The death penalty discourages as much crime as gun control keeps guns out of the hands of criminals.
If you need threat of your own death to prevent you from committing murder, I question your morality and sanity.

Edited by illqo : 7/19/2015 2:42:00 AMLosing something important deters crime. Be it social strata, income, family connections, belongings, etc. Only the fact that if you are caught, that you will lose something is what in the end prevents total chaos. A saint might steal, if he knew he wouldn't be caught or if there were no consequence,it's just human nature, we in the end are opportunist. Taking every advantage, breaking every rule is just within our nature. Losing what we have gained is the only real way of preventing it. We have begun to tear down the walls of society to demand all should have the same, in return people have begun to see social standing as a nothing, for it can be lost so fast. We have pushed great barriers before success while building props to keep people from hitting the bottom, wealth is losing its purpose, and so we give it no value for to gain or lose it all is becoming impossible. People are being told not to take pride in their past, their history, their family because past transgressions of them, they blame their ancestors or parents for the problems of today and thus separate themselves, why care for family if others decide for you that they have no value. Last of all our belongings, for to long we lived in a world where what you owned defined what you are, now we are told that what we own is disgusting by this group or that and because of this we decide our belongings have no value. A man with nothing to lose is a dangerous man indeed. So we threaten his life, his last and final belonging, because perhaps this will have some value. Remember even a saint might steal if there were no consequence. Murder is wrong, but I world where even life has begun to be cheap. What other recourse do we have?

Edited by tjustie: 7/19/2015 2:17:16 AMI would think that if any crime got the death penalty, the crime rates would be very low. Not saying that would be a good thing to have, but I can see it working. The second point is completely irrelevant. Edit: Old post that I already commented on apparently. Lel.

Lol that's the point of the death penalty. There are crazy people out there and that might be the thing stopping them

Death penalty sounds fine to me, we've got too many 3 felony minorities shitting up our prisons.

How are the crime rates in Singapore?

$0.15 cartridge costs less than 3 squares and a roof 'til they shuffle off their mortal coil. Not that the death penalty is morally right, or that we do it that cheap (don't usually use bullets now).
