Skirmish - How to play it- Beginner´s edtion

Skirmish – How to play it - Beginner´s edition With Trials of Osiris coming up I decided to write a guide, so all the unexperienced players in skirmish can get a rough idea how to play the game mode. Also, every time the skirmish bounty is up I can´t help but notice that a lot of players have no idea how to play skirmish. This guide is supposed to help you. I will post an advanced guide soon. Wonderful meme by Wulf BiAS: http://memegenerator.net/instance/61963409 Technical stuff It´s 3 v 3 with revives enabled. The important part in that sentence is “revives enabled”. Whenever one of your teammates is down it counts down a timer and then you can revive him. Each revive ads 5 seconds to that timer for the revived person. So the first revive is possible after 3 seconds, the second after 8 and so on. Matchmaking is based on whether you are in fireteam or not. Fireteams will usually be matched against other fireteams, randoms usually against randoms. Two man fireteam can be matched against a three man fireteam and be given an additional random. The overall skilllevel in matched fireteams is much higher than in randoms! Keep that in mind and don´t be frustrated when switching from randoms to fireteams. Tactics This is not control. This is skirmish. It is a different game mode. If you play control in skirmish, you will lose. One bad player in a team can easily mean losing the match, no matter how good the other two players are (no pressure :-). The main goal is to survive and built up enough momentum to carry your team to victory. None of the below will require communication. This is an absolute beginner´s guide. The standard tactic is to stick together, no matter what. If your complete team encounters the other team, the odds are balanced. If two players encounter three, the two players might win, but it is unlikely. One vs. three is always an easy kill for the three players. There are a couple things to keep in mind though. 1) Do not stand in each others way. If the player in front needs to take cover, it is very bad if the player behind him blocks the hallway. Keep that in mind and position yourself accordingly. 2) Do not stand to close to one another. One super can take you all out. One stray rocket can take you all out. You want your teammates on the edge of your radar. 3) Know where your teammates are relative to your positon. Are they on the same level? Can they see the opponent coming around the corner the same moment you can? Do you have room to move, maybe escape? It is as important to know where the opposing team is, as it is to know where your team is. 4) Heavy ammo can turn a game around in skirmish. Everybody needs to have it on your team. Wait until the whole team is there, unless you run risk losing it to the other team. As long as you stick together and everybody gets the heavy ammo, you usually have a decent change at wining. If you are a beginner in skirmish, play it like that and the game mode will suddenly be much easier. At the start of the match, do not just sprint of. Turn around, wave at each other and move as team. You will be surprised how much even something as simple as waving at each other in the beginning can build a team. This is not control. This is skirmish. It is a different game mode. If you play control in skirmish, you will lose. Revives are enabled and give points! So in general you should always wait for your teammates to revive you. But there are things to consider when you are shot down or want to revive a teammate. 1) How long does the respawn timer take? A good rule of thumb is: if it is above ten seconds, it is to long. Just respawn. 2) Is it save to be revived? The opposing team can use you as bait and be lying in ambush. If this is the case, respawn. 3) Is it better to revive or to run away? You need to judge whether or not you should revive your teammates and take the risk of being shoot down or just run away and survive. One revive is 50 points which might result in two kills for the opposing team, giving them at least 200 points (2 kills), or even 420 points (2 headshot kills with 4 assists). That is a very bad trade, so run away. Regrouping is crucial. Once your team is wiped do not storm back in! This is not control. This is skirmish. It is a different game mode. If you play control in skirmish, you will lose. Wait for your whole team to respawn, then regroup and proceed with the standard tactic. That´s it for the beginner´s guide! To sum it up: Do not storm of in the beginning, stick together without standing on each others feet and think before reviving/respawning. Always regroup and most of all: Have fun! Skirmish is great and probably the best game mode out there in destiny. I will post an advanced guide once it is done. That one will be much more in depth for advanced tactics in fireteams that know what they are doing. Do you have more suggestions? Write your own comment and tell everybody about it! The goal is to create a guide so that everybody has rough idea how to play skirmish! EDIT: Fixed some mistakes. The original scores for kills were wrong, fixed that as well (Thanks Deldu). Reworded the matchmaking part (Thanks FlamingoSeeker). Added the meme that made my day (Thanks Wulf BiAS). Added skirmish and beginner tag (Does anybody ever use tags on this forum?)

    • The revive is the single most blunder I see happening all the time, you should put that in big bold capital letters. Drives me nuts to have a guy revive me right in front of the sniper that just took me down. I've had games where the guy reviving actually took care of being crouched behind cover as he revived me.. I'm like, this idiot has to be trolling me.

      • Just listen to Lord Shaxx: "stick together team!" This strategy never fails. You can team shoot, revive eachother, and hold map control. Anytime I play a team that splits up loses in Skirmish. 1vs 3 is not going to work to your advantage

          • Alright! Lots of positive and constructive criticism, only little drama. Thanks a lot for that. If fixed some mistakes I made that were pointed out (both on the content and the spelling side of things). It is nice to see that this post is able to help some players, so skirmish can be even better.

Nice post. Just a little rectification, when you are 3 and you kill 2 people you can only have 4 assists and not 6. Your score is also false, if there were 2 headshot kills and 6 assists it will be 220 + 6*50 = 520, but the maximum point you can get from 2 kills by 3 players is 420.

How to play it: How ever you want and not just how others think you should play it.... stick together= die together= other team having time to move to next spawn zone for another round of easy killing. If you are the last alive, do not go for the rambo kill and try and revive your teammates. better to let them respawn and work their way back to you and mop up the enemy from behind instead.

                    • Brilliant post, the only time I don't follow these sort of rules is on my arc blade hunter. There's nothing better than letting your teammates get into a mid range battle going invisible sneaking round the back and getting triple kills shotguning 3 idiots looking the wrong way. I've had teammates rage message me over it though in games where I've got a +3KD I get why there mad but I've usually won the game for them even if I did use them as cannon fodder
