Destiny and its attempt at hard.

EDIT: I have hidden the original post in a spoiler section. Now that Skola's has been changed I retract my post. I think the fight is 100x better now. Challenging yet fun, with teamwork it is rather easy if you are patient and communicate. Much better Bungie.
So this isn't quite a rant post. I just wanted to do this because I haven't seen it typed up else where, and I really hope they don't keep making content this way. So yesterday I spent allllll day doing 35 PoE. Why? Because we wanted to do it the "real" way. Not just melt him in a minute. This lead to hours, and hours, and hours of frustration until finally we just cheesed it by burning him down in a minute. This is not fun, nor is it challenging. Vault of Glass was actually hard, it required Teamwork, and experience. And after you knew how to do it, the challenge slowly lifted. Crota's End wasn't quite the same way. Sure once you got the hang of it and a good strategy it got easier. But their real "challenge" a constant 33% damage reduction. Even that was forgivable. But now PoE comes along. And to be honest, I really like it. Even this weeks 34 was a blast doing the legit way. It took teamwork and once you got the hang of it was nice and smooth. Qodron is really quite easy, there is no need to just burn him down in a minute when its far more rewarding to beat the system in place. Then we get to Skola's. Now I like this fight, I do. The thing I don't like about it is the literally ENDLESS walls of add's. Now with Solar burn on it wasn't the worst. The captains and Skola's were a bit of a threat. But it could have been beating legit (As in not burning him down in 40 seconds) . But this week was not the case. Shank's were 10x more dangerous then Skola's. Captains would 1 hit you with their melee. And a wire rifle would cut you down from across the map in 1 hit. I lost count of how many flawless run's we were having only to be picked off by a random Vandal hidden across the map. Now this may change with different modifiers but that isn't the point of this post. The point is Destiny needs to stop confusing "unbalanced and unfair" to hard. Being at a 33% damage reduction, with a room full of enemies that will 1-2 shot you is just dumb. Its a fun killer, I haven't seen a single video of someone beating this fight legit. Everyone just runs in there and burns him down as fast as they can. This fight is nothing more then a DPS check. The amazing strategy of the reverse chalice, and the mines that force you out of cover is ruined by an army of add's that kill you instantly. Maybe everyone doesn't agree with me, but if this is the trend Destiny plan's on taking for its Endgame PVE it is going to die out very quickly I believe. This just is not fun. Your option's are, kill him right away and avoid the entire fight. Or fail. Even if this wasn't Arc Burn it would be a huge chore to do every single week. TL:DR 33% Damage reduction, against endless add's that can 1 shot you is not challenging, its just broken. Bungie my question is do you really want to keep making Endgame content that people are going to gloss over and find way's around because of your broken mechanics? Or do you want to go back to making interesting, challenging, in depth raids like Vault of Glass. Sure people cheesed VoG, but it wasn't necessary at all. These day's its damn near necessary to just cheese Skola's. (Yes burning right away to avoid his mechanics I consider cheesing) I wanted endgame, not a DPS check. EDIT; Seems to be some confusion. The point of this is not to bash burning him down, when a burn is active obviously that is the best strategy. I am talking about the fight it self being unbalanced. Leave the "I got my weapon's ill use them how I want!" comments to yourself. I can guarantee killing him in 70 seconds is not what Bungie wanted and it will not always happen that way. The fight however WILL still be broken after that time. EDIT 2: Thank you for the feed back both in agreement and disagreement. Just to clarify again this is not about the strategy for burning him, it is not bashing that strategy or hating on people who do it. This article is about Destiny's attempt and making things difficult when really they just make them tedious, or in other words artificial difficulty. This isn't about "being a noob" or "gitting good" or about "cheesing" or anything like that. This is about endgame content in Destiny, which currently has been pretty lackluster and uninteresting. If you are okay with this kind of endgame there is no need to comment here, this is for people who are tired of this sad excuse for end game material.
• I know how you feel. It's so stupid that the fight requires gjallarhorn because the extra things going on in the battle just make it way too difficult.

  • As YouTuber Jloco11 said on CE: "There's a difference between difficult and challenging. If you do CE on hard rather than normal, it bumps the difficulty. If you do hard VoG compared to normal, it ups the challenge"

    • This game's idea of challenge has always been cheap. Valus Ta'aurc = Gatling Gun & Homing Gatling Gun Missiles. Every Cabal, Hive, & Vex Mission Boss/MiniBoss = Gatling Gun Rocket/Energy Launchers (Because that equals challenge.) Phogoth = Gatling Gun Energy Rockets Septiks Prime = Rocket/Energy Blasts Sekrion = Gatling Gun Energy Blasts The Black Garden/Final Bosses = Gatling Gun Energy Blasts Archon Priest = Gatling Gun Shotgun blasts. Omnigul = Gatling Gun Energy Blasts Tariks = Rapid Fire Scorch Launcher (aka: Gatling Gun Rockets) Need I go on? The game just loads bosses with Heavy Weapons that do massive direct & splash damage and calls it challenge. There is no mechanics outside of Raids... And the raid bosses have the same weapons... The Templar for example...

      • Your definition of legit is wrong legit means you play by the system and using a gun advantage with a burn isn't cheating or doing it "non-legitimate" it makes it a way to work the system to your advantage in a way that is fair and simple instead of having to run it a long amount of time

        • Agreed. I assumed they made the Hard Crota level 33 because they completed making the raid and said, "Shit, this is too easy! How can we make it feel like a hard raid without spends my any time actually programming my new mechanics?" Figured it wouldn't happen again. That'll teach me...

