Deej, Gear Ascension is mandatory

Just watched the little IGN chat video, Deej... How am I supposed to become a legend if I don't have a trademark weapon that becomes legendary with me? "Being married to the same gun for 10 years sounds boring" is YOUR opinion... Some of us like the idea of having a signature weapon, and some of us, myself included, don't like where the art is going on the new weapons and armor or hate enemy-themed gear like The Dark Below kit. If you make the new weapons and armor solid contenders, people will naturally want to acquire them, rather than being forced to by numbers... And denying a play-style because [i]You[/i] think it is boring is wrong. The real reason the ascension system is mandatory, however, is because this isn't an MMORPG! In a standard MMO, your combat is derived from your class and augmented by the numbers provided by gear. Sure some swords might swing faster or slower, but autoattack is like 2% of your DPS and combat. This is a shooter with live, twitch firearms... Every single one of which runs a little differently than the next. When a player finds a "favorite" gun, it isn't just his favorite [i]looking[/i] weapon, it is his favorite [i]running[/i] weapon. I have run a custom tuned 1911 pistol in competition for almost 12 years now... Are there better modded guns out now? Yes Are there a lot of newer guns I have liked and have added to my collections and ran? Yes But the bottom line is I cannot run any gun as fast or as hard as that 1911. It has been tuned to my preferences and trained with until it is an extension of my hands, so that's the gun that I drive in matches that count... Just like Fatebringer drivers in Destiny (Or in my case Timepiece and Grim Citizen) You cant treat Destiny like an MMO because it simply isn't one. I would actually like an answer about plans for long term ascension, because I am done tomorrow if all my work acquiring, leveling and customizing my characters is gonna be moot in 3 months...   • It's become unnecessarily essential to collect EVERYTHING. Reason being that one patch Buffs something, Nerfs another. Then the following patch does the complete opposite. That shows Bungie's inexperience as a AAA developer. By no means should a realistic Handcannon have tremendous range, but this is a sci-fi game after all and whatever doesn't make sense, usually does. That being said, I expected a lot more variety in weapon creation and balancing prior launch. However, getting back to reality, no one has the time to devote enough time to this game to grind through ridiculous quests and Raids (Necrochasm, anyone?) for 10 long, monotonous years. I WANT Bungie to motivate me to come back to playing this game because of a good story, deep weapon customization, while offering tough, but doable challenges (VoG is a perfect example). I WANT to come back in another year and pick up where I left off with the weapons I have. So far, I am not seeing a viable reason to play beyond Year One regardless of said promises that have a track record of falling short (e.g. last two expansions). Destiny's consecutive expansions may appeal to the pre-pubescent masses out to measure their phallic size while ravaging their parent's wallets. But for adult players who almost always see their own true "assessment of value" will see the lame cash grab for what it truly is. Destiny is a year old car with a lot of miles, buggy new parts, and a new paint job. Sorry, not interested.

    Agreed. What set Destiny apart was, it tried to marry a Shooter an MMO and a RPG all in one. So falling back on "Warcraft does it," doesn't really fit. What made ascension cool was that it gave people Options. The only reason more people didn't switch weapons, is because the prison of Elders weapons sucked, and they only added 3 exotics. All of which are cool, but none of which are primary / workhorse weapons that you can rely on. And Trials Of Osiris, a lot of ppl just don't enjoy PvP. And others were turned off by the cheating, lag, etc, to where grinding to 9-0 for weapons with elemental dmg was not worth it. Side note: Making blue and greens better than previous Raid weapons is a horrible idea to me. I also saw that fatebringers mag is being nerfed to 10 mag. Yeah the "weapon balance." But its a raid weapon. And the need for balancing had nothing to do with mag size anyway. Anyway, Even with the new infusion of gear there will be standouts that rise to the top. I much rather see a big diversity of guns people are using, between new and old. And with the new leveling system, all different combinations of armor, new and old. So that everyone is unique. Deej claims people just using fatebringer for 10 years is like this big problem of stagnation. But, in the outset, they said it was about becoming legend, and having gear and weapons that you become legendary with. Its like any hero character has his or her weapon of choice. Even if they use something else for the moment, there's always "old faithful." Not to mention the vault space issue.... keeping around weapons that are not advancing, just to have them... Mmmm... We dont exactly have collector size vaults for that... If you collect exotics, you basically can only keep legendaries that have the power and stats to make them viable. Just using them in the old raid and crucible (which alot of us are PvE only), is kind of a lame thing to say. It's like when Microsoft told people, if you arent happy with these new Xbox One DRM features then go buy a 360... Uhhh no, fix your system and listen to the feedback. Alot of the youtube personalities, most of the big ones, are all singing the same song, "I'm happy to try out new stuff." Yeah but that doesn't negate those peoples opinion who want even MORE options. All the old, AND all the New. Just because you introduce me to Thai food and I love it, doesn't mean I want to give up Italian food. I love both. I want both readily available, viably. Not to mention it's kind of a bad look to give people what they ask for, then take it away. And they shouldn't even mention etheric light being "hard" to get for some lol. That is the issue of the in game economy. Has absolutely no bearing on the weaponry itself lol.

        Bump all day! Many hours I've spent collecting awesome armor and weapons; they are fools if they think every player out there wants to reset every year and delete everything they've previously acquired to make space for new. I love this game and I enjoy collecting all that the game has to offer, and I would love to continue collecting new gear, as long as all of my preexisting loot remains relevant. This game has so much potential and I'm afraid that whoever is pulling the strings, will successfully force Destiny into extinction.

      • I completely agree, give us something that pulls us away from our favorite weapon and makes us want to use it. Not kill the weapon (nerf auto rifles to force people to use pulse rifles) learn from earlier mistakes bungie.

      • I remember when they were telling us about destiny and how you can play it like you want. Then they made autos useless because people weren't playing with other weapons. And now they telling us to ditch weapons we spent hours upon hours getting. DeeJ doesn't even have a lv 34 he is only lv 32 and probably got that far from a assistant or PR guy/gal doing that for him. So to have a prick who doesn't even play a game he is supposed to represent makes his thoughts and feelings on how I want to play totally bull shit.

        • Bump.I don't see what's wrong with keeping our old gear especially if they're good.I also feel that making VOG and Crota weapons obsolete will also hurt new players since they won't have any reason to run the old raids.

Most of the arguments in [i]support[/i] of phasing out Year 1 gear completely ignore it. You can't apply MMO "expansion" standards to a game that [i]isn't an MMO[/i].

            • It's pretty standard in rpgs especially persistent ones that will last more than a few years that old gear will make way for the new. I don't see how this is a surprise to anyone.
