edged sword. Although as you've said they're hip and kinda expected it's also dangerous to show your hand too early, which I think is the case here. TTK is seemingly unremarkable simply because it IS unremarkable. The fact that LUL is a boring personally to watch play it with two other boring people on a boring stream with a boring host only pours salt into the wound. There's no mystery, you've seen Court of Oryx and the laughably unimaginatively titled The Strike Brothers and they're just boring. Unfortunately you already know it thanks to the streams :/ A double edged sword.

All of the latest reveals were underwhelming to me. The content is just not there. The dreadnaught looks bland and just more of the same from inside the moon. The Court of Oryx is too small. Sure, the enemies have new fighting mechanics and that's great but the arena to fight in is just a shoe box.

        • Bump...I like how Bungie couldn't find anyone but their own employee's to fill the audience. Yep, that was the best part.

          • I have no problem with the streams themselves since I just end up watching a video of it or coming here to see a breakdown or PlanetDestiny. What I do mind is DeeJ, being anywhere near the stream. Someone who doesn't know much about the game, doesn't really care about the game and frankly is a at his job shouldn't be on my screen when watching anything Destiny related. End mini rant.

          • I was just thinking about this like a few days ago? After the court of oryx reveal. The original three for HoW seemed very unscripted (i.e. them getting creamed in the PoE reveal). And even though triples team was staged to win, I can see why you'd want to for a reveal like the trials reveal. Honestly, if they could format future streams like the one for the reef, they'd be hitting it spot on. Really good points in your post.

          • I can't watch them. At least, not with the sound on. Deej drops ill fitted buzz words into the narrative so often it's like listening to a bad oral report in first year high school marketing. Between that and trying not to yell at my television when he starts talking that tired old "we're listening" bullshit I just don't dig them.

          • So, I liked the two last streams if only because I feel like a lot of the gameplay videos have all been crucible and I like to have an idea of how effective things will be in the part of the game I actually play. That being said for three strike planet Destiny did it better, as they're really good about talking about how things feel and of course they can do commentary after the fact. I thought the reef reveal was just ok (as a reveal, they really did have the best guest for that), and the tower reveal to show off all the new stuff could pretty easily have been done without the stream. The only thing we got was what we were able to glean. I do wish the guests were better about asking the tough questions, or any questions really. Maybe I just don't care enough about twitch, and it's kinda cool to think of "one of our own" being there, but they never seem to ask questions really. Maybe gothalion was the best because he didn't really have to play and ask questions at the same time? Anyway, to be honest, the stuff game informer did this past month, and even the edge article, were all way more interesting and informative than the streams. A good twitch reveal should show us new stuff and try to answer questions, especially as they come in. The tower stream could have been that if it hadn't felt so staged and forced.

I love Gothalion he's the most "real" streamer and knowledgeable of Destiny but I think they should let one of us non streaming ordinary guardians have a chance to be in a revealing one day.

What I learned is that I like producers that don't lie to their customers, don't claim their game is something it isnt, don't charge full price for a half made beta, and don't expect us to throw more money at the screen for it. I learned from the final twitch event that bungie are still not answering our many questions and therefore I see no reason to give money to these ass hats! I'll be happy to spend $20 more for a complete game like SW Battlefront with already more content than destiny with ttk on opening day. One thing I would change...I'd have never bought destiny knowing what I know now. bungie can kiss my ass! BOYCOTT BUNGIE AND ACTIVISION

                • Hmmm, where to begin? Let's start with Deej. I'll have to disagree with you on this one. While I can see both sides of this coin, I prefer to have someone like him in this position. The reason why is simple. He really isn't a gamer and therefore he doesn't have a horse in this race. His views and presentation should always be neutral. As for the streams themself, well again I can see both sides of this issue. By going in cold we are getting an honest stream and nobody can question whether anything is rigged. If on the other hand they had time to practice, things would look to smooth and we'd have some people questioning the integrity of the stream. Now how can the stream improve? Well, I'd like them to do away with the Bungie employees sitting in the background. I'd rather see a crowd of actual players/fans as the audience. I'd also like for the subject matter expert for that particular stream, then sit and answer questions from that crowd for say 30-60 minutes.

I've watched the last three reveals and the Too reveal. I like the idea and I can understand that they are more or less a live-broadcast commercial, so I get that they invite people not for discussion, but as a little extra-something. So, I don't expect much from those things, however, I expect proper production values, I want to be entertained. And honestly: as things are now, I could produce something similiar in my basement... The last stream was a bit better, Deej can smilie! Wow. But most of the time the streams are so lifeless, I feel like I'm checking stock values or something... For example the first TTK reveal, with those staged "more vault" shit... does anybody really thinks this is funny? I expected something less "amateurish" from Bungie...

                    • Favorited and bumped. Chemistry is what these fireteams need and there never seems to be any with these guys. It's boring and they should either come up with a script to follow that describes everything new and at least creates chemistry or following your suggestion, they should play together and get a feel for each other. The court of Oryx looks like a lot of fun but with the long bouts of silence or awkward jokes going on it failed at providing an entertaining atmosphere, which I should remind you Bungie, that is what Twitch primarily is. An entertaining atmosphere. (For me anyways)