I agree with u man. I wanna do level 34 but no one will take a 33. Guess I'll wait two weeks. But as u were saying the overwhelming adds get pretty tiresome.

With all the add's that are in the arena during the 34 and 35 PoE boss fights, it takes away from the intended mechanics. I agree with you, add's that can randomly one shot you from across the map out of no where is not challenging, its broken. Dealing with countless amounts of overpowered add's shouldn't be the the most challenging aspect to a boss fight, the boss itself and it's mechanics should be.

            • Honestly haven't even bothered with level 35. Just sounds boring. Only bothered with 34 once. Bullet spongy boss and hordes of enemies isn't challenging. Sure, I died a lot. But it was boring. Needless to say I won't be playing PoE much.

              • I don't understand how killing him isn't "legit?" Does it matter how it's done? The only reason they did solar and arc burn these 2 weeks is so people like you didn't complain about beating it. Imagine when trickle and grounded or angry are the mods.... Then we'll see who the real champs are.

My biggest issue with it is that you're just trying to simulate the "best" strategy (4th horseman, arc sniper) over and over and over and over hoping that you don't get 1-shot in the process. With a game mode like this, every game session should be different: moving, reacting, reviving, etc. The variety has been sucked out of it by the artificial difficulty. Honestly, after a few attempts it's just repetitive and not fun. This fight alone may have burned me out on Destiny for awhile.

                  • It's just a shitty fight. I beat it last week with solar and it wasn't any fun. There isn't anything cool or interesting about the fight or really any of the fights. They just put bullet sponges in and no fun way to kill them.

Qodron is not fun, challenging OR rewarding... It's outright broken, after hours of testing (and I'm talking nearly double figures) Qodrons eyes shows in a place that isn't in the wide open and surrounded by adds 1 out of 6 times, no matter what position you chooses to do the fight from. Now I don't know wether I'm just playing with bad players because when Qodron's eye does be a good little boy and come for me I ALWAYS have him down and I'm ALWAYS ready for my teammates to huddle up so I can set them free. So why haven't I actually beat it yet? -blam!- knows, all I can say it the fight is bullshit (it's actually not, it's clever AND fun) but I'm constantly being taken out by adds from Behind me whilst searching for the eye. There's just to many adds, adding a -blam!- ton of enemies does not make a game challenging, it makes it frustrating!!! -blam!- the 34 this week I'm done wasting hours and hours on it. Before you say get good, I can solo crota, I can run sword/relic with all classes on both levels. EDIT: Because I don't get a Gjallarhorn I'm forced to deal with that bullshit whilst the majority of players just burn the shit out of him in 30 seconds. A slight reduction in adds would make the Qodron fight a really decent fight, and maybe a rotating shield around the boss so that people can't cheese the shit out of him!

                    • We sniped him 60% ran around defusing mines and passing the poison. And the stalled until we got him down in the trenches on the back.. Put up a blinding bubble behind us and then sniped him to death. Only because it was lagging. When we had a good connection we just sniped him to death But we did beat it the first time this week going through the mechanics of passing the poison and defusing mines while enemies spawned.

                    • Well, burning him is the strategy because of the burn. There's not much else you can do. All arc gets 300 percent modifiers, you can talk about legit but you have access to the same fun killer the enemies do, so wreck the boss. Next week, when it's light switch, it won't be about burning him but surviving the onslaught while whittling him down.

Exactly my thoughts They either need to remove the mines, the essence, or the 35 level on the enemies, all combined they seriously just make this fight unplayable, it is not fun and unless you have the correct weapons: impossible.

                            • I would put myself through the horror that is 35 if there was anything worth having. The perks on the new DLC weapons are -blam!-ing useless. I'd rather stick to 34 and level all my old raid weapons since they actually have useful perks. The mechanics in the prison are cool but being 1 shot constantly makes it a complete waste of time.

                            • Oh no i totally agree. I didnt find crota hard mode enjoyable either just a chore to get a few guns and that damn crux for that trash gun they refuse to improve <.< I did Skolas last week cause i knew they messed up with the solar burn and we'd never see it again. I have no reason to even attempt it from here on out. I got enough etheric light to upgrade my few favorites and got to lvl 34 with all 3 week one one. There is no need to run 35. Oh i get an extra etheric light and a judgments chance? to upgrade what? one gun is sold a week and we get 3 weapon cores. Half the PoE armor has been sold and will eventually b sold so on repeat armor weeks you can always roll judgements chance. I dont plan on facing Skolas again until the lvl cap is increased. Until im actually ALLOWED to be on the difficulty lvl. Anyone run through Crota hard at 33? Its a whooole hell of a lot easier and he can be killed in 2 swords with minimal skill involved. Putting enemies at a lvl that the players themselves cant reach is just a cheap tacky way of making things challenging. VoG hard was a challenge for 30. We were allowed to be at that lvl and it was still a challenge

                              • Qodron's boss battle was some of the most fun I've had in PoE, the third time I did it we melted him with Gjallarhorn before he even spawned his first wave of bubbles. It wasn't fun nor rewarding. And I believe the Skolas boss fight is a good example of artificial difficulty. It isn't hard because of clever game mechanics, its hard because the game keeps piling it on during the fight and after a while its not even fun anymore. We're supposed to deal damage to Skolas, all while dismantling mines, playing a game of hot potato AND dodging adds that can one-two shot you?

                                • Yup, too many fights require a massive dps burn or hiding like a bitch. Difficulty is derived from gross damage, not mechanics that need to be overcome or strats that need to be devised.
