Gaming Industry Dominated by Boys? Yeah, Right!!
Ok, I don't disagree with this statement. I recently played the Archon Priest strike with a guy, and he told me (and he didn't mean to sound rude/sexist) that it was uncommon to meet a girl in a boy-dominated industry. I agreed. He also warned me that when boys actually, finally clue in (he said 'begin to clue in' but I say 'actually, finally,' because it takes people FOREVER to figure out I'm a girl!!) they can get very stupid. I told him I've already had a bunch of idiots try to hit on me, so not to worry. I also said that I know lots of girls who love to game, but are not too keen on showing it because of the fact that boys do, in fact, 'dominate' the gaming industry. Gaming girls, talk to me! It'll be nice to show boys what we've got!

1 ReplyClose female friend of mine told me there was a study that stated that there was in fact more female gamers than male gamers. I have yet to validate it to see for myself though but I believe her. Still. Why make these threads? If you want 80%(probably a lot lower but I'm exaggerating just for the sake of it) of male gamers to stop hitting on you, then you should say something to them and ignore them if they persist. Let's look at the other side of the coin, you, as in the female gamer. Not you in particular since I do not know you, are also guilty of this, some of you feed off the attention. Which sets up the typical male gamer(not all) to believe that such behaviour is acceptable. Put your damn foot down, don't vent on a forum where you'll just get ridiculed for your ideology because it's biased and opinionated to the readers perspective. Do you feel oppressed?

I think that the important thing to remember about people of the opposite sex in gaming is the anonymity of the internet. Psychologically speaking, when people are dehumanized by online gaming (meaning that a single person doesn't see other gamers in the world as full people, maybe just as targets or as other characters who sound and act like people) there is a lot of disinhibition. So now that you cannot empathize with other people on a certain platform, you no longer care as much about interacting with them like how you would act to someone that you were physically communicating with, because they become 2D personalities over the internet. Just like me right now. To you, I am but a 'thing' responding to your forum topic because you cannot observe my feelings and wants and fears and desires thru the internet. As I was saying, now that this girl gamer has become a 'female presence,' the attracted person will use this presence as a way to maybe practice their flirtation skills, because there is no risk to you when you are anonymous. It is this, I want to say solipsism (only being aware that you are a gamer and thus not thinking about other people), that drags people to hit on girl gamers. I am guilty of thinking this way, as most gamers are (let's be honest, if everyone thought about everyone's feelings first, a lot more people would throw games of trials of Osiris just to make other people feel better.) This type of thinking erases all remorse about beating the other person in competitions, saying nasty things to people, or in this case flirting. That is part of the reason. That is my opinion on the topic. Tell me what you think. And if you want to give me shit, it has no effect on you because thru the internet you cannot observe that I am conscious or alive or thinking. Go ahead. Your rage fuels me.

It's not surprising in fps. A lot of females play destiny and CoD since it became popular. Some obviously just play them for stream attention unfortunately. My sister plays the sims and that's it. Don't see them much anywhere else tho. Maybe League and WoW but those games in my opinion are ridiculously lame and don't gain any of my attention so I pretty much eliminate them from existence lol.

3 RepliesKeep it respectful in here, people. I think from an industry and gamer angle, gaming still has that painfully outdated "old boy network" mentality, but it's changing. It may take until the next generation of gamers for everyone to run out of dookies to give, but it will happen. Some of the gamers and industry peeps I respect the most, and whom I have the most fun gaming with are gamer/mom/professional/community leaders/alien face wreckers. And I fit comfortably in some of their backpacks.
