Well you have the liberal media saying race is an issue, and the conservative media saying its not. That alone is enough to polarize people, as you can pick the side you want. Why is this happening? It's simple. Elections are coming up, and there's big stuff in the works in Washington like the TPP that big business really doesn't want you giving your opinion to your representatives on. The major media CEOs and owners pushes the candidates that will serve them best with lots of air time (Trump and Hillary) and down play anyone who threatens the chokehold they have on the government. So the less you know the better in their minds. People too busy fighting amongst themselves are too busy seeing their government being secured by the rich and powerful and their economy being -blam!- with "free trade agreements." Distract, divide, conquer.
