Elitism is a heavily stigmatized ideology in the gaming community and due to the heavy prominence of condescending and insulting behaviors, people tend to avoid those who take gaming seriously. Now, as many know, I self describe as an elitist. I don't believe in carrying bad players or playing with them for the matter and my friends often take offense to it or think I'm a douche. However, the concept that many fail to grasp is that gaming is not just a hobby for some people. It's a daily ritual or a major part of his/her life. This could be because of many reasons from psychological and/or physical incapabilities and may pertain with limited social skills. Now, some elitists are genuinely just rude. I'm not speaking for the more extreme ones who literally harass casuals or bad players, which I unfortunately have done on several occasions, I'm speaking for the softer ones who just want to play with people of their caliber and demand harder content. Before I end this drawn out post, here are some good reasons why Elitism isn't as bad as you might think:
1. Elitists just want to play with good players: We're not usually as open to carrying as others and we find low skilled players incredibly annoying. We don't hate them per say, we just want to get things done with people with our level of skill and dedication without the immensely annoying screw ups. Think of like this: if you have a bad player and a good player, why would you pick the former over the latter?
2. We're usually the ones who get you your strategies: This isn't every awesome player, but elitists like Datto are the ones who discover the best strategies for Destiny, WOW, COD etc. It's near impossible being world's first for completing a level or publishing the best strategy for an incredibly difficult boss.
3. Not all of us are dicks: Not all elitists are socially incompetent teenagers. Some of us just value our games very highly and don't want people ruining our only fun time. Gaming, although a hobby for most, is the blood and lifeline for others.
-
You claim to not understand why people hate elitists and then go on to basically explain how you are a dick and even your friends think so. You have basically answered your own question.
-
You're not an elitist, you're just a good player who also happens to be a dick. Carry on.
-
I think of myself as an elitist and I always thought it was because I like to play my games to the completion. As for the skill gap yea underskilled people are annoying but isnt it our job to help make them better, not belittle them.
-
I definitely just want to throw in there that the people calling us "elitists" are scrublets. First off I have over 3500 in grimoire, 3555 to be exact, and I've been playing since Day one through all of this bullshit with this game. I play a few hours a day and work full-time but what makes me an "elitist" is the fact that I don't carry people and I don't interact with people whose guardians look basic. But can you blame me? Most people who play stop playing between the add-ons and then come back expecting to be helped with all their stuff but when they leave and we stay and keep on then how are you helping? Secondly, there was a time when heavy ammo was scarce and raids were in high demand which makes everyone run you do important, why should we have to burn all our synthesis to do DPS because in all reality you're being carried and now your job is to not die or just distract enemies. Finally, I have over 1500 hours gameplay. 1500. I've been through raids that lasted 6-8 hours just trying beat atheon or crota, this means that I've taken time to understand and learn to play the game, you think because you have 130 hours in you should have gallarhorn? No you should play more so you can learn all the strategies and get rewarded for it. The idea of the game is to 'Become Legend' last time I checked, just because you can buy armor doesn't mean that it's gonna have good stats. There's a reason that when people see my guardian (amongst other elites) before I even land in tower they just spam with invites. Scrubs and casuals may call us elitists or whatever for not being nice, but we have every right. None of them helped us become what we are, and I sure as hell was not anyone who needed a sherpa or raid team or cheese strategy. If you're a scrublet or casual in all honesty and respectively, you have no right to speak to us about not playing for you nor do you have the right to call us "elitists". We're veterans to you kinderguardians.

Edited by Psyntifik: 6/30/2015 4:37:12 PMNone of those points come to mind when I think of a gaming elitist. In other words, that isn't what I consider elitist. The first is just skill matching. Some people like to help, some people don't. Some people like to play against a similar skill level, others don't care. The second point... Well that's just you acting like you should be worshipped and without you the entire game would crumble. "Oh cool! Someone already worked it out!" is about as far as my thought process goes with that. Some people are dicks, some people aren't. Every competitive player I've watched, heard of or spoken to seems pretty down to earth. I think you're confusing elitists with skilled trolls here. "Ruining our only fun time" C'mon, I'm sure you'll get over it. Elitism exists pretty much everywhere. And you have to be a dick to be an elitist. The moment you look down on someone and mock them for not being as good as you is the moment you become an elitist, and that is a dick move. That goes for everything. It's pretty prominent in the biking scene where I live.

