As a father myself, I think you went way overboard! Challenge him to be better... Don't highlight low moments and expect your over punishment to incite change. Just my opinion...

This is a great perspective on punishment/redemption. As a 14 year-old, I have learned to accept the fact that my dad beloved in severe punishments because he tried "everything else" some years ago. Quite recently, I lied about not brushing my teeth after lunch, thus earning me 2 weeks of no electronics (phone included). Your words of wisdom might be useful to express my argument. Thanks.

I'm only speaking from experience. I was treated this way and learned how not to be. I expect you will do the same with your children some day. Everything can be a learning experience if you take the time to realize it could be.
