Is Locke a special Spartan IV or is he just stupid, thinking he can take on Chief and all?

I don't think you understand the nature of Locke's mission or militaristic chain of command.

  • I understand how the chain of command works. If a guy who is a higher rank than you gives you an order you follow it without question. I don't know much about Locke's mission though. I've only now decided to get back into the books and stuff because of Halo 5. I just don't see why Locke is so confident in chasing down Chief.

  • There's a huge difference between being confident and being arrogant. And you sound like you think he's arrogant. But the point of bringing up the Chain of Command is that it doesn't matter if he can take Chief or not. He was ordered by superiors to track the Chief down and bring him back to the UNSC. Whatever he thinks regarding the mission whether it's good or bad is irrelevant.

  • I'll revise my question then. Why did the brass think Locke would be able to take Chief? Do they just assume he's old and out of touch or is it the lack of Cortana?

  • Because Locke is one of the best, if not the best, manhunters humanity has. Blue Team's gone AWOL, and when shit hits the fan with the Guardians and missing colonies, the UNSC needs their best soldiers available to them.

  • So they send Locke to tell Chief to come back? Without even considering that a soldier as loyal as Chief probably has a good reason for being AWOL? I still have trouble wrapping my head around this. Mostly due to ignorance of post-343 era lore.

  • Just because the Master Chief has saved humanity doesn't mean he's exempt for military law and regulations. Going AWOL is illegal any way you frame it. However, your line of thinking in that Chief should be allowed to do what's necessary isn't exempt from the lore. In the E3 2015 Halo 5 Demo Buck talks about how the UNSC isn't going to be very happy with Osiris for going after the Chief.

  • Who is Osiris? A faction in the UNSC or is that Locke's team?

  • Osiris is a Spartan-IV fireteam. Also, when I said UNSC in my last post, I more so meant the troops and soldiers of the UNSC.

  • He's not being sent to kill John, he's being sent to find him, find out why he's gone AWOL, and bring him home to the UNSC. Locke is an acquisitions specialist - this involves the retrieval of important objects (like Forerunner artefacts and such), as well as tracking and/or assassination of high-value targets. He grew up as a freelance assassin and then was taken in by ONI to be trained with his specific skillset in mind. That is why Locke has been sent after John. This sort of thing is his job.

  • More of a manhunter than an assassin.