I know what its like to play with sub par players. I ALWAYS get the lesser stacked team and am expected to carry a victory. Sometimes I go negative trying my heart out. Shit, look at my KD it's barely positive and it's usually 2+ on every other fps I play. Difference between you and I: I don't flee when shit gets tough. Stick around for your friends, it's just a game. Have fun. Your friends are all you have. Does it suck only having like 1 or 2 good pvp players sticking around because the rest are too "elitist" to hang around your friends? Yeah, but -blam!- those guys. Guys like me will continue to try and lead these scrubs to their rare victories. Why? Because have you ever made a retarded kid smile? It's practically the same thing, it's cute as -blam!-. Now go out there and make some retards smile, they can't all fit on my team.
-
Wouldn't it make you more "elite" if you could complete most objectives regardless of teammate quality. I've met plenty of players like that. Obviously there are some events where player quality matters more(ToO) but, if a couple people in the group have never done Crota and you fail, maybe you should explain better rather then complain. If you ostracize some of your friends because they are not skilled enough, then you are a douche.
-
Well.................... If you go solo matchmaking then its your own fault, find a fixed group of similar skilled players and run with that. If you go solo and then match up with players beneath your skilllevel, then that is your problem, not theirs.
-
No excuse for being rude, though. Nothing wrong with wanting a challenge, or wanting to play with good players, just why can't people be nicer about it?
-
Im not some super gamer who takes it serious. I play to relax not to "compete" while living in a basement like a lazy FF.
-
I understand, but that doesn't give you guys an all access pass to be dicks. Not all of you are, but I've yet to meet one who isn't.
-
Elite gamers, like elite people in the REAL world, should be able to get the job done with randoms. That's what makes you elite.
-
I'd pick the bad player if they were more chill and less of a prick who puts people down because of their skill level. I've never had an elitist put me down because it normally is opposite, but I just say good game. It's those who take gaming seriously and are actual GAMERS that help other GAMERS no matter what skill. Elitist a are fakes, and not a true gamer. Argue with me, and you'll just be arguing facts. Putting people down, that's childish, and just shows that you aren't a gamer. That's all I needed to say.
-
This pretty much sums up how I play league of legends, any other game I'm a loner because I'd rather play on my own than have to deal with people, League I have to play with others and watching stupid mistakes annoys me, like a single player thinking they can take a team solo, yes it happens but usually because of good positioning and knowing each champion inside out, makes me glad that I prefer to solo run games rather than play with others who are either going to mess up a plan or just troll
-
Brace yourselves: MLG is coming On serious note: elitist do need private lobbies so they can play against each other

Edited by About 7 fish: 6/30/2015 3:06:19 AMAmen. Elitism may be obnoxious to those who do not care to be as best as they can be, but to those who do wish to tap into their potential, it is the elitist who mentors you into being so. Sure, not everyone will appreciate that. Sure, some will even hate you for it. But make no apology for encouraging the style of play which you believe to be superior, because the casual will be unconsciously doing the same by encouraging others not to take games so seriously.

Edited by Gomly1980: 6/30/2015 4:46:01 PMSome of what you describe isn't an elitist. Some of what you described are good players. Elitist are those that think they are special snowflakes and are under the misguided impression they are on a higher level than everyone else. Elitists wouldn't make guides or help other people. Elitists, in short, are dicks.
We're not usually as open to carrying as others and we find low skilled players incredibly annoying.
That's about the only thing you got right about elitists. The part you are missing is they aren't all good players. Most of them just have an over inflated ego and "think" they are good.

If i had a dollar for ever good opinion you had I'd be broke
-
Also, people can play HOWEVER THEY WANT!

Elitest =/= Good skills

I'll put you down in any game, scrub

Edited by ReignofSpartain: 6/30/2015 1:20:48 AMI just don't like when a sequel caters to the casual fanbases is that too hard to agree with, you can be a hardcore fan of something but they don't appease to those who value the series the most, instead only focus on spreading as many consumers as they can to a general audience. Oh and mther faker it's always the people "I'm good" or "I'm pro" when nobody asks.. Those are always the worst players. I'm ok with playin with noobs in any game but MOBAS where they feed the enemy team. I've gotten 32 kills 2 deaths one time and still lost because I was the only one getting kills and doing all the work. Not fair man :(. After that I bought witcher 3
