The last time a game was out of stock for me was 1999. People who say "just put $5 down hur durr" are just goons thinking they're being clever.
Preordering is unnecessary in this day and age, and allows developers to be lazy or cut content at will, just to be sold later. Stop -blam!-ing preordering for some useless junk you think will make you a special snowflake in-game, your copy of the game will still be there even if you don't preorder.
The only times preorders are warranted is either when you're preordering a Collector's Edition, or in the very rare circumstance when you're absolutely, positively 110% sure that you are going to purchase the sequel, because the first installment of the series was so insanely good.

Paragraph 1&2... -blam!- pre orders! Paragraph 3... Completely explained why pre-orders ARE a necessity in this day & age! Do you think I'm gonna be there at midnight Nov 9 & not get a pipboy??
-
Collector's Editions are in very limited supply, and half (give or take) are going to people who relist them on eBay anyway. I only mention the 2nd scenario to give people some leeway because there are certain circumstances such as a persons financial situation at the moment. Someone may have the funds to make a personal purchase now, whereas down the line a month or two they'll be budgeting themselves very strictly. This is a fairly common thing for a lot of people, which is why some purchase are paid up front rather than installments. Despite this I'm still adamantly against preordering as I feel it's mostly bad for the industry.

Yeah I got burned soooo many times for getting game based on the trust I had for the developer, or the game before in the series was so great... Developers use the reviews of previous games as data these days..they can use that data to make the game better, or they can use it to make a quick easy sell..
-
That's what you get for blindly buying products based on a name and not the product
-
That's contradictory...with video games that name is the product that's all you have to go on until you actually play or review the game...that's why preordering is a bad idea... keep trying though you're bound to be right sooner or later big guy.
-
Oh is that so? There is no game play footage or beta? Usually there is so you're wrong
-
Yeah cause footage of a game tells you all you need to know...and a beta is nice but you still don't know how content is going to be released or how much or if the bugs in the beta are going to be fixed by launch... Publishers like to get that pre-order in for the beta too to try and lock you in.. which is another point..why do you think they emphasis so much on giving you free stuff just for ordering a game before everyone else? Cause they are being nice? Keep trying...Ha!
-
Have fun with your pessimistic attitude I guess, I'll just pre order every game I want and return them if I don't like them. Good luck with your failed crusade against pre orders though and your baseless and downright false claims lol
-
I agree. Even if you are 110% sure you're going to love it...just wait. It's okay. People will still get a copy :)
-
Exactly. Some of the best things in life are worth waiting for.

I preorder so it's downloaded before release.
