What's in a number?

I’ve always been a level or two below everyone else in Destiny. I didn’t play the raids, I didn’t play much multiplayer. I was at 29 when the cap was 30, then 31 when the cap was 32. Now I’m at 33 with the 34 cap. I still don’t play much multiplayer (although I will try some IB) and the time/effort that’s needed to get the etheric light from POE is beyond my patience. BUT the point is that I understand the grind to get to this elusive high level, the best of the best so to speak. My question is why does it matter to you? If you played the game with blue armour at level 30 it would probably be hard, maybe as hard as trying to do a 34 POE when you’re 30, who knows. But we keep upgrading, getting more powerful only to be smacked back down again to then upgrade more gear to take on tougher enemies again and again. I for one just want cool looking armour. I’ve only done the 32 POE twice so far to get armour cores. Was it fun? Not really. I would much prefer a casual game of 28 POE after work some day but I needed a core for the cool looking Fallen armour so hey ho. So why do you keep playing, what is it that drives your pursuit of that top level? Just curious :)
