Halo 3 & NXE

The New Xbox Experience (NXE) launches today and with it comes a new feature that allows games to be installed to your hard drive. Unfortunately Halo 3 will load slower in this scenario and could negatively impact your online experience. Read on for details. • this problem does not apply to the xbox 360 with the Jasper board. you can run the game from the hard drive and select internal memory (Jasper has 256MB) for map cache when starting the game. game load time not really that much different, but it sure is nice not to have to hear that noisy freakin dvd player running all the time.

 • when i logged on to play XBL on the day of the nxe, when you reached the avatar selection thing, i didnt like it then, fourtunatly, things got better from there, and i like it but in the beggining i found it harder to locate your usual settings. oh well, hooray for the NXE and the new halo theme : )

 • Thanks to Mat Noguchi for clearing up what happens with Halo and the NXE. Tbh its not the hugest of differences, GTA loads like 10 seconds quicker or something so it's not exactly like it's anything major we're missing out on :P And for some Marty-love, we should be playing the Halo Soundtracks as a custom soundtrack so we drown out the console noise in his epic work! Loving the new Halo theme too :D [Edited on 11.25.2008 10:23 AM PST]

 • First off, I would like to say thank you for the tech-info. And I had a question about the slow load times in matchmaking, is there going to be a "Search for players without install", as to not have the one player with it installed, and have everyone wait for them to load the map. Thanks if anyone looks at this.

 • It's a damn shame Halo 3 can't take advantage of installing. I will say, however, that when I first installed it, the game buffered and went in game faster than normal. It also cut down on noise by a significant amount. Though I'd rather take slower loading times over a Red Ring of Death any day, it's a pain in the neck online because I found myself lagging somewhat more than normal.

 • my 360 drive has a faulty tray that needs alot of bashing to open, i cant afford to send it off for 4 weeks to repair, so i have been managing it all this time. I installed Halo 3 on the HDD, so i'm glad i dont have to remove my most played title from the drive and the lack of drive noise is very very very very much welcome. Apart from my stupid network connection, everything is loading better than before. So sorry Bungie, i like your game and its good work, but i'm not a sheep to agree with you blindly, i have to do what works best for my situation. Hopefully there will be a fix in the future. Thanks The NXE is pretty sweet too. [Edited on 11.21.2008 6:38 PM PST]

 • The NXE is amazing! I'm glad I don't have to DL H3 onto my HD :)

 • I'm disappointed to hear this, although it makes sense. A swap file + disc data being read from two separate devices simultaneously (HDD + DVD drive), would be faster than both sets of data being read from the same device (HDD only). However, I had a thought, which posed a question to which I believe some of you folks on the Bungie community might know the answer. Does the H3 swap-file space default to whatever the default storage device is? More accurately, will it write to a memory unit? I assume so, because some 360s don't come with a hard drive, only a memory unit. If my assumption is correct, then could one then load H3 from their HDD, choose the memory unit as the default storage device, and thereby the dilemma is resolved? Is my logic flawed? That would be two separate devices, assuming the 360s processor can request data from both simultaneously, as it does between the ODD and the HDD. And read/write speeds from a solid state memory unit has to be faster than from a DVD...

 • I'm having trouble here. How do you install Halo 3 to your hard drive? If anyone can answer that would be very helpful ~Banned Guy (not really banned)

 • They have this thing called an Xbox Live Arcade edition, it doesn't have a hard drive, and IIRC Halo 3 runs on that... why can't they just make it so Halo 3 thinks it's running on a unit with no HDD when it's running off of the HDD? That way it wouldn't double seek the drive, at least in theory. EDIT: I see I'm not the only one who thought of this. My bad. [Edited on 11.21.2008 5:40 AM PST]

 • Wat a joke this game is. It took me forever to find a game anyway, so now the loading screens are slower?!? I'm off to play CoD and put Halo to bed. [Edited on 11.21.2008 2:15 AM PST]

 •
Posted by: TannerRob My mates installed it and he says it runs fine, there's no load time problems like bungie have said
Yeah that is what I have observed. I actually thought the load times were significantly faster, especially on larger maps like Valhalla and Sandtrap. But then again I haven't played in a few weeks so I might have not remembered correctly. I uninstalled anyways because I only have a 20gb hard drive.

