Should I save my Etheric Light for The Taken King?

The Taken King will come with an increased level cap, that much is certain; as to exactly how high the new level cap will be, and how leveling up and ascending gear will work after 9/15/2015, we have no idea. I'm wondering... will I even need my Etheric Light anymore when The Taken King is released? I've seen a lot of strange things in The Taken King's gameplay footage; for starters, all of the brand-new gear in The Taken King appears to be capped at Level 34, with no Ascend nodes. Second, Light Level progress now appears to be tracked; if you look at the gameplay footage, there is now a blue XP bar at the bottom of the screen, where there is normally a green one as you progress from Level 1 to Level 20. Normally, this bar can only be viewed in the character screen, and only tracks your progress to your next Mote of Light. Maybe now it'll increase your Light Level as well? Third, Bungie has replaced the Attack values on all weapons with Light value; does this mean weapons will now level up with our characters? Finally, none of the brand-new gear being introduced in The Taken King have Ascend nodes; and yet, all of the new armor and weapons are capped at Level 34. Perhaps this is an indicator of a new system for leveling up? I really hope Bungie can answer some of the questions at Gamescon; we've a little over a month to go until the release of The Taken King, I want to know how I'll go about ascending my old gear in the future, and whether or not Etheric Light will still have a role to play.

  • Upgrade material has changed every DLC. I very much doubt Etheric light will be valid in TTK.

      • Etheric Light should be obsoleted because it introduce in HoW. There should be introduce new stuff. And Exotic Shard, Strange coin, mote of light should be still using in TTK.

        • All I can suggest is that you should save them, nothing you spend them on now will be used for very long, but they may be useful in TTK. If they don't have a direct use in TTK, they will at the very least be valuable as a trade-in for something else, similar to the trade system for VOG level materials.

        • I believe Bungie stated that they don't want our old weapons to have an effect in TTK. They want to introduce all new weapons and make us get stuff all over again. So my guess is, no, saving your Etheric Light for TTK is absolutely useless.

          • Ascending doesn't apply to TTK gear. If you look at the "Ascend" option it says, "upgrade this armor/weapon's defense/attack to the highest possible in Year 1.

            • It is possible the etheric light will be used to trade for faction xp, along with other soon to be more useless upgrade materials

From what I have seen, your over all level is not dependant on getting gear with light, but instead by gaining XP. Light level on gear will increase attack and defence values but will not level up at all. From all the game play footage I have seen, I'm going to guess that you will not be able to use your etheric light to upgrade anything, into TTK. A light level 42 will transfer over to your total light level in TTK. From what I have heard, we will be able to get up to 400 light total. Just guessing, but if you take over all your 42light gear, I think that means we will start at a total light of 168,(42x4) and work our way up from there... That said if you don't use your etheric light, and you go into the taken king with 33light gear, it may be stuck there.. Maybe. Etheric light will not max your armour to the max light level, it will only go to 42. So I think you may as well use all of your light on the gear that you want, just incase it becomes redundant in the DLC. From all the info we have been given, using your etheric light after the 15th will not be of any benefit. Just do it! Spend it all now!

            • upgrade materials change every DLC what i'm hoping is that only raid gear can bring you to the max level. Especially considering that it's gonna be the toughest raid yet that will prove skill from all these people who get to 34 in a few days. Met a guy who just started he got to -blam!-ing 34 just under a week. Making people grind for the max level again would be great. but if i were you id spend that etheric light to max weapons and armor you love i'm doing that to VoG and crota gear and weapons 365 timepiece and shit. What im saying is ascend all the shit you need then all the extras and when thats done by the time TTK comes out you're prepared

            • Don't save it, it will be obsolete. Bungie would be stupid to make it able to ascend things in the new expansion. People who run 34 and 35 Poe every week on 3 toons and/or go flawless Trials already have like 50 Etheric light. People would get max level the first time they logged in after the expansion.

You propose some good questions, well thought out so +1 for a post that isn't about lag, thorn, pvp, 2.0, pricing and the countless other topics of complaint.. I'd like to add some thoughts if i may. Firstly another thread had a very good theroy on the topic of light lvls we could be expecting. The formula is as follows 10 per subclass total base lvl of 20 + 10 light lvl and then 2 light for each dlc. I would agree that with TTK base will be raised by 10 making base 30 and so with current light lvl it will initially be 44 with a cap of 46-48 depending on how big the TTK is if it is the same size as both dlc combined i believe it will be at 48 Ascending material if Bungie continue the current trend and i see no reason for them to change it, there will be a new economy at every interval so as you thought etheric light will have little use in the new expansion i would assume that y1 stuff will have some use initially but will become dated very quickly and likely won't be items we can upgrade to the new caps To support this theroy Bungie have stated that our vault space will not be recieveing an increase and that quote:players will have to make some tough decisions. This statement leads me to believe that both weapons and gear will likely become obsolete very quickly or alternatively only certain individual pieces will be able to be upgraded ect.. I have had a personal theroy on the topic for some time, i believe that all exotics will roll over but i think to insure continued interest from player base and to insure the relevance of content, all current weapons and gear wont be something we can ascend.. Basically it falls to an issue of power creep. Items need to stay useful to a point but eventually need to be left behind or swapped out for more relevant ones. Obviously there are a number of problematic ones we know of such as final round snipers, felwinters ect the question is how does Bungie tackle that problem? removing them isn't an option, so the only way to get rid of them is to make them irrelevant by way of power creep. over time they slowly become less and less useful to a point where they are simply outclassed but something new same can be said for gear but gear is less of an issue as we all swap gear constantly, weapons are a little more difficult.. Anyway just some of my thoughts on the matter. Honestly i wouldn't be surprised if on release day we onbox it to discover Fatebringer will be put back on the shelf..

              • They'll have something to replace Etheric Light. Take engrams for example, with every expansion the engrams people collected all turned into items appropriate to the level of the previous expansion. Use as many as you need right now. If anything they'll introduce a currency exchange for Etheric Light in TTK, as they have done with the other materials.

              • It's pointless to speculate about how gear will be leveled in ttk until Bungie tells us. That being said we can assume at least that etheric light will not bring gear up to the new cap because of the language on the item card and because that would be stupid. Still I wouldn't throw anything away because you might get something for it

              • Yes save them. You won't be able to use them on new weapons, however, Bungie always accounts for this and makes them worth something. Discard then now, you get nothing. Discard them when TTK comes out and they could be worth XP or something.

              • Etheric light says that it levels up your gear to the highest available in year one. Im guessing they'll have another way for us to level our gear to the new cap.

              • They will most likely be useless since the taken king with have a different method of ascending weapons and armor to year 2 status. If you save them they will most likely be available to trade for different materials. Spend em while you can bro

                • I've been wondering the same, I have a thought on the guns. As you rightly said, the guns seem to have a light level attached to them, now, the Red bull quest item you receive for claiming a code is called "focused light" I'm thinking this is what's used to level up weapons. Obviously we will be able to source focused light in game, I think it's tied into the new patrols and public events that take place on the dreadnought. Or, maybe we use motes?
