You get "married" to some 1 so you both gain exp faster while together. Its more or less fusing rings together.
Though creepies actually hold in game weddings in mmos

You're complaining that there's something nerdy in a RPG? But no, it's an incentive for two friends to pick up the game so they can play together and level a little faster. There will always be people who take it too far and treat it like an online marriage. Those people have been around since the dawn of gaming though, so they're nothing new.
