Alright, I've played a little online of Halo Wars (pretty nice game in my opinion) and I've noticed something after a while of playing... some units just don't get used at all, if ever. Sure, everybody loves scarabs, and I myself stand guilty of dedicating 100% of my resources to building up 20 Hawks with which to steamroller my competition.
...but does anybody ever use flamethrowers? (or 'hellbringers', whichever you prefer to call them) What about Gremlins, or even Cobras? And for the Covenant, I still have yet to find any particular use for Ghosts, Grunts, or Jackals.
Has anyone used any of these units to any kind of effect? Are they ever worth investing in during a game?

Two fully upgraded cobras locked down in my base = nothing gets close and lives to tell about it.
Posted by: derka derka Grizzly
Grizzly Tanks are pretty powerfull and they can take a lot of damage, let alone three or four could easily take out a Scarab. From experience I would say Gremlins are useless.

Well, since nobody has said much about the Gremlins I'll tell you my expereince with them. The other day while playing 2v2 on terminal Moraine(not sure how to spell) I was Anders and decided to focus on just nothing but hawks and get a quick and easy win. Well my enemy researched wolverines all the way and owned my army of hawks in a matter of seconds. So after about three failed attempts against their wolverine/scorpion/cobra army I decided to make fully upgraded gremlins and they are absolutly amazing! When using their special they take out a vehicle army with ease. In short, Gremlins when fully researched are very effective against vehicles.
Posted by: paulster5315 Flamethrowers are epic when fully upgraded. They can take out grunts superbly. Jackals are quite useful when fully upgraded, as well. Taking out infantry is what they're good for. I've never really used gremlins, but when I do, they're pretty useful, especially when your enemies are wraithrushing. Cobras also are spectacular at taking care of long-range vehicles while locked down, assuming they're not against wraiths firing from behind a hill. Grunts, as said before, are good in large numbers, as well as cheap and quick to produce. Ghosts are are like grunts. Great in large numbers. Choppers are the same as Ghosts. Great in large numbers, too. Has anyone tried ramming choppers into other small vehicles? The least useful unit, I'd have to say, would be the Suicide Grunts. They die before they can be put to any use. They'd have to be made in large numbers.
Overall suicide grunts are pretty useless, but I have seen some pretty clever tactics used online. On the 3v3 snow level, a cloaked arbiter ran behind my base and teleported suicide grunts to blow up my advanced reactor, then teleported away. He did it 3 times before one of my teamates finally got fed up and posted a scarab on the hill in between my bases.

Flamethrowers are really bad, as well as jackals.

Grunts probably, I don't even bother researching them.
-
Why all the Jackal hate? Combined with Hunters, they're near unbeatable.
-
How do Grunts suck? I use them all the time and drown my foes in their blood.
-
Against a covenant leader, just ten flamethrowers can kill him pretty quick if you can surround him. Same with Jackals. Also, 3v3 on Fort Deen is where I see the majority of Vultures. If you control the shield walls, you can just run 5 or so over the mountains to their forward base, unleash mega barrage, then have someone MAC blast it. Its an instant base kill in less than 3 seconds, with no casualties, because (unless their anti air is close-by) it takes a while for them to mobilize. Then you just retreat, and repeat the process when your mac blast recharges.

Gremlins are fantastic.
-
Each unit has it's own special advantage or ability. The trick is getting them up fast enough along with making sure you can properly match whatever the other team is using. Gremlins are called support units for a reason. Send an army of them to attack a vehicle army, and chances are you will probablys lose. Or if you don't, then you will be hurting. Alot. Combining units to amplify their use, now THERE is the true strength in the units. Grunts are still useless cannon fodder lol.
Posted by: SIMM0NS77 51 Grunt Squads > All
I once destroyed a Scarab using fifty Grunt squads.
Posted by: Spartan Tickler cyclops are beasts when destroying another player's base and they also repair your other units and buildings when not in combat
Indeed, in multiplayer I would have to say Flamethrowers since they aren't all that good unless you Upgrade them fully, and I usually do that last since I do not create too many Flamethrowers.
-
Gremlins are O.K. You just have to have the patience to fully upgrade them. And for the flamethrowers, they are practically useless for multiplayer.
Posted by: Werdy Flamethrowers are actually increadibly effective against infantry. Twenty fully upgraded flamethrowers could take on a maxed out army of ODSTs. ODSTs are very effective (unless the enemy has Grizzlies) against pretty much anything, they're cheap, and you can have lots ( You can also Hot Drop them in to keep a battle going for a good long while).
their is 1 easy way of killing flamethrowers though. move your units.
-
I never use flame thrower guys, Jackals or Wolverines. I use Gremlins at first but eventually they'll die and I'll replace with Vultures/hawks.
-
1 ReplyJackals are one of the best units in the game.
-
If you think Jackals suck: I was once down to my last base and had pretty much no hope of winning. I decided, as a joke, to make an army of jackals. The reason I did this is because I hate jackals and wanted to see 100 of them die. It should have been a suicide mission. However, I sent them in and they destroyed the entire enemy army with almost no casualties. I then forced on their base and practically destroyed it...... Unfortunately Mr Scarab didn't like my Jackal army and you probably know the rest.

I ALWAYS use jackals. When fully upgraded, they completely SHRED enemy infantry in groups, and when you play on Heroic or Legendary, odds are you are going to need to spam a lot of cheap fast units for the massive attacks the AI somehow churns out every thirty seconds. The Jackals are AMAZING when you put them in cover.

Suicide grunts. Ensemble spent two weeks researching terrorist videos and watching the first part of The Kingdom just to understand it.
-
I have never once built a flamethrower.
Posted by: Agusta1 Wolverines. I never see them used or the Cyclops. they have no real purpose
how much do you play halo wars to have not seen a wolverine used?
-
you can overwhelm an enemy with just grunts and the arbiter. send arbiter in and send grunts through the teleporter thingy constantly and you will destroy the enemy because they wont be able to keep up with the flood of units. [Edited on 03.31.2009 4:03 PM PDT]

Jackals are actually very useful if you fully upgrade them. Gremilins, don't use them at all really Grunts are pretty worthless. Flamethrowers (if they actualy manage to survive unill 3 stars) can be a good thing to send in as a suicide squad.
