Swarm Grenade Issue Settled

The biggest issue in terms of recent events in Destiny's PvP game system is the (assumed) oversight in coding that is the swarm grenade. People have been using this glitch to fill their supers in the early seconds of online play by using a perk that increases super energy on grenade grenade kills. This post is a piece-by-piece breakdown of the issue. If you wish to contribute facts or valid counterarguments, do so in the comments, and be respectful. I'm not reading any posts that tell me to get good, because I can almost guarantee that no one here has soloed the Four Kings on NG+4 with a dex/faith build. Here we go: What is this Swarm Grenade glitch? If you are truly out of tune with the goings-on of Destiny, there is a current oversight in game coding that ultimately allows hunters running Swarm grenades with armor that has the Ashes to Asset perk to instantly fill their super. By definition, this is not a glitch. Rather, this is an unintended oversight, most likely in the coding of the hunter's swarm grenades. The perks count towards the issue, but are not the underlying cause of it. Is this form of play bannable? I understand that, like many things in this unbalanced game, this issue is purely an oversight. The issue, when performed properly, gives the user an unfair advantage in competitive play, and in intensive games like Trials of Osiris, where you can't afford to lose, it can be defined as such. Regardless of interpretation, the abuse of this oversight is by definition cheating. Can I be banned for using this? I can't directly answer that factually, but the answer is more than likely to be yes, as it meddles with the fairness of competitive multiplayer and is regarded as technical abuse. Bungie is always monitoring these games, so whether they decide abusing this issue is ban worthy is up to them. If DeeJ or irk were to bring this up in a Weekly update and mention that it is unintended, then abusing this oversight WILL result in a ban, especially if used in trials. Does that mean it's fair game to use until DeeJ mentions it? Of course not, you twit. You can use it, but the record of you performing the action will be documented, and may result in a ban. How do I avoid this issue if Swarm Grenades are my go-to explosive? As I've never done this before myself, all I can say is to avoid wearing the armor that contains the Ashes to Asset perk. If you can't avoid that, try the other two grenades. If you have any other concerns, post below. I hope this helps. EDIT: I will be changing the content of this post so that it will be easier to understand for people who decide to skip straight to the comments. I will also change content to correct any falsities. I'm in class right now so I'll fix it in about 3 hours.

  • "No one here has soloed the 4 kings" seriously? If your gonna brag about skill in destiny on a destiny forum, don't use some other game most of us probably never played as reference. Have you soloed crota on hard? No? Didn't think so :P BTW I have had no problem with swarm grenades in ToO - it's a horrible trials map this week (personally) but you have to be stupid to walk through a swarm grenade without noticing it's there - also they are slow & easy to Dodge even if you get pegged in the face with the initial throw

      • It's not a banable offense. It isn't the players fault that the perk doesn't work. If they don't ban for crota network manipulation then they won't for this. And crota was cheating. Pushing the Templar was cheating. This is something you can't be banned for

          • Um it is a glitch. Ashes to assets says "kills with grenade give you super" not " hits with grenade give you super energy"

          • Even if they brought it up, it is still possible for someone with no participation in the community to know that it work and abuse it. I agree they should patch it, but bungie wouldnt ban people for using it just as much as they wouldn't ban someone for using final round on a sniper or using shotpackage/hammer forged on a shotgun. Or using thorn at all. It's a broken pvp mechanic just like the aforementioned and should be fixed/not punished.

            • What if I like to play as a Hunter, and just happen to like using swarm grenades? My helmet that I have leveled up just happens to have that perk? What about these people? "Ban able Offense"? Far -blam!-ing from it. Bungie will not punish people for their mistakes, and just because you see a Hunter with swarm grenades doesn't mean they are knowingly cheating. They will fix the grenade issue in the next update. Until then, get over it

            • Its not the players responsibility to change their playstyle because of a programming error that hasnt even been acknowledged by bungie. If someone wants to use that armor and they prefer swarm grenades they shouldnt have to change their playstyle when its not their fault. im sure there are a number of players out there that dont even realize its happening. No ones gonna get banned for it

            • Nobody will ever be banned for using this! It's the same as all the raid bugs and will eventually be fixed. You stringing words together to make yourself sound intelligent or you know what you are talking about is quite simply a joke. I say again, NOONE will EVER be banned for using this!

No one is going to get banned for this before it is at least addressed by Bungie, because with as common as the Ashes to Assets perk is, it would be impossible for them to prove that people knew that they were using a exploit. Less than 1% of the overall community actually uses this site on a regular basis, and up until reading this a few days ago, I was completely unaware that this was even a thing. This has allegedly been around since day 1. Honestly, now that it's been brought to light, I actually feel a little better knowing that this is how people were getting their supers so quickly in Trials, as opposed to someone actually cheating by manipulating the game in some way. I actually thought that the seemingly endless wave of late 1st / early 2nd round golden guns were a result of people using some type of mod.

            • The line between game-as-intended and game-as-unintended (cheese'd) is a muddy one. The difference between cheese'd and cheated is far clearer. Was it cheating when the vex ruled crucible? No, but the result was clearly unintended. Thus the impact nerf. Similarly, using shoot-to-loot to get more heavy ammo was clearly unintended, and they nerfed that. Thorn rules crucible, but no change has happened there, probably because thorn is operating as intended (the wisdom on the intention is up for debate). It is clearly cheating when someone leaves ToO to cherry pick easier enemies. DDoS attacking is also clearly cheating. These get you banned, and the ToS is clear. I agree that ashes to asset is not functioning per the wording of the perk with that grenade. It is also not cheating. I trust Bungie will evaluate and respond accordingly.

            • It it not banable, as it is more of the game's development fault rather than players. It is simply a fault in coding, rather than a cheat

              • I only use my gunslinger in pve... Strict blade dancer in pvp... So I don't benefit from saying this... And I have seen my arc blade shut down by enough golden guns to find this pretty irritating that this exists... But here's the thing, not only is this not bannable, but it isn't cheating... It's broken, and annoying, and its not fair, but imbalances in the game are the responsibility of the developer to fix and until they do, gunslingers have an advantage.... No one will be banned, bungie will address the issue, patch it eventually, things will go back to normal, but until then we have to learn to adapt, and deal with it...

                  • Think of it this way, you can't get banned for using armour and grenades. If Bungie were to ban people then they would be lying that they made a mistake. They would have to remove swarm grenades completely. Example: Little Jimmy is lvl 33 but can only achieve 34 if he uses the armour that has Ashes to Asset. Now little Jimmy can't aim with his grenades very well so he uses swarm grenades and he has been using them since day one. Now how would it be fair if he got banned because he was practically forced to use ashes to asset in order to achieve lvl 34? You won't get banned for this but it will be fixed. Until then, LET'S HAVE SOME FUUUN!
