Deej, Gear Ascension is mandatory
Just watched the little IGN chat video, Deej...
How am I supposed to become a legend if I don't have a trademark weapon that becomes legendary with me?
"Being married to the same gun for 10 years sounds boring" is YOUR opinion... Some of us like the idea of having a signature weapon, and some of us, myself included, don't like where the art is going on the new weapons and armor or hate enemy-themed gear like The Dark Below kit.
If you make the new weapons and armor solid contenders, people will naturally want to acquire them, rather than being forced to by numbers... And denying a play-style because [i]You[/i] think it is boring is wrong.
The real reason the ascension system is mandatory, however, is because this isn't an MMORPG! In a standard MMO, your combat is derived from your class and augmented by the numbers provided by gear. Sure some swords might swing faster or slower, but autoattack is like 2% of your DPS and combat.
This is a shooter with live, twitch firearms... Every single one of which runs a little differently than the next. When a player finds a "favorite" gun, it isn't just his favorite [i]looking[/i] weapon, it is his favorite [i]running[/i] weapon.
I have run a custom tuned 1911 pistol in competition for almost 12 years now... Are there better modded guns out now?
Yes
Are there a lot of newer guns I have liked and have added to my collections and ran?
Yes
But the bottom line is I cannot run any gun as fast or as hard as that 1911. It has been tuned to my preferences and trained with until it is an extension of my hands, so that's the gun that I drive in matches that count... Just like Fatebringer drivers in Destiny (Or in my case Timepiece and Grim Citizen)
You cant treat Destiny like an MMO because it simply isn't one.
I would actually like an answer about plans for long term ascension, because I am done tomorrow if all my work acquiring, leveling and customizing my characters is gonna be moot in 3 months... I was done before until you announced Etheric Light.

Bump!! I kept my fist legendary weapon which is crap but holds a special place in my heart.. The badger ccl.. But it was my ONLY primary legendary for about 3 weeks and got me right up to max TDB light level. I would hate BUNGIE so much if they decide to make year 1 weapons obsolete as a blatant remedy for not bothering to increase vault space!! Again the existing community get ass rammed by bungie.

3 RepliesHonestly I can't tell if DeeJ is an idiot or just a liar. But I never get tired of watching him completely dodge the most important part of a question. The reason that fatebringer was so popular throughout all of TDB, despite being underpowered with only 300 attack was that no primary weapon with 331 attack could even begin to compare to its incredible perk set. The reason we're all ready to weld our ghorns to our heavy ammo slot, forsaking all other exotics, is that nothing can output as much damage quickly, and more importantly we know nothing will ever be that powerful again. I think that many players wouldn't worry as much about constantly ascending the oldest gear in the game if we weren't all sure that it would probably stay the most powerful. If Dark Below and House of Wolves hadn't convinced us that it's all subpar gimmick perks from here on out. They can eventually force us to give up old weapons. Make the new attack cap 1200 and not even ghorn will compete with a standard no frills rocket launcher. But I won't feel more powerful. I'll just feel like bungie has nerfed me out of pique Bungie: put in a high impact high rof full auto scout rifle with field scout and firefly that does elemental damage. I'll leave fatebringer behind forever. You know what always sticks with me from the launch of TDB? Going from the devil you know to the devil you don't. One of the best PvE hand cannons being available for marks to one of the worst. As long as that's your trend bungie, I'd rather just keep ascending.

6 RepliesYes. Year 1 gear ascension should be mandatory. Granted, Deej never actually said that we can't ascend our current gear. However, the marriage comment kinda hints at that. It would definitely turn off a lot of the current playerbase if we can't keep on using our tried and true year 1 guns. My Messenger (Adapt) has completely replaced whatever else I had for my go-to primary. Knowing that my favorite gun will be obsolete in three months would probably kill some of the desire that I have to play this game.

Bump this. New weapons are cool, but why bring up all of our current weapons to max Stat if they are just gonna be obsolete again in ttk.

I have two HKs and I lust after my brother's 1911 every time I go shooting. There are equals (USP) but nothing better has been made in over 100 years and I love that you bring this real world masterpiece into this conversation. Maybe etheric light will save destiny, but as of the Crouton disk locked content I was shocked that my Devil You Know, Fatebringer, Corrective Measure and Shadow Price seemed to be getting left behind. And a super agree with the art work on the armor kits. As a gun competitor I'm sure you realize that smooth, clean edges are key to much of what makes good gear when moving and shooting. I was Army and I cringe at some of the designs with crap hanging off the guns and spikes, horns and any number of other levers and hang-ups sticking out of the armor. I want to look like Cabal if I had to pick one, just rounded off edges, thick plates and a chest rig brimming with goodies (yay Armamentarium!). Bungie needs to take a long hard look at the real world and understand a few things about guns and armor before they make anymore mistakes. And ultimately the idea to have your armor determine your level is a bad one as it does nothing for the long term player and makes every noob our equal in just a few weeks. I suppose the idea is to reward the newest players, but this is the same kind of mentality as looking at just the profits in the next quarter rather than making sure a company will be around in twenty or fifty years serve its customers and not just the shareholders who need a new yacht every year or two. Same goes for the weapons. If I want to use Thorn or Fatebringer or Shadow Price or Invective or Multi Tool or whatever almost exclusively the damage I do with it should evolve along with my character - at least if I made the game. caps lock pimp bump with 2 exclamation - BIMP!!
