Not sure how many of you know this so I decided to make a thread. Link to article.
Update: Check out this new interview with DeeJ and Urk via IGN! They flat out confirm that you won't get reset to level 20. (Around 18:00 minutes in)
Update 2: You will be your highest level achieved. That means taking off your higher level armour before the release will not drop you down to 20.

Interviewer: Will you get reset to level 20?
Urk and DeeJ: Nope.
Urk: If you're a 32 or level 34 (examples) that's what's going to show when you start up The Taken King.

I hope that clarifies everything.
There have been many worried or curious as to whether your level would drop to 20 when The Taken King launches. It will not. You will automatically become the level that your armour equates to.
DeeJ also confirmed that players who have hit the existing cap of level 34 will “take their first steps” in The Taken King at that same level. Players who are of a lower but still end-game level (say 26, which you could achieve in vanilla Destiny without raiding) – will still be able to play The Taken King content, and will level up quickly.
What this seemingly means is that your experience-based level will jump to level 34 if your Light level when TTK drops is 34 (from what we understand). That said,
Bungie has not yet finalised what the entry level for The Taken King content will be, DeeJ added.
So everything is still subject to change and tweaking. I hope that clears things up for everyone.
Edit: Here's my understanding in a breakdown for more clarity:
"Hard" Levels (my term): 1-40 — levelled up through experience.
Light level: This is your power indicator. While you might be level 40, you can still be under the recommended Light power level for an activity, meaning it'll be (a bit) hard for you.
As of The Taken King and update 2.0, your Light level will be calculated based on your total attack and defence statistics rather than the combined total Light attributes of your armour. Some missions will have recommended Light levels, to indicate whether the gear you’re wearing is up to the task.
Also, here's an interview you may not have seen. It barely has over 50,000 views!
IMPORTANT
For those still unsure if what I'm saying is confirmed, hear it from DeeJ's mouth in this gamescom interview. This is also the video linked above.

Wow! Thanks for the info!

If you like your plan, you can keep your plan.

Conjuration raised to 11

i have 2 questions, first is I don't see myself getting to 34 anytime soon since I'm pretty bad at trials and have nobody to do Poe 32 and 34 so I can get a chance at boots or something, so if I have a level 32 and a 33, will they stay that level in taken long or will I get reset? In other words, can I only get the boost if I'm 34? And my second question is if I buy the collectors edition bonus pack on release, will I still get ALL of the class items or just class items for the characters I have? That also goes for the pre order bonus with the Suros shaders

anyone else deleting a character and starting completely fresh when TTK drops?
-
Why did it take this long for this to be settled. If Deej simply answered the question in the very first interview, rather than his normal evasive self, it would never have been an issue. Why can't he just plain answer questions without sounding like he's hiding something?

Ur my favorite mentor ^-^

Hi Charlemagne. Would by any chance give me the combo to your vault?
-
I think before Ttk I'm gonna make one character level 20 on purpose just to grind again with all new gear. If I don't like it, I can always use the one time consumable.

Thank you my friend

Finally.. A mentor posts this. No one believes me
-
the way they make it seem is your light level is basically your item level now (for any ex/ existing WoW or ffxiv players here) sounds like they are adding in a more mmo style gearing system

Directions unclear, penis stuck in toaster.
-
Yes, it was straight up confirmed in the latest IGN FireTeam chat. DeeJ said you will stay 34.
-
Why do people want to grind the 20? I don't see the point in grinding the XP for the 20 levels if you're already 34. You rank up by completing missions, bounties, strikes, raids, etc... haven't you already done enough of that? it's nothing different. I'm sure you're going to do all of the new content any way. I think the grind will be for the new higher ranked armor and weapons. I myself might start new characters but not because I want to grind the 20.

Reply for later

If I delete one of my characters but keep the armour and make a new character and get them to level 20 but I don't put the armour on will I be level 20 in TTK?
-
I have one question
-
Obviously we can't have challenges lol. Day one max level again
-
I'm going to play all the story missions on a high level that way I get more XP
-
Ugh i wantd the level 20 grind :/
-
Damn it. I wanna be lvel 20. I like the grind
-
Better start saving those armour cores.