 • Why is it so hard to fix? The game doesn't use caching when the HDD isn't attached, is there any reason you can't pretend the hard drive isn't attached for that but leave it as an option for save files and DLC?

 • That's weird. I installed Halo 3 to my HDD & loading times are actually better. it used to take a few minutes to load the campaign level, "The Storm", but now it only takes 10-15 seconds. lol

 • My view: Call me selfish but I've got Halo 3 on my hard drive and it's not coming off. My 360's a Halo edition I bought second hand from a local shop minus hard drive, so I bought a 120GB HDD. The original owner must have been a complete muppet from the condition of the component cable and I want the 'Haylite' to stay alive as long as possible. A session online last night didn't seem to present longer loading times and while the console's not down to PS3 levels of sound, it's definitely a big improvement. Even so, I'm glad I came to check this out because the in-game message comes across as being a bit tongue in cheek because of the bit about friends laughing at you. Make it serious please Bungie or it's just going to cause more confusion for people who wouldn't normally come here (this is my first post so yes, stupids like me). Unless Bungie present a fix this problem's here to stay because there's probably a high percentage of (casual) players that have never visited this site before and just as many who want a quieter Xbox. At the same time though, don't pin the blame on Bungie for the issue. it's their forward-thinking approach that was caught out by a system software feature that probably wasn't even being considered during Halo's development. Halo 3 to me has always been a must-have title for 360, a quick match on it made me want one and a game collection without it is incomplete. When all's said and done it's still the same game. To sum up: If you can fix it Bungie please do, if not then it's not exactly the end of the world is it?

 • Here's what I'm wondering though. If Bungie were to make a patch, I don't think it would be too difficult. I'm almost certain that the NXE provides a boolean value to tell whether the game is on a disk, or the hard drive. So I'm thinking just a if/else statement to decide whether or not to cache the maps. I don't really know how much code that would entail (because I don't work for Bungie), but I'm just saying it seems simple in theory.

 • Well my halo disc was scratched and some of the maps didn't work on the disc so i borrowed a friends disc and put it on my hdd so i can use my scratched disc to play all the content. The loading times don't seem that much longer i haven't really noticed it.

 • Halo 3 works on 360 that don't have HDD so it can work without the cache. So knowing that I don't think it will be hard and take lot of dev time to add, at first, a small option to enable/disable the HDD cache so everyone could enjoy the game in the best conditions!

 •
Posted by: Uzzi 360 I installed it to my hard drive and the load times in the menu are quicker, although the maps might take a little longer to load in matchmaking, IDC it's my choice to play off of the HDD And that is what i'm doing, if the other players have to wait a few extra seconds so I don't have to hear my 360 disc drive (aka Air conditioner unit on High) too bad, who's gonna stop me?
Exactly what I'm saying, screw them if they don't like it.

 •
Posted by: Halo 3 X360 I don't see why this should be a problem. The DLC maps already are on the HDD, so why don't they load into cache? It is just poor programming on Bungie's part not integrating this into at least TU2 for the original maps. I installed the game to my HDD on Friday, and Standoff loaded at its normal time when I used the disc before. Maybe Bungie should actually pay attention to Microsoft when they add new features, considering that Microsoft published Halo 3 as a first party title. Bungie should have been one of the first to integrate this!
Amen to that Brother!!!

 • You know I really don't care what you people think & i don't really care if everybody else gets mad at me for uploading Halo 3 to my HDD. You see, my Xbox is MY XBOX & if I can make it quiter & last longer then I will, regardless of the load time to play Halo 3. (which is over 1 year into its 4 years shelf life) Don't get me wrong I also love to play Halo 3 & its my game of choice. Which is why I will upload it to my HDD & get a quiter ride with more mileage in the long run for my Xbox. If you don't like it then...well I really don't care what you think!!!

 • My Xbox update won't even work. When it gets to the end it fail, it told me to check my connection and it was fine. I don't know what to do because I can't connect to xbox live without it. Q: Can you also install original xbox games onto the HDD?
