I deleted what was originally here and I changed it to something a little less sarcastic.
Religion itself does not need to die out and I highly doubt that it will. What does need to die out are the extremists that give religions their bad reputation. Most religions are founded on admirable beliefs but it is only when people pervert those teachings and we get extremists. So religions can stay but extremists have got to go.

Extremism begets extremism. The religious feel the need to defend themselves. The atheists feel the need to intensify their attack. It reminds me of Abolitionist rhetoric leading to an intensification of slaveholders rhetoric

All Christians are (and always have been) nothing but peaceful and loving. /sarcasm BUT there are plenty who do use their faith to help humanity. Absolutely true. You can find extremes on either end of every group, every religion or theology.

Or we could credit monks and the Catholic Church for maintaining civilization and learning throughout the middle ages

Eh, people will use any excuse to be able to do and get what they want. Be it religion in the crusade, or racism in the Baltimore riots.

You don't have to be religious to be nice to the less fortunate.

Oh like those Christian groups that hold the food hostage until the homeless listen about God?
