Deej, Gear Ascension is mandatory
Just watched the little IGN chat video, Deej...
How am I supposed to become a legend if I don't have a trademark weapon that becomes legendary with me?
"Being married to the same gun for 10 years sounds boring" is YOUR opinion... Some of us like the idea of having a signature weapon, and some of us, myself included, don't like where the art is going on the new weapons and armor or hate enemy-themed gear like The Dark Below kit.
If you make the new weapons and armor solid contenders, people will naturally want to acquire them, rather than being forced to by numbers... And denying a play-style because [i]You[/i] think it is boring is wrong.
The real reason the ascension system is mandatory, however, is because this isn't an MMORPG! In a standard MMO, your combat is derived from your class and augmented by the numbers provided by gear. Sure some swords might swing faster or slower, but autoattack is like 2% of your DPS and combat.
This is a shooter with live, twitch firearms... Every single one of which runs a little differently than the next. When a player finds a "favorite" gun, it isn't just his favorite [i]looking[/i] weapon, it is his favorite [i]running[/i] weapon.
I have run a custom tuned 1911 pistol in competition for almost 12 years now... Are there better modded guns out now?
Yes
Are there a lot of newer guns I have liked and have added to my collections and ran?
Yes
But the bottom line is I cannot run any gun as fast or as hard as that 1911. It has been tuned to my preferences and trained with until it is an extension of my hands, so that's the gun that I drive in matches that count... Just like Fatebringer drivers in Destiny (Or in my case Timepiece and Grim Citizen)
You cant treat Destiny like an MMO because it simply isn't one.
I would actually like an answer about plans for long term ascension, because I am done tomorrow if all my work acquiring, leveling and customizing my characters is gonna be moot in 3 months... I was done before until you announced Etheric Light.

16 RepliesIt's pretty standard in rpgs especially persistent ones that will last more than a few years that old gear will make way for the new. I don't see how this is a surprise to anyone.

I've said for a long time now the there should be a way to upgrade all your legendary and exotics to continuing new stats without having to grind or do end content for them. Bungie are the ones that keep making my weapons I love obsolete not me. So why do we have to change weapons or do pathetic grind just to make the weapons we love to use worthwhile. Everything should evolve with the game. In real life you can mod your weapons to become better or suit what you need them to be why not in the game. Bungie let us decide what weapons we want to use not you telling us ( sorry you can keep your weapons but they just wont be useful any more. So use our new weapons. And you won't get anything useful from them if you disassemble them either. So screw you) Sorry I went on a bit of a rant there but sick of them making us play the game there way only.

2 RepliesWell ok yeah you know you are the only person I have seen going on about this topic and has had an actually decent reasoning as to why ascension should be in ttk, even though I'm actually fully behind the necessity of leaving behind old guns a signature weapon actually sound like it would be pretty awesome and definitely something unique too, well unless everyone just decides to go with fb, voc and gjally that is.... What you think?

Ita actually a make or break moment this for me. I've said many times, like you yourself, how can you be legend if you're gonna get reset to a new "vanilla" every major dlc. For the first time ever there is variety in how everyone looks, it's great going to crucible and seeing a.competely different team. Plus we have our favourite weapons, screw the exotics I use more legendaries over exotics. I want to keep my supremacy that is the gun that will be with me till the end of destiny. Sure they want us to use the new stuff well I am using almost all HoW gear, new stuff will always be adopted but old favourites will run true. I think it's their way of starting a new balance amongst weapons if the rumour is true but that is a sad cop out. Had this been a real mmo like wow then Id expect to leave stuff but it isnt, thus it should stick with it's precedent and allow acension. Heck I'd be happy if they restricted how much you could ascend but to outright remove something they have just incorporated?? Well i think I'll be quitting if it happens

1 ReplyHere's my question for you. The entire game is structured around dismantling gear as you level up so why is it now an issue? I've seen people compare it to an MMO and then people come back and say that we're more tied to guns in this game than in an MMO which is cool and I'm not saying that's wrong or correct, I'm just curious as to why it was fine to drop that blue pulse rifle that was used for a good amount of time but then we found something better and got rid of it, but now when they're bring more powerful guns in making the old ones obsolete that becomes an issue? Like I said, not saying one side is right over another, just wondering.

4 RepliesAfter The Dark Below, when we complained about having to level our Exotics again, and that our Legendaries would become obsolete, which was unacceptable, Bungie stated that they heard us. Keep that in mind. In the House of Wolves, they not only made ascending Exotics much easier, but they also put a reasonable system in place to ascend all of our Legendary gear. They DID hear us. Now, with the Taken King, here we are worried that they are once again going to strip us of our gear... Gear for which we have spent many hours grinding... Gear that we have ascended, sometimes twice. If this is true, they need to hear us again. I'm not starting over each year. That's not progression. That's a new game, and if that's the case, I'll find others to play.

They FINALLY implement a system that allows our weapons to be a little more personalized AND brought up to current damage/ATK values... and then they're gonna take it away? I just can't see them doing this... not only would make the vanillla and previous DLCs irrelevant for the people who purchase the TTK Collector's Edition, but it would alienate a LARGE section of their player base. Why would people ever go back into VoG or Crota's End Raids if the weapons and armor become COMPLETELY OBSOLETE (again). It would be a GIANT step backwards. Guess we have to just wait and see.

Making our gear obsolete will kill the whole point in grinding in this game.Whats the point of grinding for the new stuff when they'll just end up being obsolete in the future?

What's the point of trying to get any gun now really anything new I get from drops or from nightfalls I can just rebuy or reforge. Anything new I get gets dismantled with the exception of only a few. If we can't keep our old guns and have to use shitty new ones then what's the point right? Why did we spend all that time redoing VOG for the fatebringer, plateorian foil, just for it to be trash in a few months. No vault and no good new weapons is pathetic. Best thing they did in HoW is allow is to upgrade things we actually wanted to keep (gear, guns)

2 RepliesYear one weapons won't be a feasible option to keep because Bungie still doesn't want to increase vault space simple as that. So what is their fix? Create a whole new max damage and make old weapons useless by taking away ascension, a shitty fix to a larger problem I think.
