Unappreciated Historical Figures!

Here is the thread dedicated to all those dead people out there who you feel should get more attention than they do/did (family included). Here's how we put them on the spotlight: 1)Name/Picture 2)Date of Birth/Death (if unknown guestimate) 3)Why you feel they should be remembered. 4)FUN FACTS! I'll go first; 1)George Williams 2)October 11, 1821 – November 6, 1905 3)This fine gentleman saw the amount of disgraceful actions that young men were committing during Industrial Era London, so he and a group of 11 friends formed the very first YMCA in 1844. Ever since the YMCA (or as it is now known as "the Y") has been a hallmark for community service and reaching out to those in need. NO ITS NOT JUST A GYM. 4)He was actually a very rude mofo in his youth, then later became a devout Christian. Edit: I'm trying to bring attention to those fine gentlemen or woman who are very obscure in the history books. No points are deducted of course for bringing up a past president, but try to show us the people who did something cool, yet are neglected by major curriculums

Claire Cameron Patterson. He discovered the age of the earth by developing the uranium-lead dating method into lead-lead dating, and by using leadisotopic data from the Canyon Diablo meteorite, he calculated an age for the Earthof 4.55 billion years; a figure far more accurate than those that existed at the time and one that has remained largely unchanged since 1956. He also was the biggest proponent for the dangers of lead, and how their presence in fuels was damaging the earth, and people.

Erwin Rommel and simo häyhä/the white death Both are badass and I think lesser known. Rommel was a Nаzi general that had awesome tank tactics, and simo was a finnish sniper that took on WWII Russia and lived.

        1. Marshal Georgy Zhukov 2. December 1st, 1896 - June 18th 1974 3. Without this man it is likely that Russia would have been defeated by the Germans in WW2 he is responsible for turning the battle of Stalingrad around and creating the tipping point in which the Germans were now on the defensive. 4. He surprised the Germans in Stalingrad by using storm cover, during a blizzard the red army units under his command snuck up on the unsuspecting german's and attacked them allowing an encirclement to occur. This encirclement would eventually cost Germany the battle.

Nikola Tesla. (1856-1943) Truly a "mad scientist." Much of his work had been stolen from him since he hadn't been able to afford patents, so he was said to be able to memorize quadratic and 3 dimensional functions and kept most of his ideas locked in his head. Lost funding when he was working on a project that would be able to wirelessly transmit energy over a distance. Invented the tesla coil, and helped design the system for AC electrical energy supply. Among many things, he is often overshadowed in history by Thomas Edison, which is just a shame really. There are many secrets about Tesla's life and thought process that are still not understood today. And another fun fact, he also worked on inventing a Death Ray.

            • Joseph Lister, 1st Baron Lister, Bt., OM, FRS, PC (5 April 1827 – 10 February 1912), known as Sir Joseph Lister, Bt., between 1883 and 1897, was a British surgeon and a pioneer of antiseptic surgery. By applying Louis Pasteur's advances in microbiology, he promoted the idea of sterile portable ports while working at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Lister successfully introduced carbolic acid (now known as phenol) to sterilise surgical instruments and to clean wounds, which led to a reduction in post-operative infections and made surgery safer for patients. His work led Joseph Sawyer to develop Listerine and made halitosis a problem.

                  • I know a guy called George Williams. Most rude, condescending and fat guy you will ever meet. Anyway I'd have to choose Hitler. He fixed the German economy.
