Not sure how many of you know this so I decided to make a thread. Link to article.
Update: Check out this new interview with DeeJ and Urk via IGN! They flat out confirm that you won't get reset to level 20. (Around 18:00 minutes in)
Update 2: You will be your highest level achieved. That means taking off your higher level armour before the release will not drop you down to 20.

Interviewer: Will you get reset to level 20?
Urk and DeeJ: Nope.
Urk: If you're a 32 or level 34 (examples) that's what's going to show when you start up The Taken King.

I hope that clarifies everything.
There have been many worried or curious as to whether your level would drop to 20 when The Taken King launches. It will not. You will automatically become the level that your armour equates to.
DeeJ also confirmed that players who have hit the existing cap of level 34 will “take their first steps” in The Taken King at that same level. Players who are of a lower but still end-game level (say 26, which you could achieve in vanilla Destiny without raiding) – will still be able to play The Taken King content, and will level up quickly.
What this seemingly means is that your experience-based level will jump to level 34 if your Light level when TTK drops is 34 (from what we understand). That said,
Bungie has not yet finalised what the entry level for The Taken King content will be, DeeJ added.
So everything is still subject to change and tweaking. I hope that clears things up for everyone.
Edit: Here's my understanding in a breakdown for more clarity:
"Hard" Levels (my term): 1-40 — levelled up through experience.
Light level: This is your power indicator. While you might be level 40, you can still be under the recommended Light power level for an activity, meaning it'll be (a bit) hard for you.
As of The Taken King and update 2.0, your Light level will be calculated based on your total attack and defence statistics rather than the combined total Light attributes of your armour. Some missions will have recommended Light levels, to indicate whether the gear you’re wearing is up to the task.
Also, here's an interview you may not have seen. It barely has over 50,000 views!
IMPORTANT
For those still unsure if what I'm saying is confirmed, hear it from DeeJ's mouth in this gamescom interview. This is also the video linked above.

Bump hopefully more people read this
-
The amount of times you have to confirm this is hilarious
-
I said this on a post and everyone said I was wrong....
-
And that is how... *sips tea* ...you nuke a rumour.
-
I want to be level 20 and grind for level 40 actually...
-
I would just like to know that my Eclipse Maw and Nerigal Savant stuff won't be considered low-tier. I really like how it looks, and I don't want to feel like I have to wear top-tier armor, because then everyone will be wearing the same stuff again. And I wasn't a huge fan of the Deathsinger gear.
-
I'm hoping we get reset to lvl 20 and have to grind my way up to lvl 40. It will make the games longevity go up and will split the dedicated players from the casual players more
-
Personally I don't like the new idea of levelling up because I only have approximately 6 hours spare a week and so I do raids and prison to level me up not gameplay time.

Reply for read later please

Depends on how I'm felling
-
You will automatically become the level that your armour equates to.
Nice one!
-
Damn.. I was gonna equip junk gear so I could grind from 20. Well, thanks for the confirm, sir. *sighs and kicks dirt*
-
Am i the only one who saw it? Us warlocks has arc bolt as well. You know what that means..
-
Edited by ZetaScorpii: 8/7/2015 9:30:26 PMI'm gonna forever be 34 cause I'm done with Destiny 9/14.
-
Edited by IronNinja22: 8/8/2015 10:11:36 PMSo what happens if you take off all your armor right before the release?
-
We will be level40 and people will still ask for gjallarhorn for crota and skolas
-
As far as I'm aware LS stays at 34 but yours level is 20.
-
The discussion here makes me want to leave. Way too much speculation. Ill just wait a month and see whats up then.
-
From what I understand we will be light level whatever we are but base level 20 OR 25 because that's the lowest level for the first mission

This is a good lesson for people who aren't familiar with language. He never once says you enter in at level 34. The company line is, "you enter in at your current level," which for 99% of people is level 20. You gear makes your light level 34. But your characters total natural level is 20. DeeJ is very careful everywhere to never mention level 34, even when flat out asked the question. This entering at level 34 stuff is not confirmed and their continued use of the company line actually points to the opposite. They are being deliberately evasive. Not that I mind though. I don't care if I drop down to 20 and have actual level progression which allows me to wear whatever armor I want. Time to break out the old Tengu Operant engraved set I've been saving. That armor is awesome. Edit: The first link to the VG article is kind of funny. The "journalist" is a bad writer. He says that DeeJ confirms that you enter in at level 34, and lists the interview at gamescom as his source. But if you watch that interview, DeeJ never says this. The article is misinformed. Edit 2: I watched the Luke smith interview that didn't have many views too. He actually comes right out and says he is not going to talk about the leveling system. We've had more information since this interview though, but for the purposes of the level argument, this interview does nothing to support a 34 entry to TTK. It does mean that things are changing enough that he is excited to share them. Edit 3: Since I'm still getting comments from people not reading the replies below, I need to edit. Since this post, the new interview with DeeJ and Urk has been released, which Charlemagne has linked above. In it, Urk finally and directly answers the 34/34 question. So here is the first and only instance of Bungie confirming level 34 starting in TTK. As I've said since the beginning, when I get a clear response and not doublespeak, I'll believe it. So yeah, Urk said it and now I believe it. I've learned my lesson since the HoW Raid debacle last time to not believe anything until precise confirmation is delivered. Here we have it.

Would be cool to see everybody lvl 20
-
Can someone reply to this for later? Stuck at my parents 40 miles from my wifi.
-
Well... I don't see how we will be level 34. We have been level 20 all this time... LIGHT is the only reason we were able to gain a higher level. If they are getting rid of light, then logic would say we fall to level 20. I would take this with a grain of salt until the game actually drops. Deej is quite the word dancer.
-
Thanks Charlemagne that was useful info :)

So all three of my characters will be 34
