Not sure how many of you know this so I decided to make a thread. Link to article.
Update: Check out this new interview with DeeJ and Urk via IGN! They flat out confirm that you won't get reset to level 20. (Around 18:00 minutes in)
Update 2: You will be your highest level achieved. That means taking off your higher level armour before the release will not drop you down to 20.

Interviewer: Will you get reset to level 20?
Urk and DeeJ: Nope.
Urk: If you're a 32 or level 34 (examples) that's what's going to show when you start up The Taken King.

I hope that clarifies everything.
There have been many worried or curious as to whether your level would drop to 20 when The Taken King launches. It will not. You will automatically become the level that your armour equates to.
DeeJ also confirmed that players who have hit the existing cap of level 34 will “take their first steps” in The Taken King at that same level. Players who are of a lower but still end-game level (say 26, which you could achieve in vanilla Destiny without raiding) – will still be able to play The Taken King content, and will level up quickly.
What this seemingly means is that your experience-based level will jump to level 34 if your Light level when TTK drops is 34 (from what we understand). That said,
Bungie has not yet finalised what the entry level for The Taken King content will be, DeeJ added.
So everything is still subject to change and tweaking. I hope that clears things up for everyone.
Edit: Here's my understanding in a breakdown for more clarity:
"Hard" Levels (my term): 1-40 — levelled up through experience.
Light level: This is your power indicator. While you might be level 40, you can still be under the recommended Light power level for an activity, meaning it'll be (a bit) hard for you.
As of The Taken King and update 2.0, your Light level will be calculated based on your total attack and defence statistics rather than the combined total Light attributes of your armour. Some missions will have recommended Light levels, to indicate whether the gear you’re wearing is up to the task.
IMPORTANT
For those still unsure if what I'm saying is confirmed, hear it from DeeJ's mouth in this gamescom interview. This is also the video linked above.

Better start saving those armour cores.
-
LoL so they finally came back to the way they made the game to begin with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBNdrJMwrkc
-
Muted
-
That's why people will start new characters and let them stay at Level 20 so they have something to work for.
-
Better start stealing engrams from the cryptarch. -1 karma. Fallout fans would understand.
-
Well that kinda sucks. I almost wanted to be level 20 so I would have something to work for
-
Thank you sir many crisis averted
-
Finally they flat out said it instead of being vague
-
That's almost like when HOW came out. If you were 32 when HOW came out you started as a 32. I think they did the same thing when TDB came out #sarcasm
-
I hope they increase the level cap to 50 then. 16 levels isn't going to be a big jump. I only have 2 characters so I can grab a friend and do it from the beginning at least once :)

Great news! Hopefully more people can easily solo crota! ~TheGreatNike

Every expansion so far, including this one, is clearly designed to make us replay old content for no reason. They touted this 10 year journey where our guardian move between games, yet every update resets our progress and invalidates all our achievements. Upgraded all your exotics before DLC 1? We will force you to level them again, rewarding those who didn't put in the effort the first time. Achieved flawless raider? We're giving it away for free now to any scrub in Prison of Elders. Achieved the highest available light level? We're resetting you to 20 and giving other players a free level boost. You're now on the same level as brand new players. Proud that you've mastered all the raids? Players who have only done story missions will now be at the same level as you when level advantages are enabled.
-
Well... I'm dropping my Titan level down to 20...
-
Are exotics upgradable? Or are all year 1 items obsolete for end game TTK content
-
I can't understand how people thought that would be the case in the first place. It doesn't make sense in any way.
-
Even if your lvl 1 you'll be a 34(assumed) as well.
-
Unfortunately I for one would like to be lvl 20 and grind my way to lvl 40. It would give the game a more RPG feel to it like it was meant to be, in my opinion. Lvl 34 to lvl40 would not take very long, I don't think it would anyway.
-
Wait! If level 40 is maxed then things like VOG are gonna be insanely easy! We're gonna be able to like 1 shot Atheon and 1 hit crota
-
While that does mean that the grind to 40 won't be as satisfying, I appreciate the confirmation.
