Deej, Gear Ascension is mandatory

Just watched the little IGN chat video, Deej... How am I supposed to become a legend if I don't have a trademark weapon that becomes legendary with me? "Being married to the same gun for 10 years sounds boring" is YOUR opinion... Some of us like the idea of having a signature weapon, and some of us, myself included, don't like where the art is going on the new weapons and armor or hate enemy-themed gear like The Dark Below kit. If you make the new weapons and armor solid contenders, people will naturally want to acquire them, rather than being forced to by numbers... And denying a play-style because You think it is boring is wrong. The real reason the ascension system is mandatory, however, is because this isn't an MMORPG! In a standard MMO, your combat is derived from your class and augmented by the numbers provided by gear. Sure some swords might swing faster or slower, but autoattack is like 2% of your DPS and combat. This is a shooter with live, twitch firearms... Every single one of which runs a little differently than the next. When a player finds a "favorite" gun, it isn't just his favorite looking weapon, it is his favorite running weapon. I have run a custom tuned 1911 pistol in competition for almost 12 years now... Are there better modded guns out now? Yes Are there a lot of newer guns I have liked and have added to my collections and ran? Yes But the bottom line is I cannot run any gun as fast or as hard as that 1911. It has been tuned to my preferences and trained with until it is an extension of my hands, so that's the gun that I drive in matches that count... Just like Fatebringer drivers in Destiny (Or in my case Timepiece and Grim Citizen) You cant treat Destiny like an MMO because it simply isn't one. I would actually like an answer about plans for long term ascension, because I am done tomorrow if all my work acquiring, leveling and customizing my characters is gonna be moot in 3 months... I was done before until you announced Etheric Light. Edit: Great comments, thank you! We are not alone, and we want an answer, Deej!

What deej really means by boring is unprofitable for bungie. If we have nothing to chase we have no reason to buy the next dlc in their view and they are not being creative enough (or too stingy) to give us other reasons to play (ie enough content). If there was enough other content other than chasing new weapons that would be whats used to sell dlc but they are onto a cheaper way to drive dlc sales. Making real content I gather is more expensive than just adding more weapons as content. For one they would have to hire a decent story teller given their good one walked out on them. I also think the speculation that the game was chopped up to sell as dlc is making more and more sense as we see what is happening with the game. I dont even think they have had to create this content from scratch. It was already done. All they have had to do is figure out how to package it and sell it to us. This for me is where their problems of weapons being too powerful comes in. Imagine if everything had been released at the beginning there would not have been this problem but then the game would not have been as profitable either. The result is we get a mess of balancing patches and new ingame economies to try and make this business model work. Its proving it works well too and is highly profitable for them but its not good for the player as the quality of the game we are getting is sacrificed for maximised profits. I have no doubt if destiny was released as intended pre activision with original story tellers story and vision we would have had a 10 out of 10 master piece. What we got was a 6/10 shell of that with the remaining 4 out of 10 sold to us as dlc. This isnt even really a conspiracy but known business practice taught in any university round the world. This is just the first time we have seen something of this kind in the gaming industry of this magnitude. The lengths they are going to to maximise profits and minimise costs is something I have never seen in gaming but given its success unfortunately this may become more common. My hope is that there will be enough of a backlash to this game and to their business practices that no other gaming company would even dare to try impliment anything like this again. Their should always be a balance of quality and profitability. Destiny is in my view far to weighted on the profitability ledger of this scale. We need to exert our weight and influence on this scale in demanding quality over profitability by not supporting it.
